Adding A Perennial To The Flowerbed
We added a new perennial flower to one of the flowerbeds! Woot!
We already have roses, irises, daffodils and blue snowdrops. Those are all perennials the squirrels leave alone. We had crocus this spring. They were supposed to be squirrel-resistant but some creatures ate all the tops off them so I question that.
This year, we’re adding Cats Pajamas Catmint.
Here is a stock photo of it.
It is supposedly critter resistant and drought resistant and it should be so very pretty.

Gardening – Good Soil Rarely Just Happens
I was chatting with a neighbor and he was talking about how terrible his soil is and how he wishes he had good soil like we do.
He COULD easily have good soil like we do. He could have BETTER soil. He has more trees and that gives him more leaves to mulch with.
But he doesn’t use those leaves. He doesn’t spread them over the garden as mulch. Or create leaf mold with them. He bags the leaves and the city picks them up for THEIR composting program.
He doesn’t compost. And he doesn’t buy compost. None of that good stuff is sprinkled over his yard.
He certainly doesn’t get bags of used coffee grounds from the coffee shops and sprinkle THAT over his year.
He also bags his grass after he has cut it. He doesn’t leave it on the ground as free fertilizer.
His yard is extremely neat. But his soil sucks. And this is starting to impact his grass and other plants. They are being starved of nutrients and stressed. His soil also doesn’t hold much moisture. When the heat of the summer comes, the plants will likely die.
Good soil doesn’t take much work. It certainly takes less work than what he’s doing to keep his yard his version of tidy. But it doesn’t merely happen.

Almost Ready To Move The Gardening Outdoors
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are watching the 14 day weather forecast. We’re looking for any risk of frost.
If we get the all clear by tomorrow, we will likely start moving the tomatoes, beans, peppers, squash and other seedlings outside.
Our last expected frost date is May 10th. We’re early. But that is to be expected with the climate changing.

Gardening With The Mafia Squirrels
The mafia squirrels are out of control this year with the digging. They are not only digging up every inch of the garden beds but they are also digging in the lawn and other places.
They seem to be in a frantic need to store food. That’s a tad bit concerning. It feels like one of those signs in the movies warning us there will be an upcoming natural disaster or alien invasion.
It is also bringing the challenge level of gardening up a few levels. We’ve resorted to covering areas with sown seeds with chicken wire. And we erect stick fences around newly transplanted plants.
It looks absolutely awful.
But hot sauce and cinnamon and other ‘easier’, less visible precautions don’t work with the mafia squirrels. They are city squirrels and they like it spicy. (grins)

Gardening – 3 Weeks Until Transplanting Outside
The tomato, marigold and pepper plants are growing happily in the basement grow station.
I grew extra plants because…squirrels. (shakes head and grins) They love to dig up newly transplanted plants. For no real reason except it entertains them. I have spare plants in case I lose a few.
Transplanting won’t happen for another 3 weeks. That is the expected last frost date in our corner of the universe.
I’ve also started beans and squash and am waiting for them to germinate.
The grow station is packed. I find that super exciting. (beams)

Investing In Asparagus
I LOVE asparagus. I grill it with some minced garlic, parmesan cheese and olive oil, then squeeze a little lemon juice on the spears before serving and it is oh so good!
Asparagus is a perennial. One of my gardening buddies and her family have been harvesting the same asparagus plants for over 25 years.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have decided to invest in asparagus plants this year. We will dedicate a permanent place in the garden for it. And we hope to be harvesting it 25 years from now! (grins)

Starting Seeds
Gardening season at the Sax household has officially begun! Woot!
I’ve sowed tomato, marigold and pea plant seeds in the basement grow station. Peas, radishes, and spinach have been sowed directly in the garden as they are all cool weather plants.
My focus this year, vegetable-wise, will be tomatoes, beans, butternut squash and zucchini (courgettes). I think of these as our survival crops. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I could likely live on them if that was necessary (we hope it is never necessary), especially as squash and bean leaves are edible (when prepared correctly).

Gardening – Improve The Soil
I think improving the soil and making a growable medium (soil or something similar) is something we should ALL be doing. It is a skill we should ALL have.
And it is something that doesn’t require a lot of our time and can cost us absolutely no money.
If you have land and you’ve never improved the soil on that land, it is likely sh*t, especially if you are in an urban area. Most yards in cities are filled with…well…fill. There’s a reason it is called that and not soil. And that reason is because it’s awful to grow in.
But that’s super easy to change!
Sprinkle some used coffee grounds (you can get a big bag of them for free from Starbucks or most other coffee shops) over your yard a couple times a year.
Or make compost (put your kitchen vegetable and fruit scraps and some shredded paper into a closed bucket with holes in it and wait for it to turn into a soil-like substance) and spread that.
Or make leaf mold (place leaves plus some water in a closed bucket with holes in it and wait for that to turn into a soil-like substance) and spread that.
If you live in an apartment building and have a balcony, you can make compost with your kitchen vegetable and fruit scraps and some shredded paper in a closed container with holes on it and place it in a corner of your balcony. In about a year, you’ll have compost, a soil-like substance you can grow plants in.
Some of my buddies sell their balcony-made compost to other people in their apartment buildings. They also keep some for themselves for the future, in case they need to grow some vegetables quickly.
Because that’s the key point. We don’t have to do all the work of planting gardens, etc., right now, but, if we improve our soil, when we DO want to do that, the soil/compost will be ready.

Getting Ready To Start The Tomatoes
I am forcing myself to wait until April 1st to plant tomato seeds in the basement grow station. (grins)
It’s dang challenging. I wanted to start them January 1st.
But transplanting huge plants is high risk. The larger the plants are the more they tend to suffer from transplant shock and die.
So I wait. Impatiently.
I plan to plant about 22 mini tomato plants and 22 larger messed up heirloom plants this year. That’s how many spaces and bamboo stakes I have for tomatoes.
Ohhh… I’m getting so excited!

She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.
Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.
