Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – July 25th
Woot! I finished the first draft of B Free, the fourth core story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in November)! (I’m also a third done the second draft.) This story was a battle but wow, there are some exciting reveals in it. (grins) I think you’ll enjoy it.
I plan to complete the second and third drafts this week and send it to my awesome editor by end of day Saturday at the latest.

Baring Grudge And Weapons Of Choice
Cyborgs were manufactured for battle. Ending lifespans pleases their design. They’re happy when fighting. They host mock battles for fun.
All warriors have their favorite weapons. I believe their preferences around these tools of death relays a lot about their personalities.
Grudge, the hero of Baring Grudge, for example, loves blowing things up. He likes the big booms, the excitement of detonations. If he has a choice, he will use explosives to deal damage to structures, terrain, beings.
Rancor, his best friend, in contrast, loves to fight with daggers. He believes that weapon requires greater skill and prolongs battles and his joy. Rancor often pushes himself to be the best and that is reflected in his weapon of choice.

Baring Grudge And Going Transmission-Free
One of the challenges Cadet, the leader of the Rebel Cyborgs, faces is communications. She knows warriors loyal to the Cyborg Council and perhaps Power, her nemesis, himself are monitoring cyborg transmission lines.
That means if she wants her presence, her warriors’ presences, and their plans to remain secret, they can’t transmit. Anything.
Every communication is a risk. Other cyborgs can intercept it and attempt to track their locations.
This creates issues. Cadet, for example, can’t simply communicate with the warriors on Mercury Minor, asking them to send pilots to transport the warships. Someone has to fly to the planet and talk to them.
It also means when warriors are on solo missions, like when they chase an explosion-loving thief across the universe, they are truly on their own. They can’t communicate with Cadet or others.
Unless it is an emergency.

Baring Grudge And Mushrooms
It has been so damp in my corner of the universe; our front lawn is sprouting mushrooms (our city has banned pesticides in a successful effort to save the bees so the lawn is a mixture of grass, dandelions and that super aggressive vine that is taking over the entire yard – big sigh).
I LOVE mushrooms. I find them fascinating. Their shapes are alien-like. The feel of them is as unique. Some of them can be safely eaten. Some of them make us as high as the International Space Station. Some of them can kill us.
The ones in our front yard are the expected mushroom shape and they remind me of little explosions. Grudge, the hero of Baring Grudge, enjoys blowing things up. I think he would be intrigued by these mushrooms (and likely get a kick out of exploding these little explosion-appearing fungi).

Cyborgs And Mysterious Insects
When I was a kid, I was fascinated with insects. I would watch ants gather food, chase butterflies, move worms from drying sidewalks back to the safer-for-them grass. Much to my Awesome Mom’s dismay, I would also fill coffee tins with ants and beetles and store them under my bed. Yes, I was THAT kid. (grins)
I’m still fascinated with insects today. Our corner of the universe has been heating up recently and that means insects are migrating from the more southern regions. These are new-to-me insects and I’ve been enjoying looking at them and identifying them (photo recognition makes this SO much easier).
Insects exist in the cyborg world also. When we meet Rage in Releasing Rage, he and the other cyborgs are fighting the Mantidae, giant migrating praying mantis-resembling insects. There are insects on almost every planet the cyborgs explore, including Carine E, the home of Kralj from Dark Thoughts.
Insects are a part of our universe. I expect we’ll find alien insects on other planets. I’ll enjoy looking at those also, adding them to my mental collection.

Baring Grudge – Second Scene Of The First Chapter

This week I’m sharing the second scene of that first chapter.

Rancor expelled his breath, lowering his shoulders. “She didn’t stop the jettisoning of the robots.” He grinned. “We have the best of leaders.”
“We do.” Grudge nodded and pounded the robot, sending the artificial being to its doom.
He had been a fraction of a warrior when Cadet found him in the used-goods market, displayed amidst the scrap metal and the cracked viewscreens. The merchant had sold him to her, his seventh owner, for an embarrassingly low price.
She had freed him, had sourced his missing parts, had given him a role, a place on her team.
He gave her his loyalty in return, would kill for her, die for her.
Every warrior in the space station would do that.
“We have until the end of the shift to eject as many robots as we can.” Grudge sensed their opportunity for fun would be greatly limited once they gathered in the docking bay. “I’ll convey them here.” Being a C Model, he was larger and stronger than Rancor—a more recently manufactured D Model. He could carry more robots. “You dispose of them. The faster we work, the more targets we’ll have to shoot.”
Grudge strode toward the remaining robots. Purpose filled him.
If his projections were correct—and they were always correct—working at cyborg speed, they could jettison three thousand and twenty-two robots.
That should provide them with sufficient entertainment.

Grudge and Rancor labored until the last possible moment.
“You won’t make it in time, D Model.” Grudge ran as fast as he could through the hallways. “You’re too slow.”
“Frag you.” His friend was a breath behind him. “I’m only slower than you on the ground. In the air, I can’t be matched.”
“We aren’t in the air right now, are we?” Grudge laughed as he ran into the docking bay.
Heads turned.
Cadet scowled at him.
He swallowed his mirth and skidded to a stop near Strain and his female. His boot heels left grooves in the floor tiles.
Rancor slid into place beside him. The D Model huffed and puffed.
Strain glowered at them and lifted his fragile human female higher against his chest, rumbling with unhappiness. The warrior was damaged, had viewed beings as threats before finding his female. He was more wary now that he had located her.
Any warrior would be cautious. Compatible females were rare. A cyborg only had one genetic match, and many of them would never meet that revered being.
Grudge projected he wouldn’t be worthy of that honor. He wiggled his toes inside his left boot. But if a miracle occurred and he did meet her, he wouldn’t let any other being venture near her.
He would safeguard her with everything he had.
“Now that we’re all here.” Cadet frowned at them. “We can begin.”
Everyone else in the docking bay, including Grudge, became silent and still, giving their leader their full attention.
“Look around us.” She extended her arms. “We’re surrounded by ships. Many of them are Class A Warships, the best that have ever been manufactured. As of this planet rotation, these vessels belong to us. We’re claiming them on behalf of cyborgs everywhere, both our freed and yet-to-be freed brethren.”
Grudge and the other warriors cheered. Pride expanded his chest. They were no longer at the mercy of the Humanoid Alliance—their brutal manufacturers. They were a military force.
“We’re claiming the ships whether a certain arrogant ass wants them or not.” Their leader muttered that aside.
“She’s talking about Power again.” Strain’s female made that not-so-quiet observation.
Grudge quashed his inappropriate laugh.
There was a 98.1259 percent probability the chatty human female, as Cadet referred to the D Model’s genetic match, was correct. Their leader was talking about Power, the head of the cyborg council and her most hated nemesis.
But Cadet didn’t appreciate any comments made about the male.
She glared at Strain’s female before shifting her gaze to the other warriors.
“We have more ships than warriors.” Her lips lifted slightly. “That’s a good problem to have, but it is still a problem.”
“Not if we fly them at full speed.” Rancor said that under his breath and nudged Grudge.
Grudge grinned at him.
“One of us will stay here and guard the space station.” Cadet shared the plan with them. “The rest of us will fly the first set of ships, loaded with as many weapons as they can bear, to Mercury Minor. We will retrieve more warriors and return here to claim the rest of the vessels.”

Baring Grudge And Freighters
There are quite a few freighters being used in the Rebel Cyborg series. Freighters are the transport trucks of spaceships. They are used to transport goods across the universe.
Every space station, planet, settlement is accustomed to freighters landing and taking off. They don’t raise any red flags and normally aren’t ships anyone would use in an attack.
That makes them perfect ships for the cyborg retrieval teams. The warriors can land the freighters without much notice on Humanoid Alliance controlled planets, allowing them to free their brethren with decreased risk of the enemy sounding the alarm.
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, uses a freighter to escape Humanoid Alliance notice also. The cargo space is needed to transport her ill-gotten gains.
And most freighters are designed to be flown by one being. Taelyn is accustomed to working alone.
That changes when she meets Grudge.

Baring Grudge, Humanoid Alliance Space Stations And Death Stars
The first scene of Baring Grudge is set on the moon-shaped Humanoid Alliance space station the cyborgs commandeered at the end of Under Stain.
When I think of the space station, I think of the Death Star from the Star Wars world.
They are both spheres, have ships and weapons stored within them, serve as control centers, can be mobile (though they move very slowly). Armies can occupy the structures.
The interiors are also fairly similar. There are mazes of hallways and chambers within the Humanoid Alliance’s space station and the Death Star.
There ARE differences between the two.
While the Humanoid Alliance’s space station has exterior weapons, they are used primarily for defense. The Death Star has an awesome planet-destroying super laser.
The Humanoid Alliance’s space station is disguised as a moon. The (completed) Death Star isn’t being hidden from anyone. (grins)
For the health of the universe and the safety of the beings living in it, however, the Humanoid Alliance’s space station and the Death must share the same fate.
They both have to be destroyed.

Baring Grudge And Friendships
Baring Grudge is a romance first and foremost. The focus is on Grudge’s relationship with Taelyn.
But it is also a story about family and friendship.
Grudge’s best friend is Rancor, the pilot on Cadet’s Cyborg Retrieval Team. These two warriors cause absolute chaos together. (grins) Grudge, having had his actions restricted in the past, is always up for anything. Rancor often supplies the (bad) ideas behind that anything. They are menaces to the universe and I had so much fun recording their antics. They almost stole the story.
I also gained more respect for Cadet. She has her big C Model hands full with handling those two cyborgs. (laughs) She loves them though. So very much. She would give her lifespan for theirs.
