Holding Hoarse And Ripples
In Holding Hoarse, the ship Hoarse, the hero, is serving on passes by Nereid Negative One. The Captain refuses Relay’s request to land on the planet because it is too dangerous. Truth and Dissent had killed many of the locals during their time there in Testing Truth. The remaining locals are, as a result, extremely hostile toward all cyborgs.
One of the (many) fun things about writing numerous stories set in the same universe is actions in present stories impact future stories. The cyborgs, for example, know about modified humanoids because Mayhem stopped in the Refuge in Chasing Mayhem. Cyborgs share information. If they meet with modified humanoids in the future (it IS a small universe – grins), they will have that history and it will impact that meeting.
I LOVE this. I do write my longer stories so they can be read on their own but these little insights make the stories more fun for me to write and, I think, for dedicated reading buddies to read.

Holding Hoarse And Honoring Teachers
Two of my Awesome Sisters are teachers. I know how challenging this year has been for them. They’ve had to change their teaching plans again and again. They worry about their students getting ill. They worry about them falling behind. They worry that, due to all the other changes, they might not be as present for them as they’d like. They’re doing their best in a trying situation and I honor their actions, their dedication, their commitment.
In the cyborg world, teachers are called experts (because that is what they are). In Holding Hoarse, Arlicia’s best buddy, Zella, is an expert at a small academy.
Zella has her hands full. (grins) She has a diverse class with kids from a variety of species and cultures and she is trying to teach them during the Harvest Celebration. The kids have been eating the equivalent of candy all planet rotation and are super hyper.
I suspect this is what many teachers here on Earth are dealing with right now. The holidays are approaching. Kids are extremely excited about that and they have more energy than usual.
I appreciate all teachers do during ‘normal’ times (whatever normal truly is) but I’m especially grateful for all they’ve done this year. Thank you to everyone in teaching roles (including support staff and parents who are teaching kids from home)!

Holding Hoarse And Doll Making
When I was a kid, my family didn’t have any extra money for toys…so toys were made. Tree branches became swords. Pine cones became balls. Scrap fabric became dolls.
My Awesome Grandma was a skilled rag doll maker. She could craft a doll out of a handful of scraps, fabric salvaged from worn or stained clothing. (She made Barbie clothes for my more affluent cousins and they were tiny works of art.)
My most prized doll was one I called Raggedy Anne. She didn’t at all resemble the Raggedy Ann you’re likely thinking of. I merely called her that so I could tell other kids I had a Raggedy Anne doll.
That wasn’t a lie. It was the truth. Merely not the truth they had assumed.
(grins) I was a problem solver even as a kid.
Raggedy Anne was special because she was knitted, was made of yarn. Yarn was and still is expensive. My Awesome Grandma would carefully take apart sweaters that were past their usage and re-use that yarn for dolls, teddy bears and Barbie clothes.
She crafted a doll for me out of yellow and brown yarn. The doll’s form was yellow. Her eyes, hair, lips, nose, clothing were brown.
Most people would likely think she was hideous. But I loved and still love that fraggin’ doll.
I took care of Raggedy Anne. She never left the house, rarely left whatever I was using as a bed at that time. I tried to clean my hands before touching her. In my eyes, Raggedy Anne was the BEST doll and I wouldn’t have traded her for any other plaything.
When my Awesome Grandma crafted that doll, she, like Hoarse, fabricated love.

Holding Hoarse And Being Worthy Of Love
I believe EVERYONE is worthy of love. (big hugs) We don’t have to change or achieve our definitions of success or do something special to be deserving of caring.
Not everyone BELIEVES they are worthy of love, however. That’s a normal feeling and it is very different from genuinely not being deserving of love.
Hoarse, the C Model hero of Holding Hoarse, doesn’t believe he warrants caring…yet. He is working toward that goal when he meets his female. But that goal is one he has set himself. You and I both know he was already deserving of love during Passion Surge, the previous story. He merely didn’t believe that.
As many of us don’t believe it. That’s natural and okay but it isn’t reality. We DO deserve love.
Many people also aren’t ready for lasting, permanent relationships. They might not be in that emotional space or they might have other goals they are focused on.
This is often the case of the characters in my stories. They are worthy of love (though they might not believe that) but they aren’t yet ready for love. They might get to that point…eventually or (if they’re minor characters) they might be super happy on their own.
You ARE worthy of love, my friend. Don’t ever doubt that. You don’t have to craft perfect dolls, as Hoarse believes, to warrant caring. You already deserve it!

Holding Hoarse And Harvest
In Holding Hoarse, the children are participating in a joyous end of harvest celebration. End of harvest is a common celebration in my stories.
Why?
Because end of harvest is celebrated in almost all cultures, all religions right here on Earth. (Thanksgiving is the primary North American celebration of the harvest.) We all need to eat. Much of our food comes from crops.
Being a former farmgal, I understand how much hard work harvest is and what a relief, what a source of happiness a solid harvest is. Many factors influence crop yields. A good harvest feels like a blessing and is certainly a reason for celebration.
I doubt this would change on other inhabitable planets. Alien species need some sort of energy inputs or nourishment. I suspect much of that would come from plants and, if the planet has seasons/temperature changes, there would likely be an ideal time to harvest those plants.
Then it would be party time. (laughs) It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a being benefiting from a good harvest, would be in want of a celebration.

Holding Hoarse – Friends To Lovers AND Instalove/Fated To Mate
Holding Hoarse, my gift this year to you, is both a friends to lovers romance AND an instalove/fated to mate/love at first sight romance.
How is that possible?
Cyborgs recognize their genetic matches through their voices, their scents, their touch. They usually know within moments that a female (or male or other) is theirs.
Hoarse, however, doesn’t hear Arlicia’s voice, smell her scent, touch her right away. He originally reaches out to her through text communications and interacts with her thousands of times via solely the written word before speaking with her.
During that time, they become friends…of sorts. There’s a fascination, a mutual admiration, an interest between them but it doesn’t become lust until they speak.
Before that first conversation occurs, Hoarse, as a friend does, relays some of his…inadequacies to Arlicia. This complicates the leap from friends to lovers.

Warlord’s Return – The Final Story In The Chamele Barbarian Warlords Series
Some reading buddies have been asking me if there will be more stories in the Chamele Barbarian Warlords Series.
Warlord’s Return IS the final story in the series.
Maybe, far in the distant future, I’ll write a next generation alien and modified humanoid series (I will DEFINITELY be writing a next generation cyborg series). I will never say never because ideas happen. But I have no plans at the moment to write any more stories featuring the Chameles.
Chamele warriors will likely appear as minor characters in other stories. They live in the same universe as the cyborgs and the modified humanoids and other species.
Chameles don’t travel outside their sector very often but a rare few HAVE made homes on other planets and they are always looking for battles. (grins)

The Darkness Of War

On this lockdown Remembrance Day, I thought I’d answer one of the questions I often receive from reading buddies – “Do you have to make your stories so dark and violent?”
I write about warriors and war so yes, I DO have to make my stories violent and dark in tone. I believe to skim over the darkness, to minimize the horror of war, how it impacts warriors and others is to dishonor our Earth-based warriors’ experiences and sacrifices.
War is often unfortunately necessary but it IS brutal. I will never forget the expressions on my Great Uncle Frank’s face when he relived moments of battle (you can read about that experience here – http://tasteofcyn.com/2013/11/11/lest-we-forget/ ). I have read accounts of war that give me nightmares years later. It is horrific.
War changes people forever. It impacts relationships. It touches almost all aspects of a warrior’s life present and future. Just as there is no such thing as an ex-Marine, there is also no such thing as an ex-warrior in any other role. The experience stays with anyone (real or fictional) who has endured it.
Our warriors are making extreme sacrifices to protect us, defend us, keep us safe. I would never want to minimize their service or experiences in any way.

Warlord’s Return And Returning To The Refuge
In Warlord’s Return, we return to the Refuge, the settlement Kralj and Dita (from Dark Thoughts) rule. Oghul (from Dark Warlord) is visiting his brother and his brother’s gerel. The Chameles are looking forward to training with the Modified Humanoids.
Some reading buddies have asked me if we will return to the Refuge again in the future. Will we visit with Kralj and Dita again, spend more time with the flying triplets and the others?
Yes. Definitely yes. (grins)
I don’t have immediate plans for another story set in the Refuge. The next year is all about the Rebel Cyborgs and Power getting his a$$ handed to him. (laughs) Containing Malice, the first story, is explosive.
But we will absolutely be returning to the Refuge in the future. I want to write next generation stories and some of the Modified Humanoids deserve to find their mates.

Warlord’s Return And Spoilers
Warlord’s Return release tomorrow (or tonight if you’ve pre-ordered this story)! Woot! I’m super excited about this release. I can’t wait for you to read this story.
There WILL be spoilers posted. There always are but there especially will be for Warlord’s Return.
This is the last story in the series. Reading buddies…and I (grins) tend to talk about last stories in series more freely. I’m not quite sure why I do this but I do and others do this also.
Things also…happen as they tend to do in my stories. (laughs) There are appearances made by many previously featured couples and characters. A big event happens for one of these couples in the first three chapters of the story. The earlier in the story an event happens, the more likely it is talked about freely. Again, I do this also. It WILL occur.
If you don’t want to see spoilers, pre-order today (you’ll receive the story sooner) and don’t look at reviews. You can spend tomorrow at the Refuge, hanging out with the Chameles and Kralj and Dita and not have to worry about seeing story info you don’t want to see.
