Containing Malice And Before Release Rituals
Containing Malice releases on Tuesday! Woot!
I’m super excited, can’t wait to hear what you think of this new cyborg romance story and series.
While I wait, (having completed my revisions for the unicorn shifter short story this week) there are a few things I usually do before a book releases.
- I craft my newsletter. This will be sent out on Tuesday, Release Day, and will feature some fun facts about Containing Malice and some VERY bad jokes.
- I eat chocolate. Well…I always eat chocolate. That is one of my key food groups and it fuels my muse. But I eat more of it than I usually do.
- I worry I haven’t uploaded the finished copy to Amazon and other booksellers. I HAVE uploaded it. I’ve checked it a gazillion times. And if I haven’t done this by now, it is much too late. The story is locked at booksellers. But I worry because…that’s what I do.
- I re-read the story about to release and find a gazillion typos I can’t correct because the story is locked. This happens EVERY time. There are no error-free stories out there. None. Yet I will torment myself by looking for these errors much too late. (grins)
- I will look at pre-orders. If pre-orders are lower than they are for the previous story, I will often not-so-stealthily reach out to reading buddies (I know almost EVERYONE who reads and pre-orders my stories. Many of you have been with me from Releasing Rage or prior stories and you are part of my family.). If pre-orders are higher, I try not to do this. I know everyone is super busy and I also know you will reach out to me if you want to chat.
- I eat more chocolate. (grins) And I bake brownies. I will often send some to my Awesome In-laws. The Dear Wonderful Hubby’s youngest brother loves the brownies.

Containing Malice
This tormented cyborg craves vengeance…and her.
***
Malice, a C Model cyborg, has spent his long lifespan enslaved by the Humanoid Alliance. His cruel manufacturers have hurt him in all the ways a male could be hurt.
His enemy has now added a new weapon to their arsenal—a tiny human medic with soft hands and a delectable scent. She experiments on him multiple times a shift, delivering pain…and frustration.
He wants her. He also seeks retribution.
Once Malice frees himself, he plans to achieve both of his goals, taking Medic Illona captive and ending her research…permanently.
Illona is as much a prisoner as the cyborgs she experiments on. Since her arrival at the Human Alliance’s secret laboratory, she has carefully, stealthily, crafted a plot to free her test subjects. To conceal her covert activities, the medic has been forced to harm beings rather than heal them.
The being she has damaged the most is also the cyborg she fiercely desires— Malice, a huge, gray-skinned, blue-eyed C Model with massive hands and a voice deeper than space. He hates her, has good reason to do so, and, when he’s freed, there’s a high probability he’ll kill her.
Illona will take that risk to ensure he survives.

The Cyborg Sizzle Rebellion Omnibus And Sales Of Collections
The Cyborg Sizzle Rebellion Omnibus released on Tuesday. This is my second single author (That author is me. – grins) collection and some writing buddies have asked me if it is worth the time and effort and money to release them.
If the goal is immediate sales, the answer is a resounding no. (laughs)
I’ve heard about how Kobo readers LOVE collections and other ‘myths.’ My results don’t show that. My omnibuses sell WORSE at Kobo than at any other booksellers.
(I haven’t slashed the prices and promoted the omnibuses through BookBub, however. And I doubt I will do that. I prefer BookBub feature my individual stories.)
On the upside, I’ve met a few new-to-me readers through these omnibuses and I really like having all the stories in one place, in the Cyborg Romance Continuum. The omnibuses will allow future reading buddies to catch up easily. The covers, designed by the oh-so-talented Amanda Kelsey from Razzle Dazzle Design, are also wonderful. I love looking at them.
It might not make financial or business sense but I will likely release omnibuses in the future. I take quite a few actions that aren’t financially savvy so please don’t blindly copy what I’m doing. Reach out to me and I’ll give you my insights on whatever you’re planning to do.

Cyborg Sizzle Rebellion Omnibus
Rebellion. Freedom. Love.
* * *
The time has come for the cyborgs to rebel against their cruel manufacturers. As they fight for their freedom, they’ll encounter the human females they’re fated to love and protect for all eternity.
This omnibus includes four stories in the Cyborg Sizzle series: Hers To Command, Ghost Of A Machine, Seeking Vector and Knowing Zip.
All of these Cyborg Romances are set in a dark, gritty, often violent universe.
Hers To Command
Ace and Thrasher share a special bond. They’ve never acknowledged that connection and have never fully acted on it. The Humanoid Alliance kill cyborg males like them, deeming the warriors to be defective. Now that Ace and Thrasher have escaped, they don’t trust the cyborg council and their brethren to react any differently. Physical love is too risky for them to consider.
Until they meet her.
Ghost Of A Machine
Ghost, a C Model cyborg, has disconnected his machine from his human side. Severely damaged, he knows two things—the curvy human female on his ship belongs to him and he must keep her safe. He’ll stop at nothing to protect her, claim her, make her his.
Seeking Vector
Vector, the C Model captain of the Freedom, is a cyborg many warriors wish to emulate. He fights fiercely, leads with honor, has earned the respect and loyalty of his crew. But no being, not even a cyborg, is perfect. Since arriving at the Homeland, Vector has been hiding a dark truth about his past. If his secret is exposed, he could lose everything – his position, his ship, and his life.
She excels at uncovering secrets.
Knowing Zip
Zip is the last of his friends to find his female, the one being meant for him. He isn’t certain she exists until he hears her voice over a transmission. A self-proclaimed systems deity, he researches his curvy little human and discovers she dreams of being abducted by a big, strong warrior. Zip plans to make his female’s fantasies come true.

Using BookFunnel For Free Short Stories Going Forward
I enjoy giving you and other reading buddies a free short story every year as a gift. I love you. I appreciate that you read my stories. I show this love and appreciation by…well…writing more words. (grins)
In the past, I have loaded these free stories to booksellers. That is, unfortunately, no longer possible.
Why I Won’t Be Loading Free Short Stories To Booksellers (Amazon, Apple, B&N, Kobo, etc) Going Forward
None of the booksellers are big fans of free books.
The free books cost them money to supply to readers. And they’re making it tougher and tougher to offer free books, I suspect, for this reason. It takes me about a month of daily emails to change the price to free at one of the booksellers. Then I have to check the price every month in every region to ensure they haven’t started charging for the story again.
Booksellers Treat Short Stories Differently.
Another reason is booksellers treat short stories differently in a series. One bookseller assigns half numbers to short stories (2.5 etc). Another bookseller doesn’t allow half numbers.
One bookseller won’t add short stories to series pages at all. Books 1-4 of Cyborg Sizzle are displayed. Book 5 is missing. Book 6 is displayed. Book 7 is missing.
This inconsistency…unsettles me (I say this as I am sorting some of my Halloween M&M candies by color).
The Solution
Thankfully, there is a solution. It isn’t perfect but it will hopefully allow me to treat you to a free short story every year…and perhaps give you more ‘treats.’
I will offer both the Kindle/Mobi files and the EPub files (which are good for Apple Books, B&N, Kobo, etc) on BookFunnel ( an example is here – https://dl.bookfunnel.com/tr6fc87pzq ).
It will ask you for your email address and to sign up for my newsletter and then it will email the story to you. There are support folks who will help you if you need it or if something goes wrong. But they make the process fairly simple to complete.
The Possibility Of More ‘Treats’
Aligning with BookFunnel will allow me to do other things…like offer the character updates and short snippets I share in the newsletters in eBook format so you can collect them in your libraries and read them on your eReaders.
I have a gazillion other fun and free ideas.
Anyhoo…I’m sorry to add more change in a year already jampacked with change but I’m hoping this will be a happy, wonderful change. I’m quite excited about the possibilities!

Warlord’s Return
Ariq is a barbarian warrior seeking a war.
He locates that battle when he meets Xareni.
* * *
Ariq is one of Chamele’s top warriors. A genetic predisposition to fighting, paired with intensive training and experience, has honed the scarred male into an effective killing machine. He loves war, can’t live without combat.
The Succession Wars, however, have finally ended and the Chamele sector is now at peace. Seeking excitement and purpose, the barbarian warrior accompanies his Second to the Refuge, an outlaw settlement on Carinae E. He hopes to locate the battle he’s been craving there.
Ariq finds that conflict and more when he meets his fated mate.
Xareni owes the Ruler of the Refuge a favor. That’s the only reason she has returned to the settlement. She doesn’t like crowds or structures or a certain barbarian warrior who insists on following her everywhere. It doesn’t matter that there’s a connection between them, that he makes her burn with desire, that he looks at her with heat in his dark eyes.
She’s a monster and monsters don’t need anyone.
* * *
Warlord’s Return is a STANDALONE Alien Barbarian SciFi Romance featuring a determined barbarian warrior, an equally resolute human female, and an eyeball-eating mini dragon.

Refuges And Writing Caves
The settlement Kralj built and rules on Carinae E is called the Refuge. There’s a reason for this name. Even the roughest, most violent ‘monsters’ (as he calls himself and beings like him) deserve to have somewhere they can feel safer, where they belong, where they find a sliver of peace, of self-care, of self-acceptance.
When I was a kid, there was a weeping willow type tree on our property. The tips of the branches reached the ground. It was like having a closed room in the middle of the field. No one could see the trunk, could see past the branches.
That was one of my favorite refuges (and, in recognition of that, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I planted a weeping willow type tree in front of our current home). I would take a book, slip between its branches, sit on the ground and disappear from the world, from everyone. I felt safer there. I felt at peace. The place calmed me.
Today, that refuge is the writing cave. When the world is dark and my soul is tired, I turn on my laptop, open either an unfinished story or a blank page, and I write, disappearing into the world I’m creating. It calms me. It restores me. It gives me the strength to face the rest of the world.
That’s where I am today. I hope that you also are able to spend some time today in your refuge, your sanctuary. That could be between the pages of a great cyborg romance or in a bubble bath or sitting on your front steps where you can watch the kids run through the sprinkler. I hope you go wherever you find peace.
You deserve to escape for a few moments.

Testing Truth
A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.
***
Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.
When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.
That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.
Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.
But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.
If they survive their current mission.
Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Family (Including Pets) Of Book Characters
My Awesome Mom is a cozy mystery reader. Many heroines in cozy mysteries have pets.
My Mom worries about these pets. This was a recent conversation I enjoyed with her.
***
Awesome Mom: (on the phone) The lady in this book has been away from her border collie all day. She’s going to return to an ‘accident’ on the carpet. That’s for certain.
Cynthia Sax: (grins) Dogs in books don’t tend to have ‘accidents.’
Awesome Mom: They might not say it on the page but you and I both know that border collie is leaving a ‘gift’ in one of her shoes.
LOL
***
We, as readers, tend to care about a character’s family members, including fur babies. As a writer, I care about them also.
It is one of the HUGE considerations when writing stories. The heroine might have found love with a hunky cyborg but what happens to her loving parents? Will THEY be happy with her daughter living on a faraway planet? Will the hero’s being-eating ‘pet’ be happy living on a crowded ship? Will the hero’s brethren accept the heroine’s newborn human female?
I not only look at their current happiness but I also consider their future happiness. What happens when the newborn becomes a toddler or a teenager or an adult? What happens when the parents get older or need help? Will the being-eating pet want a family of his own?
The hero or heroine would consider the happiness of their loved ones. As a writer, I do the same.

Pantsing, Plotting and Plotzing
There are three types of writers.
Plotters
These are writers who know the entire story before they sit down to write that first line. They are more likely to have elaborate plot diagrams and character interviews and other wonderful things. They know the goals, motivations, conflicts, where the turning points are, what type of words their heroine would use in sentences.
Pantsers
These are writers who write by the seat of their pants. They sit down to a blank screen, knowing nothing or only knowing that first scene. Their characters lead them. They type as quickly as they can and try to keep up with their characters.
Plotzers
Plotzers are a combination of the first two writers. They might know their characters but they don’t know the plot. They might have one line about every chapter but not much else. They might plot and then throw out that plot halfway through the first draft.
Which Type Of Writer Is Best?
There is no way of knowing, by reading a story, which type of writer wrote the story. There are best selling plotters, best selling pantsers, best selling plotzers. There are pantsers who write the most intricate 10 story series. There are plotters who only write standalone stories.
There ARE a gazillion books on plotting or explaining how a pantser can become a plotter. IMHO…if a pantser can become a plotter, she was likely either truly a plotzer or a plotter OR something happened that caused her brain to change (some of my writing buddies say this can happen during menopause, for example).
I can’t plot. Or, more specifically, I can craft a plot but then the story doesn’t get written or it deviates wildly from that plot or it has zero magic. The magic is in the pantsing for me. I can’t seem to find it with plotting (other writers can ONLY find the magic with plotting).
Why aren’t there a gazillion books on pantsing? Because pantsing is very challenging to explain to another writer and pantsing is also often different for each writer. I see a movie in my head (it is like dreaming). Some writers hear only dialogue. Some writers see text.
The Trad World Is Designed For Plotters
One of the reasons pantsers attempt to become plotters is because the world doesn’t understand pantsing.
Agents and editors, especially those associated with the big New York Trad Publishers, ask for things like partials, for example. Partials consist of the first 3 chapters and a synopsis detailing the ENTIRE story. A pantser doesn’t have this unless she has written the entire story. I would make sh*t up and then go through the painful exercise of refining a plot I knew I’d never write. (This is one of the many reasons I’m so happy to be Indie now.)
Plotters Vs Pantsers And Writing Speed
Another reason pantsers attempt to become plotters is due to the myth floating around that plotters complete stories faster than pantsers.
That’s complete bullsh*t. There’s no correlation between the type of writer and writing speed. I, as a pantser, do one more draft than many of my plotting buddies but I also don’t take a week or more thinking about my plot and characters. It all evens out.
Do I throw away scenes? Yes, I do. But I learned things about my characters when I wrote those scenes. They weren’t wasted scenes. And, thankfully, words are plentiful. I don’t have to worry about running out of them. (grins)
Plotters throw out their diagrams after their books are published and that doesn’t seem to concern anyone.
Forcing yourself to write in an unnatural way also increases the likelihood you’ll get word constipation. If you’re not writing any words, you’re not completing stories quickly.
Which Type Of Writer Are You?
The best way to figure out which type of writer you are is to try a variety of writing techniques. Try plotting. Try pantsing. Try a combination of the two. Try different techniques. Read different books on crafting stories.
If you try 5 or 6 techniques and one way works best for you, use that technique until it stops working for you. Then consider going through the process again.
Pantsing And Craft
There’s a myth that pansters don’t need to learn craft (learning 3 act structure or GMC or turning points, etc). IMHO…I find it is the opposite for me. I need to know craft so fraggin’ well; I internalize it during the writing of the first draft. I also need to know it when my first draft doesn’t quite work. Maybe my structure is off. Maybe I have to look at my characters again.
Being a pantser is NOT a reason to ignore craft.
Do Whatever Works For You
Do whatever works for you. If a technique is working for you, if it makes you happy, pleases the muse, gets stories written, think before changing your technique.
If someone tells you there’s one ‘right way’ to write, smile and nod and then purge that feedback from your brain. They’ve found THEIR ‘right way’ for the moment and that’s awesome. I’m happy for them.
But their ‘right way’ might not be YOUR ‘right way’.

Book Brain And Writers Working Weekends
My goal for today is to complete the second draft of Warlord’s Return (releasing in November). That requires revising the last three chapters.
I have SEVERE book brain. The book is all I can think about. The Dear Wonderful Hubby knows there is no holding a logical conversation with me on days like this. I am useless for making decisions. He usually either makes dinner or he orders it…and he always has quite a bit of chocolate on hand. (grins)
It is Saturday and I woke at my usual 8 am and will likely work until 2am or longer. I don’t usually work THIS hard on a weekend, only when I’m completing second drafts, but I almost always do something writing-related.
Many writers work weekends. Writers who juggle a full time job in another field with the writing often devote their weekends to writing. We might not appear as much on social media or answer emails on the weekend but that doesn’t mean we’re not working.
Being a writer is, in my humble opinion, one of the best jobs in the world. When we love what we do, we tend to do it more often…and on weekends. (smiles)

Story Ripples
One of the many things I love about writing in a (now) huge world like the cyborg series is I have the ability to see the ripples actions make throughout the universe.
Almost every story can be read on its own and that holds true for Testing Truth but the more stories you read, the more impact certain events will have on you, the more meaning they will have.
In Testing Truth, as one small example, the heroine’s planet had been occupied by the Humanoid Alliance. When the cyborgs rebelled, they took away the Humanoid Alliance’s fighting force. The Humanoid Alliance couldn’t hold the heroine’s planet. They retreated. The heroine and her subjects were freed.
(This is all relayed in the second chapter. It isn’t a spoiler.)
The actions in a story occurring 7 core stories ago impact this story. Truth wouldn’t have met his female in his story if the cyborgs hadn’t mass rebelled.
Every story changes the cyborgs’ world a little bit. The actions in Testing Truth will add more ripples to the world, especially for the Rebel cyborgs.
This is one of reasons I doubt I’ll ever get series fatigue. The world and the occupants of that world constantly change.

The Power Of Books During A Crisis
My Awesome Mom hasn’t left her small apartment since the middle of March. She hasn’t seen her kids or grandkids in person (except for my eldest brother who lives with her) since then. Being at high risk, she can’t allow anyone to visit her. Her beloved baseball has also been postponed. I worried she’d find all this challenging.
She is incredibly and marvelously happy.
Why?
One of the reasons she’s happy is because she has discovered large print cozy mysteries. She has been reading at least one of those a day. They give her an escape into another world, a world in which there is murder (grins) but that murder is always solved and there is no pandemic.
These books have not only given her joy but they have greatly eased my concerns over her emotional wellbeing.
Reading and writing stories during a crisis might seem like a trivial use of our time. In the movies, during times of crisis, people are constantly fighting to survive, battling the baddies. There’s no downtime. It is all action all the time.
This is reality, however, and we need downtime. We also need happiness. To experience moments of joy at a time like this, to have the ability to leave all our troubles behind and escape is essential. It is magical. It empowers us to handle everything else.
That’s not trivial. At all. That’s a gift, one we should cherish.

Warlord’s Return And Finishing A First Draft
I finished the first draft of Warlord’s Return (releasing in November) yesterday. Woot!
It is a steaming piece of sh*t as all of my first drafts are but the bones of the story are solid, the couple (Ariq and a heroine you haven’t yet met) is magical together, and I believe you’ll really like this 6th and final installment of the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series. We return to the Refuge, the home of Kralj, so we interact not only with the Chameles but also with the modified humanoids (the flying triplets are physically grown and are causing chaos).
Completing a first draft is a time for celebration in the Sax household. Heck, any win at all is a time for celebration and completing a first draft is a HUGE win. As Jodi Picoult says, “You can always edit a bad page. You can’t edit a blank page.” And as my awesome editor once told me, I have to write the first draft. She can’t help me with that. She CAN help me with everything else.
Even if the first draft sucks big hairy donkey balls, it is an achievement. It gives writers and editors something to work with and that is a very good place to be. Celebrate those first drafts.
If my schedule allows it (laughs semi-hysterically), I set aside a first draft for a day or two, give myself some space, some distance from it, before rolling into the extremely intense second draft. I tend to continue thinking about the story and jot down ideas, solutions to plot holes, etc to include when I pick it back up again.
The timing of this completed first draft is great because Testing Truth (releasing in September) has returned from my awesome editor. I’ll work on that today and this weekend.
Then on Monday, I’ll start the second draft.

Other Chameles view him as the enemy.
She sees the warrior hero he never believed he could be.

Tolui is a Warlord in search of a planet to rule. He has been leading his fellow clones in a stealth battle, fighting for both control of the Chamele sector and the right to exist. The brave warriors he commands warrant respect, and they deserve the best.
That best isn’t the barren, dangerous terrain on Chamele 4. When Tolui crashes on that planet’s surface, he’s determined to leave it as soon as possible. The tiny human female rescuing him might be as beautiful and as wild as the land she inhabits, but her flowing words, trusting gaze, and enthralling submission won’t stop him from rejoining the war.
After many solar cycles of living alone, Lea is overjoyed when a tall, scarred, muscular warrior falls from the sky. Her savage stranger is strong and severe, and he makes her feel safe, an emotion she hasn’t experienced in a long, long time.
He also insists they must part. Before they do, she’ll show him the splendor of her home, and she’ll enjoy his big form, collecting passionate moments she can revisit when she’s solitary once more.
Every additional moment Lea and Tolui spend together increases the chance they’ll both die. Lea is being chased by female-hating fiends. Tolui is being hunted by the best bounty hunters in the universe. War will soon arrive on their threshold, and the blood spilled might be their own.

Warlord’s Mercy is based on a much shorter story sharing the same title.
It is a STANDALONE Alien Barbarian SciFi Romance featuring a villain turned hero and a brave, chatty heroine set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.
Warlord’s Mercy is the fifth of six core stories in the Chamele Barbarian Warlord series.
Book 1: Warlord Sky
Book 2: Warlord’s Bounty
Book 3: Warlord Unarmed
Book 4: Warlord Reunited
Book 5: Warlord’s Mercy
Book 6: Warlord’s Return
