Gardening – 3 Weeks Until Transplanting Outside
The tomato, marigold and pepper plants are growing happily in the basement grow station.
I grew extra plants because…squirrels. (shakes head and grins) They love to dig up newly transplanted plants. For no real reason except it entertains them. I have spare plants in case I lose a few.
Transplanting won’t happen for another 3 weeks. That is the expected last frost date in our corner of the universe.
I’ve also started beans and squash and am waiting for them to germinate.
The grow station is packed. I find that super exciting. (beams)

The Garden Is Winding Down
My part of the world has been experiencing significant below seasonal temperatures.
The plants in the garden plus the trees, the insects, the birds and other life, believe it is November or late Autumn/Fall. They are slowing down or, in the case of the watermelon, stopping growth. Leaves are turning yellow or orange or red. They’re ready for a break.
We have enough tomatoes on the vines to supply us for the year. Once they turn red, we’ll cut them up and freeze them.
We only got 2 bell peppers from our gazillion plants this year. But that’s okay. We’ll buy a box from a local farmer, cut those bell peppers up and freeze them also.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby’s dream of his own watermelon patch will have to wait to come true next year. (smiles) That will give us a challenge in 2024.

Bringing Seedlings Outside
I’m looking at the weather forecasts for the next two weeks and I see NO frost. Yay!
The plants are going outside.
The marigolds will be the first seedlings transplanted. I use them as a border around the vegetable garden. I’m told they ward off the bad bugs like slugs and snails (we have SO many snails – I love them but not in the garden).
I will also be sowing zinnia seeds. I sowed some last month but then we got cold temperatures and none of them sprouted. I’ll try again this week. (I harvested the zinnia seeds from last year’s blooms and have a gazillion of them. So losing a few wasn’t THAT painful.)
The tomatoes and the bell peppers will be likely go out en masse next week.

Preparing For First Frost
First frost in my corner of the universe is within the first two weeks in October. When that occurs, my tomato plants and my bell pepper plants will die and all the fruit remaining on those plants will spoil.
I don’t know when first frost will truly be. Weather predictions have been wrong in the past.
So I’m picking quite a few of the larger tomatoes while they are green and bringing them inside the house. I place them in shallow cardboard boxes (thank you, chocolate and book deliveries- grins) and will monitor them, waiting for them to ripen.
It takes almost a month for a completely green tomato to ripen inside our house. That means we’ll have fresh tomatoes during the entire month of October, which is AWESOME.
I’m also picking the bell peppers. They remain green and they would be considered a small green pepper in the grocery store but hey, they taste great!
(Next year, I’ll start the bell peppers earlier. I added them to the gardening mix at the last minute this year.)
I’m super happy with the veggie garden this year. I’ll definitely have one again next year.
