Under Strain
A damaged cyborg warrior is hunted by a peace-loving human female.

Strain is severely malfunctioning. The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor after a horrific decision was made by his cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, and told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes place on a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to claim her. Forever.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Giving Back To The World
My cyborg and alien romances wouldn’t be possible without the insights, research and generosity of scientists from all over Earth. They contribute their thoughts, projections, knowledge to details such as nanocybotics and how cyborg babies might be possible. And they often refuse to be compensated for these inputs.
As a thank you, I tend to covertly donate to their favorite charities and causes.
I also donate a small portion of my book sales to ongoing science-based projects such as coral reef restoration and tree planting.
To date, for example, donations sourced from the sales of my books have been responsible for the planting of approximately 353 coral fragments. We have funded the planting of 2,250 trees around our planet.
This might seem trivial in a year when so many people needed help.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I did give to charities such as the local food bank and, most recently, the toy drive. We had a bit extra. It was only right that we share it with others.
However, this year has also shown us how important science and scientists are. Today, we needed scientists with expertise in creating vaccines. Tomorrow, we will likely need evolutionary biologists. It is important to the world that we continue to support science and scientists.

Cynthia Sax 2020 Release Recap
2020 was a strange and challenging year. It was a great year for book releases for me, however (maybe because I was in lockdown in my writing cave for most of it – grins).

Cyborg Celebrations And Fermented Beverage
When beings in the cyborg universe celebrate, they usually share containers of fermented beverage. Fermented beverage, unfortunately, usually does nothing for cyborgs. Their systems won’t allow them to suffer from a buzz or a similar impairment in that way. It DOES, however, impact humans and most non-modified humanoids.
What is the likelihood we can make fermented beverages or a version of alcohol on a life-supporting planet?
Considering, here on Earth, we can make fermented beverages from a wide assortment of plants, the odds are pretty dang good. The ‘science’ also doesn’t require sophisticated equipment. There have been historical references made to alcohol-like beverages since the first century.
I suspect alien counterparts DO have some sort of fermented beverage. They might celebrate their planets’ orbit around their suns with a drink in their hands also. (grins) That prospect makes me smile.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – December 27th
I finished the first draft of Under Strain, the second story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in May) this past week! Woot! This is an action-packed romance. Strain (whom you will meet on page in Containing Malice, February’s release) is a severely damaged D Model. I hurt for him. He is definitely deserving of a Romantic Happy Ever After.
I have 2 more drafts to complete of Under Strain before I send it to my Awesome Editor at the end of January. The bones are good but my crafting of this story is far from done.
I WILL be taking a break this week and a bit of next week, however, spending time with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. Our New Year’s Eve will be extremely quiet this year. We’ll be spending it together, just the two of us. Knowing our neighborhood, someone will likely set off fireworks in the nearby park and, if that doesn’t happen, there is always (weather permitting) nature’s nightly show i.e. we’ll look at the stars.

Boxing Day/Reading Day
Today is Boxing Day here in Canada. In the Before Times, it was a day for awesome sales and great shopping (the equivalent of Black Friday in the US). Stores were clearing out unsold holiday merchandise and it was a great day to pick up a bargain.
In my family, when I was young, Boxing Day was a reading day. Many of us received new or new-to-me or borrowed-from-the-library-as-a-surprise books. On Boxing Days in the past, we snuggled under blankets and read until our eyes ached. (grin)
Today, I plan to do the same thing…once we clear the snow (or exercise in the outdoor gym as the Dear Wonderful Hubby calls it). We’re on lockdown in our section of the universe and I have a stack of new-to-me romance novels calling my name.

Special Holiday Treats
The Dear Wonderful Hubby surprised me with a box of Nanaimo Bars last night. Nanaimo Bars are one of my all time favorite treats. I usually only indulge in them during the winter holidays.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby bought himself a strawberry cheesecake this year from Costco (it is HUGE) and also bought me a chocolate cake. We’ve been working on both of these all week. (It is just the two of us and we’re on lockdown so getting through desserts can be a yummy challenge.)
My Awesome Mom sent me a box of cookies and other baking at the beginning of the month. Some of my favorites in that care package were raisin tarts and chocolate almond bark.

Readers Are Never Truly Alone
Many of us will be in lockdowns over the winter holidays. In my corner of the universe, we can’t meet with people from outside our households. We’re lucky to have two people in our household (the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are the humans in our home). Some households have only one person in them.
One physical person.
Readers like you and I have hundreds, perhaps thousands of characters in our households. They formally sit on our shelves but they often also reside in our heads.
When I was younger, I would read to a wonderful woman in a long term care home. She had been blind for decades but was quickly losing her hearing.
I asked her if she was scared. She would be cut off from others, would be alone.
She smiled at me. “Readers are never alone, my love. We have thousands of friends living up in here.” She tapped her forehead. “I’ll simply be spending more time with them. We’ll have grand adventures and good long chats.”
I remember her words whenever I feel lonely. I’ll look over my bookshelf (virtual and physical) and I’ll choose a dear friend to spend time with. And I don’t feel alone anymore.
Many of us will also be online during the holidays. You can reach out to me whenever you feel like chatting about books or space or other things. (big hugs)
