Muse Food – Bees

Albert Einstein once said, “If the bee disappears from the surface of the Earth, man would have no more than four years left to live.”

I think it is amazing that our survival is dependent on the tiniest of creatures.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby captured this photo of a honey bee on a black-eyed susan while we were in Nova Scotia (a couple weeks before the hurricane).

Watching the bees in my corner of the world gives me hope for the world. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I do all we can to ensure our neighborhood is bee-friendly.

These bumblebees were also spotted in Nova Scotia. There were so many of them there were multiple flowers with two and sometimes three bumblebees in them. That made me so very happy. (smiles)

Bees also inspire me creatively. I love the idea of the tiniest character in a story saving the universe. (grins)

Start Of Fall/Autumn

I know yesterday was officially the first day of Fall/Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere but I have been thinking Autumn thoughts since September 1st. (grins)

It is time to wind down the garden for 2022 but also prepare it for Spring 2023.

I read a recent study that revealed bumblebees, due to climate change, were emerging from their homes before the flowers they normally live off presented themselves. This is causing them great strife.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are planting crocus, hoping the Mafia Squirrels don’t eat those bulbs (We bought the squirrel resistant kind but that only slows the furry little menaces. They don’t stop them.). Crocus, in my area of the world, often bloom before the snow melt and the bumblebees LOVE them.

To prepare for Autumn, I’m also breaking out the sweaters so we’re ready for the cooler weather. (smiles) And we’re stocking up on apple cider.

What You Are Doing Matters

There is a mission in our neighborhood to save the bumblebees.

We don’t rake all the leaves in the fall, leaving some for the bumblebees to burrow under. We don’t use pesticides in our yards (the city has a no pesticide rule). We allow the dandelions, the first flowers of the season, to bloom. We wait to cut our lawns.

The first year, there didn’t seem to be much change in the bumblebee population. We were a bit discouraged.

Ten years later, WOW, we have so many bumblebees. They happily buzz around our yards.

Right now, it might seem like your efforts on a certain project are wasted.

They’re not wasted. Your efforts matter.

They merely need time to blossom!
