The Tomato Saga
Up north, when I was a kid, we didn’t care if a tomato was indeterminate (never stopped growing) or determinate (only grew to a certain size).
Heck. I didn’t even know there were different kinds of tomatoes when I was younger. We harvested seeds from the previous year’s tomatoes to grow.
Were they heirloom, hybrid, beefsteak, other? We didn’t know.
And it didn’t really matter. Our growing season was so short, if we started the tomatoes from seed outside, they never grew very tall.
Frost would come when the tomatoes were still green. We’d pick them, wrap them in newspaper, put them in the cool unfinished basement to ripen.
Each plant, if we were lucky, would give us about 4 or 5 tomatoes. That was a good harvest for us.
I warned my city-boy Dear Wonderful Hubby we’d likely get 4 or 5 tomatoes per plant this year. We had a lot of successful plants (around 30 of them). That yield would give us enough tomatoes for the year plus we’d have some extras to give to loved ones.
I miscalculated.
(sheepish grin)
We started the tomato plants inside the house and we’re growing them in the south (of Canada) now. We have a MUCH longer growing season.
And I think some of the plants are indeterminate because they seem to produce more flowers every dang day.
Anyhoo… if all those flowers bear tomatoes, we’ll likely have enough tomatoes to feed our entire neighborhood.
That is a happy problem to have.

What Is Dave Doing Now?
Fun is part of a writer’s life and one of my joys is finding a minor character in my story to name Dave. I do this as often as possible.
Dave, in the cyborg world, is usually loyal to the Humanoid Alliance. He’s human and male. He also often dies…in different and interesting ways.
In Provoking Odium, he is thrown against a tree. Hard.
Dave isn’t always a terrible being. Sometimes, he’s merely inept. Sometimes, he’s helpful.
But he’s always a Dave. (grins)

Taking Precautions
In Provoking Odium, the cyborgs are installing and testing satellites. These devices will monitor and protect their borders.
Because the Humanoid Alliance, their enemy, is yet again expanding their horrid empire. And the cyborgs know that eventually their foes will attack their sector.
The cyborgs are taking these precautions on the page. But there are thousands of warriors working off the page on tactics to neutralize the Humanoid Alliance’s undead armies and their armies of robots.
The cyborgs are preparing.

Muse Food – Snails And The Small Alien World Around Us
One of the places I look when I’m searching for inspiration for alien worlds is…
at the insect or tiny creature level.
There are an abundance of truly strange little critters all around us.
Look at this beautiful snail I found on our driveway, for example.
She is bringing her colorful home with her.
Her entire form flows and undulates as she moves. She is headed somewhere. I don’t know where or for what reason but I can imagine all of this.
And look at the textures on the branch, the gazillion shades of green, the glistening slime the snail has left behind her.
I find all this…inspiring.

Provoking Odium And Possessiveness
In Provoking Odium, Odium initially views Mohini as a rival for Briella’s attentions.
He hasn’t yet claimed Briella, is frustrated by the distance between them, by their long distance relationship. And he knows Briella is a one-of-a-kind female, a female anyone would battle to have as their own.
He also only has bits and pieces of information. He hears how Briella speaks about Mohini, sees on the footage the caring the two females have for each other. Their emotional bond appears to rival the one he has with Briella.
This over-the-top initial possessiveness won’t likely extend to other platonic relationships.
Cyborgs value friendships. Their relationships with their brethren and with others are special for them and they would never deprive their genetic matches of similar relationships.
Once a cyborg has claimed their genetic match completely and that bond has solidified, they become more confident and tend to react less emotionally to friendships and other relationships.
They realize their genetic match is theirs. Forever.

Competitive In All Ways
In Provoking Odium, the beings on Mercury Minor have a dance ‘battle’. Some of the cyborg warriors are determined to ‘win’ this contest.
There are a number of reasons for this.
The Humanoid Alliance allowed only the best cyborg warriors to live. They decommissioned any warriors they believed were below spec. It was in a cyborg’s best interest to outfight everyone else.
On the battlefield, cyborgs had to outfight their designated foes or they (and likely their friends) would die. Again, they had to be the best or they risked death.
Now that they’re free, the cyborgs remained acutely aware that the enemy could try to retrieve or kill them. They have to remain the best warriors or they might lose their freedom.
And they feel their genetic matches, if they’re fortunate to find them, deserve to be protected by the best warriors possible. A skill like dancing might also impress their fated mates. (grins)

Old Tech
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I visited The Breakers, an amazing mansion in Newport, Rhode Island, recently. They had a lot of old tech.
Why do I love old tech?
Because many ideas used in old tech are used in new tech. And it might be used in future communications devices.
I find them inspiring.
This telephone and buzzer notification system was utilized by the lady of the house. It was installed in her private space.
These speaker tubes were utilized by the servants. They talked to other servants situated on the lower floors.

YES. She is the heroine in Grin And Bare Him, the next story in the Cyborg Unity series.
YES. She has a GREAT (universe-saving) reason for needing a ship.
YES. She also has valid reasons for not telling anyone those reasons.
And YES. She IS a humanoid but I suspect you’ll be able to relate to her. She’s purple. (grins) But she otherwise resembles a human. She has the power of persuasion. But I know some people here on Earth who seem to always convince me to do what they want me to do. (laughs)

The Imperfect Hero/Heroine
My favorite heroes/heroines in romance novels are never perfect. They have faults. They make mistakes. They are often pushed into deeds of heroism.
Imperfect heroes/heroines are interesting. I can’t assume they’ll always do the right thing. That keeps me guessing.
It also gives me hope I’ll be the heroine in my own story. I’m not perfect. (laughs) I’m no where close to that. No one is. We’re human (most of us – grins) and humans make mistakes.
But that shouldn’t stop me from trying to make the world a better place in some small (or big) way.
If someone like Briella in Provoking Odium can be a heroine to admire, to respect, I can be a heroine also.
