The Darkness Of War

On this lockdown Remembrance Day, I thought I’d answer one of the questions I often receive from reading buddies – “Do you have to make your stories so dark and violent?”
I write about warriors and war so yes, I DO have to make my stories violent and dark in tone. I believe to skim over the darkness, to minimize the horror of war, how it impacts warriors and others is to dishonor our Earth-based warriors’ experiences and sacrifices.
War is often unfortunately necessary but it IS brutal. I will never forget the expressions on my Great Uncle Frank’s face when he relived moments of battle (you can read about that experience here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ). I have read accounts of war that give me nightmares years later. It is horrific.
War changes people forever. It impacts relationships. It touches almost all aspects of a warrior’s life present and future. Just as there is no such thing as an ex-Marine, there is also no such thing as an ex-warrior in any other role. The experience stays with anyone (real or fictional) who has endured it.
Our warriors are making extreme sacrifices to protect us, defend us, keep us safe. I would never want to minimize their service or experiences in any way.

Cynthia Sax Upcoming Releases
Some reading buddies have asked about the stories I’m releasing next. (tackle hugs)
Holding Hoarse, my gift to you, will be releasing at the beginning of December. This FREE short story will be distributed via BookFunnel. I’ll post about it here on my blog, on Twitter and Instagram, and in my newsletter.
An omnibus containing some of the Cyborg Sizzle stories is releasing in January 2021. There will also be a C.S. Sax short story collection releasing in that month.
Containing Malice, the 1st cyborg romance in the new Rebel Cyborgs, will be releasing in February. I’ll be releasing the stories in this series every three months as I can’t wait to tell them. Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – November 8th
Containing Malice (releasing in February and available for pre-ordering now) is with my Awesome Editor! Woot! Of course, I found some continuity issues and typos as soon as I sent it but that is why there are 3 more rounds of revisions before the story is finalized.
If you enjoyed Releasing Rage, I think you will like this story. It has the same vibe to it. I love Malice, the extremely angry C Model hero, and Illona, the determined-to-save-him Medic heroine. They are special apart and they are magical together.
I slept almost all of yesterday and plan to sleep almost all of today. (grins) I push it during the second and third drafts of a story. And I need to restore my energy levels as the cyborgs would call it.
Tomorrow, I plan to start revising three short stories for the next C.S. Sax collection. The first story features a unicorn-shifter Prince. (grins) These short stories are so much fun!

Warlord’s Return And Returning To The Refuge
In Warlord’s Return, we return to the Refuge, the settlement Kralj and Dita (from Dark Thoughts) rule. Oghul (from Dark Warlord) is visiting his brother and his brother’s gerel. The Chameles are looking forward to training with the Modified Humanoids.
Some reading buddies have asked me if we will return to the Refuge again in the future. Will we visit with Kralj and Dita again, spend more time with the flying triplets and the others?
Yes. Definitely yes. (grins)
I don’t have immediate plans for another story set in the Refuge. The next year is all about the Rebel Cyborgs and Power getting his a$$ handed to him. (laughs) Containing Malice, the first story, is explosive.
But we will absolutely be returning to the Refuge in the future. I want to write next generation stories and some of the Modified Humanoids deserve to find their mates.

NaNoWriMo
November is NAtional NOvel WRiting MOnth (i.e. NaNoWriMo), a month in which many writers challenge themselves to write 50,000 words in 30 days.
(If your favorite writers disappear, they are likely participating in NaNoWriMo.)
It is often a lot of fun. Writers don’t have very many group events. This is one of them and many of us embrace NaNoWriMo.
I NEVER win NaNoWriMo. November is a huge revisions and edits month as editors prepare for the holiday season. That takes time away from writing fresh words.
November is also a very busy month in other areas. There is holiday shopping and charity work and the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I like to participate in US Thanksgiving (meeting with family and friends will be done over videochats this year).
If you’re participating in NaNoWriMo and you don’t win, that’s fine! The 50,000 word official goal is just a number someone made up. The true goals are to give the writing a little more focus and hopefully write a few more words and have fun.
This month, I plan to do very little fresh writing. I’m currently revising Containing Malice (releasing in February). After that has been completed, my goal is to revise three more short stories for the next C.S. Sax collection.
So I won’t be officially part of NaNoWriMo this year but I WILL be cheering for my writing buddies! Have a blast with it and celebrate the writing!

Warlord’s Return And Spoilers
Warlord’s Return release tomorrow (or tonight if you’ve pre-ordered this story)! Woot! I’m super excited about this release. I can’t wait for you to read this story.
There WILL be spoilers posted. There always are but there especially will be for Warlord’s Return.
This is the last story in the series. Reading buddies…and I (grins) tend to talk about last stories in series more freely. I’m not quite sure why I do this but I do and others do this also.
Things also…happen as they tend to do in my stories. (laughs) There are appearances made by many previously featured couples and characters. A big event happens for one of these couples in the first three chapters of the story. The earlier in the story an event happens, the more likely it is talked about freely. Again, I do this also. It WILL occur.
If you don’t want to see spoilers, pre-order today (you’ll receive the story sooner) and don’t look at reviews. You can spend tomorrow at the Refuge, hanging out with the Chameles and Kralj and Dita and not have to worry about seeing story info you don’t want to see.
It’s warm in the Refuge right now. (smiles) Dress accordingly and drink lots of beverage. Say hi to Balvan, the great green gatekeeper, as you approach the gates. Wave to Orol and the triplets as they soar over your heads. Show Kralj the respect he deserves and only think flattering thoughts about Dita.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – November 1st
I hope you all had a great Halloween and did you see the Blue Moon? It was awesome. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I went outside to see it and it was shining right through the clouds.
This upcoming week is jam-packed for me. Warlord’s Return is releasing on Tuesday. I’m super excited about this story. If you’re a fan of the Refuge series or the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series, I think you’ll really enjoy it. It is a love letter to those two series.
