Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – February 5th
How are you doing this fine first week in February?
Raw Desires has been finalized and loaded to all booksellers. It is ready to release on the 21st.
I continue to craft the first messy draft of Strive For Forever. This fourth core story in the Cyborg Unity series is action-packed also. (grins) That is one of the defining characteristics thus far of the series – it has SO much action.
I love Strive. I love Euryale. They are great together.

Raw Desires And The Words We Speak Vs The Words We Know
Raw, the hero of Raw Desires (releasing on February 21st), feels comfortable speaking 5,082 words in the universal language.
This might seem low.
And it IS low. Raw is, admittedly, not skilled in communications. (grins)
But it isn’t as low as we might believe it is.
The average human male speaks 7,000 words a day.
Total.
Many of those words are repeated. Think of how many times we say ‘the’ or ‘a’ in a day.
Sure, the average person knows about 20,000 to 30,000 words in their birth language. Raw, in comparison, has millions of words in his databases.
But we tend to use the same words over and over.
For example, the first chapter of Raw Desires is 3,144 words long but it is crafty using only 1,030 unique words. I used ‘the’ 211 times and ‘her’ 128 times.
So having 5,082 words in regular rotation isn’t horrifying low.

Containers For Composting
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have always composted. There is something wonderful about returning fruits, veggies, leaves and other plant materials to the earth. Composting also produces free high quality dirt and that’s the best price going. (grins)
When our city started their mass composting program, collecting our compostable stuff at the curb, I got a bit lazy about our own backyard composting. But now that we have the vegetable garden, I’ve gotten serious about it again.
When we first started composting, before the city collection program, the city supplied wonderful backyard composting bins to residents. Silly me. I only took one of them. We’re still using that compost bin today.
But we’ll soon need at least one, maybe two additional composting bins. We’ll likely go the cheapie garbage bin route. We’ll drill holes in the bottom and sides of a big garbage bin and voila, along with a well-sealing lid (to keep the critters and rain out), we’ll have a new composting bin.
It is THAT easy to create a composting bin. Some balcony gardeners create them using small pails.

Raw Desires And Talking With The Dead
In the first few scenes of Raw Desires, Taytu, the heroine, talks to her long deceased Mom.
Her Mom doesn’t talk back. She has been dead for solar cycles (years).
But Taytu knows her Mom so well she knows what her beloved departed parent would say. And talking to her gives Taytu comfort.
I also often ‘talk’ with my loved ones who have passed. I usually do this via thoughts, not spoken words.
‘Speaking’ with the dead gives me comfort. It ensures they remain part of my life and always reside in my heart. And I usually know what their replies would be also…because I know them.
Hey, this works for me. (grins) We do what we have to do to ease our sorrow and bring us happiness. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

The Dear Wonderful Hubby, when he returned from one of his many business trips, showed me this photo of cooking utensils.

Raw Desires – Second Scene Of The First Chapter

She turned and carefully navigated the spaces between the burial plots. Some of the mounds were heart-twistingly small. Her cousin’s daughter, Fana, had been born while Taytu was at the academy. She’d only seen the baby in images.
And she’d seen the infant in death. Taytu’s eyes stung. Fana had been clasped in her mother’s arms. One projectile had downed both of them.
Their enemy had no compassion, none at all. Her anger at the cyborgs flared once more, incinerating her grief, her sorrow, her guilt. She reveled in the hate. When she engaged her fury, she was spared the other, more difficult feelings.
It had kept her sane during the solar cycles of solitude, while she buried the dead and plotted the demise of those who had wronged her loved ones.
She continued to walk.
The land she trekked over was lifeless. No creatures scurried. No vegetation grew. There was no laughter of children or chirping of insects. Even the brook by the large rock was dry and silent.
The planet was alien to her. It bore little resemblance to her childhood home.
The Humanoid Alliance had destroyed everything.
Her shoulders rounded as she trudged into the small structure she’d constructed. To live in one of the dead’s homes felt…wrong. Her temporary living space was simple and shoddily put together, but it kept the rain off her face while she slept, and it ensured her few belongings remained dry.
Taytu extracted a nourishment bar from a storage container and took a swig of water from another container. While she ate and drank, she scrolled through the messages displayed on her handheld. Gezi and Kometa, two of her best friends from the academy, had both sent her multiple communications.
She sighed and plunked her ass on the fabric-covered vegetation she’d been using as a sleeping support. In twenty-one planet rotations, it would be exactly five solar cycles since she left the academy. She’d stopped talking to her friends that planet rotation.
Yet they continued to reach out to her. They didn’t know the being they’d known was gone forever, that her world now consisted of death and justice for the dead.
She didn’t respond to their messages, because she hadn’t anything to say to them. Goodbyes had been exchanged. She wouldn’t live through the implementation of her plans.
It was kinder to say nothing. She put the handheld aside.
Dirt covered her fingers and her flight suit. Even her short-cropped hair felt grimy.
Digging the grave for the boy had been messy work.
But he deserved that labor, that act of remembrance. They all did.
Seeking comfort and connection, Taytu skimmed her fingertips over the decoration on her wrist. It consisted of small polished stones held together by finely braided vegetation.
The heirloom piece had been handed down from generation to generation, had been restrung many times.
Her mom had been wearing it when she died.
Taytu often felt her mom’s presence in the stones. Her fingers stopped on a small rectangular one. It sported grooves.
That signified knowledge.
“I hear you. I hear you.” Her mom’s message was clear. Building her skillset should be her focus.
She swallowed the last bit of the nourishment bar, gulped some water, and rose to her booted feet.
There was no one around to view her filth. She could tidy herself later.
There was training to complete now.
This planet rotation’s session required weapons. She strapped three daggers and a modified gun to her form and marched out of the structure.
A mock cyborg was situated steps away from the door. It was constructed from branches, vegetation, and fabric.
She’d also located a set of body armor in the warship the Humanoid Alliance had crashed—the ship with two cyborgs trapped inside. The faux cyborg wore that protective garment.
Breaching that shield was one of her challenges. She drew the gun she’d altered, aimed, and fired.
The projectile struck her target. It shaved off some of the body armor, but it didn’t pierce that protective garment.
“What the fuck?” That wasn’t the result she expected.
She turned the gun to study it.
The weapon resembled the image of the other gun in the database. The modifications should work. The expert had boasted about downing cyborgs using it. He’d shown a set of body armor he’d blasted apart.
Taytu aimed at her target again and pressed the trigger.
The result was the same. The projectile merely grazed the protective garment.
“That expert was full of bovine shit.” She shook her head. “Maybe I need better projectiles.” She would research the possibilities and add a container of projectiles to her next order of supplies. “My daggers won’t penetrate the body armor either.”
The blades were solely for close-range defensive maneuvers, and even their effectiveness in those situations were in doubt. Cyborgs, according to her research, moved quicker than human eyesight could track. She’d likely be dead before she extracted her daggers from their sheaths.
“I’m back to relying on the explosives.” She’d mastered the ability to craft bombs. Those should blow up anything, including cyborgs and their irritating body armor. “I don’t like that. If the explosives fail—”
An artificial droning filled the air.

Thinning The Radishes And Other Gardening Experiments
Writing SciFi Romance wasn’t a random choice for me. (grins) I love science, especially conducting experiments.
That extends to my gardening. I am constantly experimenting and testing things.
I continue to grow veggies in the basement grow station the Dear Wonderful Hubby set up for me.
I was told that thinning radishes would result in larger radishes faster.
So I tried that and I found NO difference, except now I have fewer radishes to harvest. The radishes took the same time to grow and were roughly the same size.
I have also been trying to grow onions from onion bottoms. I cut the bottoms or root ends off the store bought onions, put them in water for a while until they grew longer roots and then stuck them in some dirt.
The onion tops (the green part) grew vigorously. I have yet to see any sort of bulb form.
I still have hope, however, and will be continuing to grow them.

Raw Desires And Timeframes
Raw Desires, the third core story in the Cyborg Unity series, is situated after Grin And Bare Him in the release schedule but actually starts before the action in Seizing Power begins.
Taytu, the heroine, is one of the genetic matches who reaches out to the cyborgs on the Homeland during the confrontation between Cadet (Eirene Ours) and Power. This is done off page in Seizing Power. We don’t hear her recording during that story but I thought it was important to include it in Raw Desires.
And I also thought it was important to show Cadet rescuing Taytu…because…well…it is. (grins) I can’t say more about that scene without it being a spoiler.
This sounds a bit confusing but all it means is…
the action in Raw Desires doesn’t start directly after Grin And Bare Him.
It starts between B Free and Seizing Power.
We’re jumping back in time a bit so we can see all those awesome first interactions between Raw and Taytu.
I don’t want you to miss anything!

Raw, a K model cyborg, is one of the lucky warriors to have located his genetic match. He hears his human female’s voice over the communication lines and immediately processes she is his.
Winning her affections will be a greater challenge. Battle has always been Raw’s focus. The rough and tough warrior has no idea how to engage anyone’s tender emotions.
Fortunately, he isn’t alone in the universe. His unmatched male friends help him craft a plan.
All Raw has to do is relay a few unsettlingly sweet words to his female and give her the thoroughly unfunctional wall decoration he has obtained. He projects she will then jump into his big, strong arms and beg him to claim her.
Taytu isn’t jumping anywhere. She has one mission—kill every cyborg in existence.
The huge, handsome male traveling to meet with her is her first target. His rough hands, firm lips and sparkling, energy-infused eyes won’t save him from her vengeance. She has trained vigorously for this moment and she won’t fail at her assigned task.
The cyborg will die.

House Of The Dragon And Time Jumps
Spoiler Alert – This post will talk about House Of The Dragon and will contain spoilers. If you haven’t watched this show up to and including Episode 6, you might want to skip this.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are watching House Of The Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel.
It takes me about 3 episodes to get into a show. By episode 6 of House Of The Dragon, I still wasn’t captured but the Dear Wonderful Hubby was.
We decided to finish the season.
Then…episode 6 happened.
Episode 6 involves a 10 year time jump. Time jumps are jarring for both viewers and readers. We, writers, risk losing readers whenever we do time jumps.
But this time jump was even more jarring because they had recast many of the lead actors.
They not only recast them but they changed their personalities. Many of the characters became harsher. Their innocence and their hope were obliterated.
As the Dear Wonderful Hubby pointed out, it was like watching a brand new show.
We’re debating whether or not to watch this brand new show. Do we care enough to figure out who everyone is, what they want, what their plans and hopes and dreams are?
We haven’t yet made this decision.
THIS is the danger of shifts in time.
