Under Strain And Avialans
Much of the action in Under Strain, the next Rebel Cyborgs story, happens on Rohini 9. I joke that Rohini 9 is the Jurassic Planet. The vegetation and many of the creatures remind me of how I imagine Earth was during that period.
One of the types of creatures on Rohini 9 are the avialans. The most well-known present day avialans on Earth are birds. Rohini 9’s avialans are similar to our birds. They are huge, however, brightly-colored and they sport teeth.
It made sense to me that if the planet had velociraptor-like creatures (the theropods), it would also have bird-like creatures (the avialans). These two creatures on Earth shared the same ancestors. One would evolve to dominate the ground and the other would evolve to dominate the skies.

He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, and told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes place on a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to claim her. Forever.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Under Strain And Emerging From Lockdown
My section of the universe has been on lockdown forever (stay-at-home orders are sometimes sprinkled into the mix to add excitement). It is extremely rare that I interact in-person with anyone other than my super easy going Dear Wonderful Hubby.
Which means my social skills are a bit…rusty. (sheepish grin) They were never admittedly great. I’m an extreme introvert. Now, they’re a hot mess.
Often when I speak to people now, I skip the niceties and get straight to the point. I don’t ask how they are or introduce myself. I just say what I want to say, blurting out unusual questions and observations. (laughs) Yes, I’m a disaster. I’m trying to train myself not to do that.
Kamyelle, the heroine of Under Strain, has been on her own for a very, VERY long time. She hasn’t talked with a human or humanoid…or cyborg for many solar cycles. Her social skills are on par with mine. (grins) When she finally makes contact with others, she says whatever crosses her mind.
This makes her conversations with Strain and other super fun to ‘listen’ to. I smile thinking about them and I think you’ll enjoy them also.

Under Strain And Lifeform Scan Concealing Mud
In Under Strain, the second Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in early May), Kamyelle, the human heroine, conceals herself from lifeform scans by slathering herself with Rohini 9’s unique mud.
A thick coating of mud can reduce our body temperatures here on Earth. Elephants coat themselves with mud to cool themselves and to protect themselves from the sun’s rays.
Mud also contains minerals and other components. On Earth, Mylar foil should block infrared thermal imaging. Heck, simple aluminum foil reduces infrared radiation (which is, I suspect, why some alien enthusiasts wear tinfoil hats).
The lifeform scanners the cyborgs use are much more advanced than mere infrared thermal imaging but it is logical that there WILL be mud somewhere in the universe the scanners can’t penetrate.
One of those places is Rohini 9.

World Health Day And Medics In Space
There are many medics in my stories and there are reasons for that.
It takes a special type of personality to dedicate one’s lifespan to helping and saving others. Most beings in the medical field are heroes and heroines whether they appear in stories or not.
Cyborgs are also warriors and warriors become wounded or damaged as the cyborgs call it. They require beings who can put their big bodies back together. A medic would be a necessary role on any team. They are, speaking in today’s pandemic terms, essential workers.
In the Rebel Cyborgs series, we meet three medics in Containing Malice, the first story alone.
The heroine, Illona, is a human medic forced to perform horrific experiments on Malice, the cyborg hero. She became a medic to heal others. Instead, she has to hurt them.
Medic Febris, Illona’s friend in the Humanoid Alliance laboratory, is in a similar situation. She is assigned to the terrifying resurrection experiment.
Both Febris and Illona are being experimented on themselves and, being medics, they know what is happening to their bodies and what their fates might be.
The cyborgs have their own versions of medics. We meet Patch, the cyborg retrieval team’s medic, in Containing Malice. He is savvy with repairing cyborgs. The J Model has less experience with healing humans and humanoids and he is willing and eager to learn from Illona.
I’m working on the second draft of Baring Grudge, the third story in the Rebel Cyborgs series, this week and there is a medic minor character in that story also.
Today, I am thinking of all the humans, humanoids and cyborgs (grins), real or literary, in the medical field. (big hugs) I’m grateful for your service.

Cyborgs, Spring And Babies
It is spring in my corner of the universe, a season I always associate with babies – baby plants, baby animals, babies of all kinds. There is a robin nest outside my window and I’m hoping I’ll see some babies soon.
Cyborgs become as excited about babies.
Before Rage met Joan in Releasing Rage, cyborgs didn’t think they could reproduce on their own. They were manufactured in massive vats by the Humanoid Alliance scientists. The breeding programs were unsuccessful.
Rage and Joan proved baby cyborgs WERE possible between a warrior and the being (or, in rare cases, beings) he is genetically compatible with.
Babies are still rare, however. Very few (as a percentage of all cyborgs) warriors have found their compatible beings and reproduction once they find him/her happens sporadically.
This is likely a good thing. Cyborgs and their genetic matches have the ability to live forever. They also don’t age, which means they can potentially make babies for the same duration – for all eternity.
Quick reproduction would result in the universe being overrun with cyborgs. I’d be okay with that but other beings might object.
Cyborg couples (or more) can take their time, get to know each other, practice breeding (grins) before expanding their families. Every offspring is cherished, treasured and protected by all the warriors… (looks at Choice) whether they want that often excessive safeguarding or not.

Female Cyborgs And The Rebel Cyborg Series
I’ve received quite a few awesome queries from reading buddies about the other female cyborgs, cyborgs like Sky from Releasing Rage, the first cyborg romance I published.
I haven’t forgotten about them! (grins) I promise! I also haven’t forgotten about many of the other cyborg warriors I’ve mentioned in previous stories. They merely haven’t found their genetic matches yet. It IS a huge universe.
I’m trying not to share spoilers. This is challenging for me. I want to tell you EVERYTHING I know. If I do that outside of their own stories, the cyborgs will stop talking to me. We don’t want that to happen.
I WILL share that, knowing Sky, she will likely make a brief appearance in the Rebel Cyborg series. Cadet IS a new female cyborg. Sky will be curious about Cadet and Cadet must be curious about Sky.
Will they get along? Well…THAT I don’t know. Not yet.

Hawks And Squirrels
A gorgeous red-tailed hawk has made our neighborhood his home. Yesterday, he was circling in the beautiful blue sky, looking for prey.
The Mafia Squirrels were frantic. They scurried to hide from the hawk and the cover they sought was inside our house. They were knocking on the windows and on the back deck’s sliding doors, chattering loudly for us to let them in. Their eyes were wide with fear and I wanted to open the doors… except I knew it would be almost impossible to get the squirrels out of the house once the danger had passed.
Thankfully, all the Mafia Squirrels in our backyard survived.
But it made me think about how they viewed us, the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I, as allies in that instant. Normally, the Mafia Squirrels view us as encroachers onto turf they believe belongs to them. Yesterday, we were seen as a means of potential assistance.
Malice, the hero in Containing Malice, is in a similar situation. He views Illona, the human heroine, as his enemy but she might, just might become his greatest ally.

Cyborgs And the Seasons
It is Spring in my corner of the universe. Spring is one of my favorite seasons. Animals are having babies. The snow has melted, creating little streams of running water everywhere. (My home isn’t close to running water normally so this is a treat for me.) Tender shoots of grass and flowers are bursting from the ground. The birds sing happily every morning. It is a wonderful time to be alive.
In the depths of space, there aren’t, of course, any seasons. But on most of the planets the cyborgs and other warriors visit, there ARE seasons. We merely don’t see them change during the duration of a story.
In Holding Hoarse, locals were celebrating the harvest, which implies there’s a Fall/Autumn or Harvest season. Containing Malice was set during a barren, snowless Winter. The rock outcropping sporting the laboratory is stark and unwelcoming. Under Strain, the May release, is set during a rain forest-like Summer. The vegetation is lush. The ground is wet.
Cyborgs are manufactured to adapt to different conditions and they thrive in all seasons. I suspect they would enjoy the Spring here on Earth as much as I do. (smiles)

Extras And Newsletter Snippets
On non-release months (like this month – grins), I often share updates on existing couples (or more) or backstory on upcoming characters (this month, that backstory snippet was about Power, Lethe and Eirene Ours) in my newsletters.
It is fun to revisit with characters and to ‘see’ scenes that are unlikely to make it into the stories.

Containing Malice
This tormented cyborg craves vengeance…and her.

Malice, a C Model cyborg, has spent his long lifespan enslaved by the Humanoid Alliance. His cruel manufacturers have hurt him in all the ways a male could be hurt.
His enemy has now added a new weapon to their arsenal—a tiny human medic with soft hands and a delectable scent. She experiments on him multiple times a shift, delivering pain…and frustration.
He wants her. He also seeks retribution.
Once Malice frees himself, he plans to achieve both of his goals, taking Medic Illona captive and ending her research…permanently.
Illona is as much a prisoner as the cyborgs she experiments on. Since her arrival at the Human Alliance’s secret laboratory, she has carefully, stealthily, crafted a plot to free her test subjects. To conceal her covert activities, the medic has been forced to harm beings rather than heal them.
The being she has damaged the most is also the cyborg she fiercely desires— Malice, a huge, gray-skinned, blue-eyed C Model with massive hands and a voice deeper than space. He hates her, has good reason to do so, and, when he’s freed, there’s a high probability he’ll kill her.
Illona will take that risk to ensure he survives.

Visiting With Past Characters
One of the (many) things I love about writing in the same world is, from time to time, we can visit with characters we’ve met in previous stories. This will happen often in the Rebel Cyborgs series.
The entire cyborg retrieval team made some appearances in the Cyborg Space Exploration series. Although at the time, we didn’t realize who they were or what their names were.
Ghost and Lethe, one of my favorite couples, make a brief appearance in Containing Malice. Their story was Ghost Of A Machine in the Cyborg Sizzle series. This couple will be referred to often due to their relationship with and influence on Cadet.
Power, the arrogant E Model hero of the fifth and final Rebel Cyborgs story, has made appearances throughout both previous series. His story will definitely feature some past couples.
Baring Grudge, which I’m writing at the moment, will include some characters from Chasing Mayhem. This third story in the Rebel Cyborgs series will be explosive. (grins)
Do you need to read these other stories to enjoy Rebel Cyborgs? No, not at all. The stories in Rebel Cyborgs can be read on their own. But I’m hoping these cameos will make some series reading buddies smile.
