Remembrance Day 2024

By Cynthia Sax on November 11, 2024

Here in Canada, every year, at the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we commemorate the sacrifice of all those who serve and have served, past or present, on or off the battlefield, with a moment of silence.

This year, with the rise of Fascism here and around the world, Remembrance Day is especially poignant for me.

Today, I’m thinking of my Great Uncle Frank (you can read some of his story here – https://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ) and the horrors he endured while fighting Fascism and keeping us all safe and free. His experiences changed my big quiet Great Uncle forever. His time during the war haunted him to the day he died.

The best way we can honor his sacrifice and those of so many others is to never allow Fascism to take hold again. People (and dogs and horses and…) have died for our freedom. Protect it.

Lest We Forget.

Remembrance Day 2023

By Cynthia Sax on November 11, 2023

It is Remembrance Day in Canada (the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). We commemorate all those who served, who have protected us on and off the battlefield.

I’m thinking, as always, about my Great Uncle Frank on this day (You can read his story here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ). His experiences at war changed him forever. And his remembrance of those battles changed me forever also.

I’m also thinking of all the other warriors I’ve met over my lifetime.

Their service and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Remembrance Day 2022

By Cynthia Sax on November 11, 2022

Today is Remembrance Day here in Canada. We commemorate all those who served, who have protected us on and off the battlefield.

I always think of my Great Uncle Frank on Remembrance Day. His wartime experiences changed him forever. (You can read his story here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ) He sacrificed so much to keep us safe.

I also think of him when I write. And I think of the other warriors I’ve met. They were willing to trade their lives to protect us.

That’s my definition of a hero.

Their service and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Remembrance Day 2021

By Cynthia Sax on November 11, 2021

Today is Remembrance Day in my corner of the universe.

I always think of my Great Uncle Frank on Remembrance Day. He was my first exposure to the sacrifices of soldiers and to the horrors of war. (You can read about my Great Uncle Frank here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ) His experiences made a lasting impact on me.

And it has influenced my writing and how I write about warriors. (You can read more about that here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2020/11/11/the-darkness-of-war/ ) I think of Great Uncle Frank and the other warriors I’ve met when I write many of my stories.

As I am thinking about them today.

Their service and their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Releasing Rage And Warrior Heroes

By Cynthia Sax on November 8, 2015

What do you love about warrior/soldier heroes?

I’m talking about warrior/soldier heroes at Elizabeth Munro’s online home today (a timely post as Remembrance Day/Veteran’s Day is on Wednesday).

http://authorelizabethmunro.blogspot.ca/2015/11/shiny-warrior-heroes-with-cynthia-sax.html

Here’s a snippet…

First and foremost, there’s something extremely sexy about a male who feels so passionately about a cause or person or planet that he is willing to die for it. Rage risks his life to fulfill his missions. Can you imagine what he’d be willing to do for the woman he loves?

Vapor is the most advanced cyborg the Humanoid Alliance has ever developed. He’s a finely honed weapon, a warrior without parallel, half man and half machine. No lock can contain him. No being can stop him. Whatever he wants, he takes.

He wants Mira Breazeal, the Designer’s daughter.

She’s his one temptation, his sexy target. Vapor shouldn’t crave her caresses, steal her kisses, make her scream with ecstasy. The cyborgs want her dead and they would question his loyalty if he didn’t kill her. The humans would shoot him on sight if he dared to touch her.

Their love is forbidden. Their desire could be lethal. One human and one cyborg will risk everything for a moment of passion.

Lest We Forget

Field Of Poppies Pompeii Italy

Field Of Poppies, Pompeii, Italy

If you have loved ones serving right now or you’re very sensitive, please do not read this post. This makes me cry so…

My first experience with the horrors of war was as a young girl. My Great Uncle Frank served in the war. He never talked about that time. Ever. Whenever someone mentioned the battles, this peaceful, hard working farmer would always change the subject. We knew it was a traumatic time for him but we didn’t know how life-changing it was until he got older.

My Great Uncle Frank was diagnosed with Dementia. He relived a certain time of his life over and over. Unfortunately, this time was during the war. He was in the trenches, fighting the enemy.

I will never forget visiting him as a young girl. He was in the front yard, rolling and ducking and using everything he could get his hands on as a weapon (my Great Aunt had locked up the guns and knives).

This was my big, strong Great Uncle, a man as dependable and sturdy as the maple tree in his yard yet I have never seen someone look so terrified, so emotionally intense, so frantic. I saw in his face when buddies died, when he killed another being, when he thought he wouldn’t make it home alive. The experience shook me to the core.

He was that scared yet he went overseas and fought to protect us, to protect our beliefs, our culture, our future. That’s my definition of a hero and these are the heroes we honor today.
