Attending Gardening Events
Gardeners wake up early.
We kind of have to do that. Because, in a slug-infested area, early morning, right before the sun’s rays hit the plants, is the absolute best time for general watering.
I also do an early morning garden patrol to ensure critters haven’t dug up plants during the evening, night or early morning. If they have, I stick the plants back in the ground and these plants MIGHT survive.
Many gardeners also like to care for their plants before they trek off to day jobs. Tasks get completed and we have a few moments of Zen in the morning.
So if you’re attending gardening events, say a plant sale or seed swap, know that most of the gardeners will be there super early in the event’s time frame. That’s when you’ll have the best choice and it is when you’ll meet the most people.

2025 Gardening Lessons – Track Your Harvests
(Butternut squash and Sugarbaby Watermelon on the vine, protected from squirrels with the wire mesh and mini bamboo skewers and given extra heat with black plastic bags on the ground over the root area plus cardboard for weed suppression.
It isn’t pretty but it works for us. – grins))
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I like to harvest our vegetables and fruits when they’re ready (and sometimes before they’re ready). Because it is fun. And because…squirrels. (grins)
This means we’re harvesting a little bit at a time and that doesn’t seem like a lot but over the length of the growing season, that adds up.
This year, we tracked those mini harvests.
And we were both surprised at the total. We didn’t think we harvested much of anything. But we had. We simply hadn’t noticed it.
Track your harvests. Especially if you harvest daily.

Mafia Squirrel Dance Party Weekends
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spend a lot of time in our back yard during the weekdays, from Monday to Friday. We live in the city and most of our neighbors are at work or completing other tasks. It is peaceful and relaxing.
During the weekends, we tend to give our now-at-home neighbors that same peacefulness. We avoid our fenced in back yard and allow them the illusion they’re alone with nature.
The Mafia Squirrels and other non-human creatures in the neighborhood have noticed that routine.
So they tend to spend the weekends in OUR back yard, avoiding the humans rummaging around in other areas.
Yes, it is a Mafia Squirrel Dance Party in our back yard every weekend.

Although the Mafia Squirrels are usually quite territorial during the rest of the week, they tolerate…sort of…the proximity of their rivals for those couple days.
It is like a Disney movie. Except they, unfortunately, don’t clean our home.

Watching The Garden Grow
All of the seedlings have been planted in the backyard vegetable bed. Yay! They are still very small but it does look like a legitimate garden now. (smiles)
I joke about sitting back and watching the garden grow.
There are still tasks to complete in the garden. I’m composting. I’m weeding. I’m replanting whatever the mafia squirrels dig up. I’m training the peas along the string trestle. And interesting tasks like that.
But the hard work IS over…until harvest begins.
