Wars In Space
My cyborg romances and alien romances are set during times of war. The Humanoid Alliance is seeking to expand their empire, are taking over previously independent planets. These baddies fortunately suffered a setback when the cyborgs, their primary weapons of war, mass rebelled but they are quickly recovering from those losses.
You will see similarities between these space battles and battles here on Earth. War tactics and techniques evolve. If something works well in a previous conflict, we, humans, tend to use it again.
The wars in space are no different. They are based on past wars on Earth, what worked and what didn’t work.
The spaceship battles, for example, are based on navy ship battles. There are differences, of course, because hey, they’re fighting in space and in the future and different participants are involved, but some of the tactics work just as well in space as they do on water.
One thing remains constant, however – war is terrible. It is needed, unfortunately, but there are never any true winners in war. Harsh prices are paid on both sides of the conflict.
I wish for peace, both in space and here on Earth.

The Power Of The Sphere
Spheres appear often in ancient cultures.

The bones, which were cleansed and painted with red ochre, were placed in these sites a good while after the deaths of the individuals, suggesting that time and effort were dedicated to this practice.
The Ciboney also made stone spheres to deposit next to the bones as funerary offerings.”

Under Strain
A damaged cyborg warrior is hunted by a peace-loving human female.

Strain is severely malfunctioning. The D Model cyborg was the sole survivor after a horrific decision was made by his cruel manufacturers. He hates all humans, and when he attacks one who is under his cyborg leader’s protection, he is reprimanded, stripped of his weapons, and told to watch and not actively participate in the next mission.
That mission takes place on a small remote planet. Its lush terrain should only be inhabited by the cyborgs they were sent to rescue, but Strain senses another presence on the surface. She is watching him, tracking him, hunting him.
A fully operational cyborg would end her lifespan.
Strain wants to claim her. Forever.
Kamyelle is the only one left of her kind. Warriors have killed the other nonviolent human inhabitants of her planet. She survived…barely…by hiding in the trees, observing her enemies, and covering herself with lifeform scan-concealing mud.
When a handsome, gray-skinned, brilliant-blue-eyed male arrives, surrounded by weapon-carrying warriors, she has to save him. Warriors harm and they kill. That is what they do.
She won’t allow them to hurt Strain.

Cyborgs, The Future And Diversity
There has been a lot of talk in Romancelandia about diversity of characters.
Most of my stories feature the M/F relationship construct. I love writing those stories. As many of my writing buddies are happily writing M/M. M/M/M/F, F/F and other relationships constructs, I don’t feel a driving need to write them. I simply read their stories. (grins)
The cyborg world IS diverse, however. There are all sorts of relationship constructs in existence all around my characters. There are human and humanoid males on Mercury Minor waiting to meet their male cyborg warriors. There are human and humanoid females waiting to meet their multiple male cyborg warriors. There are multigender and fluid gender and other beings also waiting.
When it comes to race and culture, well…the cyborg world encompasses the entire universe. There are blue beings from low technology civilizations and multicolor beings from advanced technology civilizations. The humans and humanoids and other beings in the universe are extremely varied. I think that is part of the fun of writing cyborg and alien romance.

The Future Of Humans
Recently, a reading buddy asked me, “Why do you think humans in the future will be the same as we are now? We could be better as a species.”
I LOVE these discussions. When some of my SciFi Romance buddies and I hang out virtually, these are the types of topics we talk about. I adore this sh*t, could happily talk about it forever.
We COULD be better as a species. Especially if we encounter an extinction-threatening event that forces us to either change or perish. That is absolutely possible.
But it is unlikely we’ll change much as a species in, say, a thousand years.
Physically, our changes will be minimal. We are very much the same today as we were in 1021. Humans evolve slowly. Researchers believe it would take about a million years or more to see a significant change. That’s because we reproduce slowly (the average first time mom in the US is 26 years old). And we’re mobile, have a wide selection of possible partners.
That means our brains are unlikely to change significantly. Some of our behaviors (like fight or flight) are hard-coded. We have basic urges (like the need to reproduce or survive). Unless our brains are altered, those will remain.
And that will drive behavior. Our technology might evolve but we will likely continue collecting resources, continue huddling together in the safety of groups. We will likely fight when faced with threats perceived or real.
As a species, significant change might be challenging. But as individuals, I believe we have the opportunity to be better, kinder, more generous, more loving humans. We can make Earth and the universe a more wonderful place..

Cyborgs And The Fallen
Note: This post has nothing to do with Testing Truth, my upcoming cyborg romance release. It DOES have everything to do with current events.
Often, reading buddies will send me messages after ‘good’ warriors in my stories die. They are understandably upset and they sometimes ask me why the death was necessary. They would prefer that no ‘good’ warriors die in my stories.
I would prefer that too—in my stories and in real life. But the nature of battle, of being a warrior, is to face death every day. Sometimes, warriors conquer death that day. Sometimes, unfortunately, death wins. That death could be their own or, more likely, it could be the death of a brethren, a friend, or someone they knew well.
I’ve completed years of research for my stories (I started these studies well before I published my first cyborg romance), had the honor of meeting and speaking with thousands of Earth-based warriors. Every warrior I’ve met has grieved the loss of a fellow warrior.
I feel to not show that in my stories is to dishonor the sacrifices made, the sacrifices being made. It isn’t capturing the true essence of being a warrior and the trauma they endure.
They know when they step onto a battlefield, they or someone they know might die. They have to deal with that and with grief every dang day. It is part of them.
Which is why I’m so fraggin’ sad at the moment. I’m sad that not everyone realizes the sacrifices warriors make. I’m sad that they don’t understand the bravery and strength required from these women and men. I’m sad that they don’t honor and respect the fallen.
To warp a saying from The Mandalorian, that isn’t the cyborg way.
And that isn’t my way. Know that I respect these sacrifices. I value them. They and the fallen will never be forgotten.

Testing Truth
A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.
When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.
That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.
Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.
But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.
If they survive their current mission.
Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Meteor Showers And Inspiration
The Perseid meteor shower is happening right now (the peak days for North America are Tuesday and Wednesday this week). Earth is passing through the debris left by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.
I LOVE meteor showers. The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I once flew through one and it looked like one of those scenes in Star Wars when the Millennium Falcon travels through hyperspace. It was one of the (many) highlights of my life and I will never forget it.
This week, we will definitely be dousing ourselves with bug spray (the mosquitoes have been fierce this year), grabbing a comfy blanket and spending some romantic dates outside in the dark. (grins)
I suspect the writing will be super inspired this week!

Leather – The Universe’s Default Material
A reading buddy commented on how many of my warriors wear leather. Aren’t there other materials in the universe to craft garments from?
That’s a great question…and one that I’ve put quite a bit of thought into (as I put thought into every other small detail, which is why it takes me so fraggin’ long to write a story – grins).
What is leather?
According to Dictionary.com , leather is “the skin of an animal, with the hair removed, prepared for use by tanning or a similar process designed to preserve it against decay and make it pliable or supple when dry.”
The animal doesn’t have to be Earth-based. The animal doesn’t have to look like a cow. A rat is an animal. Rats tend to be everywhere and I suspect they have been making other planets their home also.
As long as a human or humanoid is on the planet, beings can obtain leather.
Because humans and humanoids are animals too.
Yes. That is unnerving but it IS possible and it is likely. Which is why I rarely say what type of leather was used for the garments (that and this detail isn’t usually important to the story).
Any being anywhere has access to leather.
If the being has access to better materials for garments, of course, they will use those other materials. The cyborgs don’t wear leather because they have access to body armor made from stronger, more protective, synthetically created materials.
The princess heroine in Testing Truth doesn’t wear leather because she is a princess, has a gazillion credits and can source the best and often the most beautiful materials in the universe.
The Humanoid Alliance baddies don’t wear leather either. Again, like the cyborgs, they have access to different materials, materials they deem as being ‘better.’
The Chameles, however, are an insular species. They don’t trade with other planets. They rarely allow ships from other sectors into their sector.
They would source almost everything from their own planets and they have plenty of leather on those planets. The Chameles can create leather from the unees, the rock vultures, other animals. And they wouldn’t waste that material.
Plus they revel in their rather primitive origins. Leather has been part of their history, part of their warrior culture for many generations and it suits them. It holds emotional significance for them, is a link to their past.
Many of the beings on Carinae E wear leather also. Carinae E, the home of Kralj from Dark Thoughts, isn’t rich in natural materials. They don’t have teams of scientists to create synthetic alternatives.
The locals don’t trade much with the rest of the universe. Beings avoid Carinae E if they possibly can. It is a wild, lawless, brutal place. No merchants are making pleasure stops there…unless they want to be robbed.
But Carinae E DOES have animals. Many of those animals walk on two legs. So the locals DO have access to leather.
I see you grimacing but did you truly believe Kralj, a male who EATS his enemies, wears a coat made from ethically-sourced bovine leather?
Yes, my less credit-heavy, outlaw warriors tend to wear leather.
The question you might (or might not) wish to ask is—what TYPE of leather are they wearing?

Passion Surge – Weilai’s Sleeping Support
When I saw this bassinet (designed by 4moms) at the CES, I thought of Passion Surge and the sleeping support Surge and his brethren crafted for Weilai, the newest addition to their crew.
This 4moms bassinet has five motions (car ride, wave, kangaroo, tree swing and rock-a-bye), five speeds and four white noises (rain, ocean, fan and a shush). It was an honoree in the CES Innovation Awards.
As per their sign, “4moms has made the ‘4th trimester’ transition from womb to bassinet easier with the introduction of its proprietary motion during sleeping periods. Constant motion is familiar and comforting to newborns, which helps them not only to fall asleep, but also stay asleep longer – giving you and your baby the sleep you both need.”
