Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 19th
I completed the second and third drafts of Needing Valor, this year’s free thank you short story (releasing in December)! Woot!
I’m sitting on the story until the end of the month. I want to put a little space between finishing this last draft and sending it to my Awesome Editor, give it another read-through. In short stories especially, every word counts. I want this gift to you to be awesome!
This upcoming week will be centered around thinking about Seizing Power, the fifth and final story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February). There’s so much that needs to happen in this story and I want to ensure the first chapter starts in the right place.

Humanoid Alliance Activity Continues
Each story in the cyborg world focuses on one cyborg warrior and his female.
But that doesn’t mean the other beings in the universe haven’t been busy. Death and Tifara on the Homeland, for example, continue to find genetic matches for warriors. Power is assigning roles and having homes fabricated for all the freed cyborgs. Vapor and Mira have been rescuing more war orphans.
And the Humanoid Alliance is planning its evil comeback. They’re building moon-shaped space station bases, fabricating killer robots and are creeping closer to their definition of success with the Resurrected, their super-fast zombies.
The Humanoid Alliance suffered a setback with the rebellion of the cyborgs but they are NOT done with spreading pain and turmoil across the universe. They also haven’t forgotten about the warriors they manufactured and tormented.

Baring Grudge And The Bravery To Say “I Love You”
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, loves Jasny, her protégé. This is obvious to Grudge and to the rest of us from the very start of the story. She would die to protect the girl.
Taelyn merely doesn’t express her love verbally. She lacks the courage to say the words. She’s afraid she’ll lose Jasny as she lost her biological family.
When I was younger, I loved hard and often but I never said the words. My father was a monster and he would hurt anyone or anything I loved. I was also scared, scared the people I loved wouldn’t return my caring.
Telling someone we love them is an act of bravery. It is opening our hearts to them, making ourselves vulnerable.
But it is SO worth it. Today, I tell people I love them every opportunity I am given. I don’t want there to be any doubt how I feel about them. I want them to feel the love. Be brave. Tell the people you love how you feel.

Baring Grudge And A Cyborg’s Home
A reading buddy asked me where Grudge, Taelyn and Jasny would live in the future. Would Grudge take his female and their offspring back to Mercury Minor or would they stay on Antares II?
Grudge, Taelyn and Jasny are definitely making their home on Antares II. That is where Medic Neidan and Mulls and the rest of their extended found family live. The planet is safe. There’s love and caring all around them.
But they will visit Mercury Minor and Grudge’s brethren will visit them. Rancor, Grudge’s best friend, loves to fly and will make Antares II a frequent stop on his routes. Grudge will stay connected with his friends and his brethren.
And when Cadet needs him, he will support her and her cause.

Betrayed By My Eyeballs
I had to get reading glasses yesterday. Text was fuzzy. It was hard to focus on the words.
I was told by the optometrist this happens to most people over the age of 40 but I felt betrayed by my eyeballs. (grins) In the past, I could count on them. I could simply open my eyes and see. Now I need help to view text. It isn’t automatic.
Having faced the challenges of my changing eyesight, I can better relate to cyborgs whose parts don’t function as they were designed.
Strain whose processors are stuck on repeat, replaying the most horrific planet rotation of his life over and over. Grudge whose replacement arm and leg will never truly feel like his originals. B whose limbs creak whenever he moves.
These cyborgs have all be betrayed by their bodies yet they have learned to not only live with their unique issues but thrive with them.
I suspect I’ll reach that same stage also. (Tries to rub my eyes through the lenses.) Once I adjust to wearing these reading glasses. (laughs)

Baring Grudge And Quietly Doing Good
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, has dedicated her lifespan to making the universe a better place.
A stranger wouldn’t know that when they first met her. She flings around f-bombs like they’re futuristic confetti. She growls and snaps at everyone. She keeps her charitable doings super quiet.
I know many people like her, people who give silently, who do good without broadcasting it. And that gives me hope.
Sure, the angry, awful people seem to get more than their fair share of media coverage. But there are many, MANY more people giving back, making the world a more wonderful, kinder place.

Baring Grudge And Learning To Fly
I’m a terrible driver. (I don’t pay attention to the road.) And I haven’t driven in decades but I do have my license. I did ‘unlock’ that achievement. (grins)
Because, here on Earth, learning to drive is often a teenage rite of passage. It is an event that signals increased independence. Once we can drive and we have access to a car, we can go almost anywhere.
In space, the equivalent is learning to fly a ship. In Baring Grudge, Taelyn, the heroine, teaches Jasny, her protégé. Taelyn believes she hasn’t many moments of living left and she wants the girl to both have that skill and associate learning that skill with her.
And for Jasny, the experience IS magical and it is transformative. We see her gaining confidence with every passing moment behind the controls. I love that!

Baring Grudge And Long-Distance Relationships
Grudge and Taelyn have a long-distance relationship for part of Baring Grudge. Grudge remains on the Humanoid Alliance space station. Taelyn returns to her adopted home planet.
They communicate constantly during this separation, learning a lot about each other, what they like, how they think. The distance forces them to put aside their all-consumingly hot physical attraction and focus on their intellectual attraction.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were long-distance early in our relationship. We were attending two different universities in two difference cities.
It was tough. I fully admit that. But we talked every day for hours and we uncovered so much about each other. That gave us a super solid base and when we finally were in the same city, we knew we could get through anything life threw at us.

Grudge, a C Model cyborg, has been assigned a mission – safeguard a Humanoid Alliance space station for his kind. Honor was once all he had, and he is determined to fulfill his duty.
That resolve is tested when a tiny human female enters the space station and sets the prettiest little explosives the warrior has ever seen. She is Grudge’s genetic match, the one being manufactured for him. He wants to touch her, kiss her, claim her in all ways, but first he has to stop her from blasting him into the next galaxy.
Taelyn has a self-appointed mission—to destroy every battle robot the Humanoid Alliance has ever manufactured. A huge gray-skinned, blue-eyed cyborg warrior with mismatched arms won’t prevent her from achieving her goal. She’ll escape him, leaving destruction in her wake.
Before she departs, she’ll experience one toe-curling moment of hatred-edged passion with her handsome foe. She’ll show him how skilled with detonations she truly is. He will have his universe rocked.
Then she’ll disappear.
