Gardening – Good Soil Rarely Just Happens
I was chatting with a neighbor and he was talking about how terrible his soil is and how he wishes he had good soil like we do.
He COULD easily have good soil like we do. He could have BETTER soil. He has more trees and that gives him more leaves to mulch with.
But he doesn’t use those leaves. He doesn’t spread them over the garden as mulch. Or create leaf mold with them. He bags the leaves and the city picks them up for THEIR composting program.
He doesn’t compost. And he doesn’t buy compost. None of that good stuff is sprinkled over his yard.
He certainly doesn’t get bags of used coffee grounds from the coffee shops and sprinkle THAT over his year.
He also bags his grass after he has cut it. He doesn’t leave it on the ground as free fertilizer.
His yard is extremely neat. But his soil sucks. And this is starting to impact his grass and other plants. They are being starved of nutrients and stressed. His soil also doesn’t hold much moisture. When the heat of the summer comes, the plants will likely die.
Good soil doesn’t take much work. It certainly takes less work than what he’s doing to keep his yard his version of tidy. But it doesn’t merely happen.

Gardening – Composting In Winter
Some gardening experts advise to freeze kitchen scraps over winter and then place them in compost bins in the spring. They rightly relay that composting slows significantly, perhaps even stopping over the winter.
I trek through the snow and place my kitchen scraps in the compost bin.
Why?
My freezer is almost always full. It is relatively full from the fall harvests. We’re thankful for that. And we freeze meat, milk, bread, etc. that the super skilled bargain hunting Dear Wonderful Hubby finds on sale.
Our compost bin also has a black lid. Which heats up the bin. And, with climate change, we sometimes have 10C/50C days in the middle of winter now.
I’m finding more and more that composting DOES happen over the winter. I don’t want to waste those great compost days.

Caring For Our Soil
Everything comes from something else. The nutrients in our food, for example, come from the nutrients in our soil. This is why soil integrity is so fraggin’ important.
In the past, I did a sh*t job at caring for the soil around our home. I would put (excessive) weeds and prune the rose bushes and send all that to the city for composting. Which was a great thing to do. Except I never gathered that compost from the city. I didn’t sprinkle it on the ground, returning those nutrients to the soil.
Which meant my soil was depleted of all that good stuff.
I’m trying to restore the balance now. I am creating our own compost and I’m returning those nutrients back to the soil.
We live and we learn and we do better. (smiles)

March, Spring And Gardening
The first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere is March 20th. But, in my section of the hemisphere, the last frost date has been May 11th at the earliest.
What will be the last frost date this year? I don’t know. If I had to guess, I would say earlier than May 11th. Climate change has been hitting us hard. We had more rain than snow over the winter. It was…bizarre.
I won’t be planting much until May 11th, however, just to be cautious.
Before that date, I’ll be working on improving the soil. I’ll turn the leaf mulch and the compost, spread some manure, making the worms and insects happy.
The dandelions are already flowering, which is great for the bumblebees when they emerge from their underground homes. They’ll have a source of food.
There is much to do before planting and that gives me joy.

Containers For Composting
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I have always composted. There is something wonderful about returning fruits, veggies, leaves and other plant materials to the earth. Composting also produces free high quality dirt and that’s the best price going. (grins)
When our city started their mass composting program, collecting our compostable stuff at the curb, I got a bit lazy about our own backyard composting. But now that we have the vegetable garden, I’ve gotten serious about it again.
When we first started composting, before the city collection program, the city supplied wonderful backyard composting bins to residents. Silly me. I only took one of them. We’re still using that compost bin today.
But we’ll soon need at least one, maybe two additional composting bins. We’ll likely go the cheapie garbage bin route. We’ll drill holes in the bottom and sides of a big garbage bin and voila, along with a well-sealing lid (to keep the critters and rain out), we’ll have a new composting bin.
It is THAT easy to create a composting bin. Some balcony gardeners create them using small pails.
