Warlord’s Return And Kralj’s Protection

By Cynthia Sax on October 27, 2020

Xareni, the heroine of Warlord’s Return (releasing next week!), owes Kralj, the Ruler of the Refuge (and hero of Dark Thoughts) her life.

When she was a child, the all knowing, all powerful modified humanoid not only saved her from almost certain death but he extended his protection to her while she healed and he gave her a reason to live.

If you’ve read Dark Thoughts, you know that Kralj has a very live-and-let-live, hands-off approach to beings in his settlement. He doesn’t extend his protection to many beings.

That he extended it to Xareni is significant.

She might be human but Kralj very much views her as one of the modified humanoids…which is one of the greatest compliments the Ruler would give a being. He trusts her as much as he trusts Orol or Balvan, his warriors. And he considers his request of her—to guide Ariq and the other Chameles to the clone settlement—to be both an honor AND a gift.

Kralj loves her. She is part of his unusual family.

Although he would never admit to that. (grins)

Warlord’s Return And Mini Dragons

By Cynthia Sax on October 16, 2020

Xareni, the heroine of Warlord’s Return, is a loner. She doesn’t like spending time with other beings, avoids settlements and crowds of any kinds.

She DOES, however, have a companion – Spark, a drakon, a mini-dragon with an attitude as defined as hers. Xareni loves Spark and Spark loves Xareni…in his own irritable way.

Spark’s official role is her hunting partner as shown in this snippet…

***

A human male wearing ragged remnants of a Humanoid Alliance uniform waited by a path utilized by the clones. He was hidden by a huge boulder.

Spark had spotted him easily. The little drakon now circled high above the male’s head. The creature’s wings were spread wide as he glided on the breeze. The rays of Carinae E’s single sun reflected off his green scales.

She had found Spark in one of the markets. He had breathed fire at every being who passed his stone cage, had bitten the merchant trying to sell him, taking a huge chunk out of one of his thumbs. The drakon was almost as surly as she was.

Xareni had to buy him, spending some of the precious credits she’d earned from escorting idiots around the planet. She had set him free. Spark refused to leave her.

Now, they were a team. He was her eyes from the sky, and she helped him down prey he was too small to kill.

At the moment, their prey was the Humanoid Alliance male.

***

Spark is very much part of Xareni’s family. I sometimes joke that Warlord’s Return is a romance between Ariq, Xareni AND Spark because Ariq will have to win BOTH of them over to secure Xareni’s allegiance.

It is a good thing the Chamele warrior loves challenges. (grins)

Warlord’s Return And The Winged Triplets

By Cynthia Sax on October 14, 2020

Part of the fun for me, when writing Warlord’s Return, was catching up with Kralj, Dita, and the rest of the modified humanoids and their mates in the Refuge

That included Jeden, Vietor and Dialo, Orol and Rhea’s sons (Orol and Rhea’s story is Dark Flight). The winged triplets are physically mature and they are causing SO much trouble. (grins) I love them so much.

Here is a snippet featuring them…

***

“We haven’t gotten stuck in a cave in…” Jeden looked at his brothers. “Has it been eleven planet rotations since you got stuck in that cave on the west side?”

“I wasn’t stuck.” Vietor’s face darkened.

“Dad had to claw away a section of the rock.” Dialo elbowed his brother.

“I merely couldn’t move.” Vietor said that as though there was a difference between the two situations. “It happens.”

“I hope it doesn’t happen often.” Xareni shook her head.

The young males chattered about deadly creatures they’d encountered or had heard about or, in the case of the flying bovine with projectile-shooting horns, she suspected, had imagined.

Arms were punched. Backs were slapped.

It was too much…activity for Xareni. Seeking space and quiet, she drifted away from the youths.

Ariq, carrying Spark, moved with her. “If you’re concerned about them, I have claws.” Her barbarian extended and then retracted his natural weapons. “I can free him…or them.” He glanced back at the males. “We have to assume all three of them have gotten stuck in caves in the past.”

That was a valid assumption. The triplets were flying disasters.

***

(grins) They add some excitement to an already exciting adventure. Yes, they ARE flying disasters. And I absolutely adore them.

I can’t wait to write the next generation stories, both featuring the modified humanoids’ children and the cyborgs’ offspring.

Warlord’s Return And Kralj

By Cynthia Sax on October 13, 2020

In Warlord’s Return, the Chameles return to Carinae E and the Refuge, home to Kralj and Dita from Dark Thoughts. Kralj and Dita play important roles in this story.

Ariq first met Kralj and Dita in Dark Cure. We didn’t ‘hear’ his impressions of Kralj in that story but we do hear them in Warlord’s Return.

Here is a snippet of a scene from Chapter One

***

A shadowed face appeared on the main viewscreen. He straightened. That darkened countenance belonged to Kralj, the Ruler of the Refuge.

A surge of energy flowed over Ariq. It lifted the small hairs on his arms, caused his skin to tingle.

The all-powerful, all-knowing modified humanoid was one of the scariest beings he had ever encountered. His unique abilities extended through the communication lines.

***

Xareni, Warlord’s Return, has a deeper, more complex relationships with Kralj. She has known the Ruler since she was a young girl, long before Dark Thoughts.

The nature of their relationship is hinted at in this scene from Chapter Two

***

Kralj, the Ruler of the Refuge, Carinae E’s largest settlement, had given her an order.

Not being an idiot, she’d obey it. Kralj was all-knowing, all-powerful, could kill beings with his mind alone yet preferred to rip them apart and devour their flesh.

No one with a functioning brain disrespected the Ruler.

And she owed him…everything. She touched the hilts of her blades. Whatever he asked, she did.

Someday it might be enough to offset her debt to him.

***

If you met Kralj in Dark Thoughts, you will receive an update on him and on Dita and more details about his past. If you haven’t yet met Kralj…brace yourself for an experience. (grins)

Warlord’s Return And Family

By Cynthia Sax on October 9, 2020

Warlord’s Return, like Testing Truth, is, I believe, a perfectly timed release. I didn’t plan it that way. (laughs) I’m not that organized. But November and December are often a time for families, biological or found, and Warlord’s Return is definitely about families.

Oghul, Khan’s Second, is returning with his gerel to the Refuge on Carinae E to visit with his family, his brother and his gerel. He is taking Ariq and the rest of his team, his brothers-in-arms, his found family with him.

Lysagh, the bounty hunter-in-training we first met in Warlord’s Bounty, is searching for a place where she will fit. She thinks she’s looking for a mentor. I suspect she’s truly looking for a family. Xareni, the heroine of Warlord’s Return, is a bit of a loner and, at first glance, she seems to be someone who doesn’t need friends or family. But she would kill for Spark, her mini dragon hunting partner. She loves the grumpy little creature. Spark is HER family.

Warlord’s Return – A Bonus Story

By Cynthia Sax on October 6, 2020

Some reading buddies have asked me why I didn’t end the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series after Warlord’s Mercy. That story answers almost all of the questions raised during the series. What more is there to tell?

Lysagh’s story DOES need a happier for-now ending. Her story is one that hadn’t been completely told. This young bounty-hunter-in-training is still looking for her place in the universe. Her gut tells her it isn’t with the bounty hunters. There’s so much anger in her and she wants vengeance.

Ariq, Oghul’s best warrior and the hero of Warlord’s Return, also needed some resolution. He is struggling with peace, as many warriors here on Earth do.

Just because the wars for a species or nation end doesn’t mean the wars for those involved have ended.

Ariq has adapted to battle, is genetically-disposed to battle, has spent most of his lifespan honing those skills. Now they’re not needed.

And he’s lost. He doesn’t know where he fits anymore. I wanted to tell that story, to see him receive his happy ending.

But I DO view Warlord’s Return as a bonus story, a story I wrote mostly for myself and thought you’d enjoy. (grins) It is a reason to go back to the Refuge, the home of Kralj and Dita from Dark Thoughts. I hung out with Oghul and his crew and received updates on the modified humanoids.

The Refuge series and the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series are closely connected.

It felt right to return to Carinae E. It felt like returning home.

And I really needed that right now. I thought you might need it too.

(big hugs)

Testing Truth And Breaking The Series Into Subseries

By Cynthia Sax on October 3, 2020

A reading buddy (big hugs) asked me, “Why did you break the cyborg series into smaller series? Why didn’t you keep it as one long series?”

Cyborg Space Exploration was broken into a subseries because I felt it had a different feel to it. The Cyborg Sizzle subseries was all about the cyborgs escaping the Humanoid Alliance and venturing to their Homeland. Cyborg Space Exploration is about…well…space exploration. (laughs) I know. I’m not very creative when it comes to titles or series names.

Cyborg Space Exploration is more Star Trek than Star Wars. And we all know fans of Star Trek aren’t necessarily fans of Star Wars. (Though I am fans of both worlds. I LOVE them for very different reasons.)

I also wanted reading buddies to be able to start and stop the longer series and creating subseries are my suggestions of when they could best do that.

Sure, reading buddies of solely the Cyborg Space Exploration subseries won’t know the full impact of how the cyborgs fought to escape the Humanoid Alliance (in the Cyborg Sizzle subseries) and they won’t know how the Cyborg Council deals with the Rebel Cyborgs (in the upcoming Rebel Cyborgs subseries) but they will know the core stories of the crew of the Reckless.

That gives those reading buddies a bit of closure.

The upcoming Cyborg Rebels subseries won’t (hopefully) be the final subseries. I have three more subseries planned thus far, including the Next Generation Cyborgs subseries. (grins) I know many reading buddies are waiting for those stories.

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

***

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Testing Truth And Baddies

By Cynthia Sax on October 2, 2020

In fairy tales (which I LOVE), the good beings are often clearly good and the bad beings are often clearly bad. The Princess never harms good beings and the Wicked Witch never helps good beings. Their roles are clear. We usually know which characters to cheer for.

The stories in the cyborg series, including Testing Truth, aren’t fairy tales. (grins) Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth, might be a Princess but she harms some good beings (Were the Rebels in the beverage outlet good? They are fighting for the ‘good’ side.). Truth, our cyborg hero, loves to kill beings and he’s not too fussy about who he kills.

The Humanoid Alliance are the big baddies in the series yet many of the heroines were once aligned (sometimes unwillingly, sometimes out of lack of knowledge) with the Humanoid Alliance. Joan, the heroine of Releasing Rage, worked for them as an engineer.

There are random minor characters who are aligned with the Humanoid Alliance and do the right thing also—looking the other way when beings escape, refusing to fight for them, walking away from situations they don’t fully support.

No one is all good. No one is all bad.

(grins) Beings are complicated.

Testing Truth And Found Families

By Cynthia Sax on September 30, 2020

Princess Nancy, the heroine of Testing Truth, is surrounded by family.

She has her biological family. Her parents are the Queen and the King and her two brothers are the Crown Prince and the Prince. Her arrangement with her biological family is very business-like and extremely cold. She is not seen as a daughter or a sister but as the Spare to the Heir. There are no hugs or kisses, no ‘I love you’s, very few smiles and little warmth.

There’s a reason for that. The Queen feels she must always put her Kingdom first. That might mean sacrificing one of her children. That’s easier to do if she isn’t emotionally attached to them.

Thankfully, Princess Nancy also has a found family. The relationship between her Royal Dresser, her Private Secretary and her Private Guard might seem like duty-driven roles. But Marthe, Valentin, and Claude view her as their own daughter. They would kill for her, die for her. They and their love are always nearby.

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I think of my reading and writing buddies as part of our found family also. (group hugs) Like Princess Nancy with her entourage, I suspect I’m not supposed to care as much as I do about you…yet I do. Some of you have been with me for years and I love that. I love you.

Testing Truth And Dressing Like A Princess

By Cynthia Sax on September 29, 2020

Often, the heroines in my stories dress in flight suits and other super practical garments. They’re medics and warriors and engineers. The females are active (especially after meeting their cyborgs, modified humanoids or aliens – grins) and they get dirty (in all sorts of ways).

It was a treat to record Princess Nancy’s story, to describe her dressed in her big poufy ball gowns and her glittering tiaras. Her dresses and assorted accessories are brightly colored and sparkly and extremely impractical. But they are expected for her. She is Royaume Royalty and has to play the part. The garments do what they are designed to do—attract attention, impress, signal that a Princess isn’t like a normal female.

Of course, Nancy also has more practical garments. Her ship is designed for her big ball gowns but she can’t sweep into a Rebel beverage outlet filled with rough, tough warriors in a huge, dazzling dress. She has flight suit-type garments for the occasions when she doesn’t want to attract attention, when she has to run and kick and fight.

She IS a heroine and heroines tend to be extremely active. (grins)
