Why Are Cyborgs Physically ‘Perfect’?

By Cynthia Sax on September 18, 2024

I’ve received some feedback from reading buddies concerned that all of the cyborgs I’ve featured are what today’s society deems to be physically ‘perfect’ (other than scars or missing limbs or other battle wounds).

Where are the fuller figured cyborgs?

They’ve been decommissioned. That’s what happened to them.

Any cyborg not adhering to the Humanoid Alliance’s rigid standard of perfection was killed.

That need to be perfect is something EVERY cyborg still worries about. It is part of their trauma.

Cyborgs were also manufactured to be ideal warriors. That means if an aspect of them didn’t serve that purpose, it was eliminated.

And they were designed to use every bit of nourishment they received. They have ‘perfect’ metabolisms. That attribute reduced the resources and credits the Humanoid Alliance had to provide to keep them functional.

She’s also a liar and a thief. And she might be working with the enemy.

Trusting her could kill him and everyone he cares about.

Liar. Thief. Seductress. Saboteur. Roshini has been called all of those things. And she has earned each label. She’s done some terrible things to safeguard the beings she loves.

A gray-eyed cyborg warrior with nimble hands and a shared need for speed won’t stop her high-risk activities.

She’ll sacrifice everything, including her lifespan, to complete her self-appointed top-secret assignment.

Life Continues

By Cynthia Sax on April 27, 2024

One of the many things I love about the cyborg world is…

Lives continue after stories end.

Kesser and Strike from Strike Zone are managing negotiations between planets and working toward keeping their new home sector as peaceful as possible.

Rage and Joan from Releasing Rage are dealing with an emptier nest right now as Choice has moved away from home. Heart, their youngest, won’t be at home much longer also. And yes, Rage and Joan is dealing with their newfound privacy in extremely sexy ways. (grins)

Vapor and Mira from Breathing Vapor are enjoying the exact opposite situation. They seem to add to their adopted family every second planet rotation. And they’ve recruited some more cyborgs to help them.

The universe goes on for every past hero and heroine. And, if we’re ever lonely, all we have to do is check in on them.

Strike Zone

A cyborg devoted to duty…and to her.

***

While attending a party, Kesser, the daughter of her planet’s leader, witnesses the abduction of her best friend and her best friend’s mate.

She’s determined to rescue them. Preferably without fracturing the fragile peace agreement her mom has crafted with the abductors’ planet.

The only issue is…she has never participated in a retrieval mission.

Searching for assistance, she approaches the mate’s guard. The male, with his big broad shoulders and deep growly voice, affects her like no other being ever has.

Kesser wants him. She trusts him. And she requires his stealth combat skills.

Desperately.

Strike is no guard. The D Model cyborg has been sent to the sector to discreetly investigate a potential planet-destroying situation.

When a curvy human female with big brown eyes requests his help with a rescue, he doesn’t hesitate to say yes. She’s his genetic match, the one being he was manufactured to protect.

She’s also traveling to the next planet he has to search. He plans to claim his female while he fulfills his responsibilities to his kind.

Neither Strike nor Kesser realizes the dangers facing them are far greater than they imagine. Their enemies are converging, and one failed mission could doom the entire universe.

Strike Zone And A Mission Bigger Than One Being Can Handle

By Cynthia Sax on March 1, 2024

Both Strike and Kesser are given dangerous missions to complete in Strike Zone. They originally take on these missions on their own.

They quickly realize that both of their missions are bigger than one being can handle.

This happens to me also. And I usually realize that if I try to tackle the big mission by myself, I’m sure to fail and that’s not good for anyone.

So I either built a team that can handle the mission or I delegate the mission to someone or some team that CAN tackle it. I try to put the mission first, as good leaders do. (grins)

Strike Zone And A Cyborg’s Hearing Range

By Cynthia Sax on February 9, 2024

In Strike Zone, the cyborgs on board the Dauntless hear a strange sound. The humans on board the battle station don’t hear that sound because its frequency is outside a human’s hearing range.

Humans, on average, can hear frequencies between 64 and 23,000 Hz.

A dog, on average, can hear frequencies between 67 and 45,000 Hz.

A cat, on average, can hear frequencies between 45 and 64,000 Hz.

Cyborgs are half machine. They can hear any frequencies our machines can measure.

Does that include ALL frequencies? Perhaps not. But it is a huge range.

Grin And Bare Him And The Definition Of Normal

By Cynthia Sax on November 9, 2022

Humans are pack animals. Most humans like to fit into groups. They like to be ‘normal.’

The definition of normal changes with each group of people.

In Canada, for example, it is normal to apologize when others are upset even if we did nothing wrong.

In New York City, in contrast, locals will look at you as though you’re an alien (or a Canadian, which is pretty much the same thing – grins) if you apologize for something you had no influence over. It isn’t normal to apologize for everything in New York City.

This shifting view of what is normal can be challenging to navigate.

For cyborgs, the definition of normal is more concise. They were manufactured to meet certain specs. That is ‘normal’ for them.

A normal cyborg, for example, is a skilled warrior. That was their primary purpose, was why they were manufactured. Any cyborg who refused to fight or who fought poorly risked being decommissioned or killed by the Humanoid Alliance.

Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing soon!), processes he’s not normal. He’s aware he isn’t the cyborg everyone expects him to be.

And that ‘everyone’ includes the sexy female trying to steal his ship.

Grin And Bare Him

This cyborg will be the warrior his female requires.

Cyborgs are designed to fight. That is their primary purpose and 98.2356 percent of the manufactured warriors enjoy battle. Tremendously.

Grin, a K model, is one of the rare exceptions. When he escaped his cruel creators, he set down his sword and allocated his processors to less violent pursuits. He projects he’s left his war-waging planet rotations behind him forever.

Then he meets his beautiful, beguiling female, the one being he’s destined to protect, to claim, to love for all eternity, and his plans for peace are completely decimated.

Mohini needs a ship.

She has a dangerous mission to complete and the first step in that assignment is arranging transport to an enemy-controlled planet. The vessel she has set her sights on is guarded by the sexiest cyborg she’s ever seen.

To gain access to his ship, Mohini is prepared to kiss, caress, seduce the muscular male. The mission is her focus. The pleasure she experiences will merely be a bonus.

A female has to do what a female has to do to save the universe.

Grin And Bare Him is a Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.
It features a humanoid female undertaking a dangerous mission, a cyborg intent on keeping her alive, and an enemy with enough firepower to blow up an entire sector.

Why Cyborgs Often Have Human Females

By Cynthia Sax on August 27, 2021

An often repeated bit of advice given to SciFi Romance writers is the average reader tends to prefer human heroines in their M/F stories. The average reader is cool with heroes being cyborgs or aliens but they prefer the heroine to be human.

That’s not why many of my cyborg romances feature human heroines. It SHOULD be why. (sheepish grin) But it isn’t.

The reason is…genetics.

Cyborgs are half human. It is logical that the majority of their matches would be found within that species. Humans are closest to them genetically.

If we adhere to the common ancestor theory (which I do), humanoids and humans share a common ancestor and are linked genetically. That is why they can have viable offspring.

So it makes sense to me that some matches would be humanoids, especially humanoids that physically resemble humans. Cyborg-humanoid alliances would happen less frequently than cyborg-human bonds as they are further apart genetically.

Non-humanoid matches are unlikely. And producing viable offspring from that match has an even lower probability of happening. That probability isn’t zero, however. It COULD happen. I merely haven’t witnessed it yet.

Baring Grudge

No one in the universe is more determined than a cyborg warrior tracking his female.

***

Grudge, a C Model cyborg, has been assigned a mission – safeguard a Humanoid Alliance space station for his kind. Honor was once all he had, and he is determined to fulfill his duty.

That resolve is tested when a tiny human female enters the space station and sets the prettiest little explosives the warrior has ever seen. She is Grudge’s genetic match, the one being manufactured for him. He wants to touch her, kiss her, claim her in all ways, but first he has to stop her from blasting him into the next galaxy.

Taelyn has a self-appointed mission—to destroy every battle robot the Humanoid Alliance has ever manufactured. A huge gray-skinned, blue-eyed cyborg warrior with mismatched arms won’t prevent her from achieving her goal. She’ll escape him, leaving destruction in her wake.

Before she departs, she’ll experience one toe-curling moment of hatred-edged passion with her handsome foe. She’ll show him how skilled with detonations she truly is. He will have his universe rocked.

Then she’ll disappear.

Her cyborg, however, has no intention of ever letting her go.

***

Baring Grudge is a STANDALONE Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.

It features a determined, damaged warrior, an equally resolute human female, and an explosive game of predator and prey played across galaxies.

Baring Grudge is the third of five core stories in the Rebel Cyborgs Series.
Book 1: Containing Malice
Book 2: Under Strain
Book 3: Baring Grudge

Will Cyborgs Ever Learn To Lie?

By Cynthia Sax on September 25, 2020

While cyborgs were under the Humanoid Alliance’s cruel control, their knowledge of the universe was restricted to all things battle-related. They might have observed other things. Chuckles, for example, noted the rocks on the planets he and his brethren had invaded. But their focus was fighting.

Now that the cyborgs have freed themselves, they’ve learned new information about the universe, about other beings, about themselves.

Green, for example, has indulged his love for plants and has shared his newfound knowledge with his brethren. Cyborgs now likely know more than they ever wanted to know about vegetation. LOL

As they explore planets and bond with the female living there, they learn about different cultures, about religion, about art.

Hoarse, the hero of December’s short story, for example, crafts ulus or dolls. He perceives that as a necessary offspring-rearing skill to be mastered but you and I realize the tough, rough C Model is indulging his creative, artist side. Relay, with his collection of lullabies, is also dipping his E Model toes into art.

Cyborgs are changing, are evolving and I find that extremely exciting to witness and to explore.

A reading buddy asked me if cyborgs would ever learn how to lie. Would they master the dubious skill of fabricating the truth?

Cyborgs HAVE learned other beings, including their females, can lie. They’ve learned how to recognize that and they realize that lying is sometimes the best tactic.

But they will never have the ability to lie. That is hard coded into their program and they wouldn’t risk damaging themselves to remove it.

Many of them also view it as a dishonorable tactic.  They would prefer to utilize other tactics like evasion or misdirection.

Cyborgs will change but some things will remain constant. Most of them will always love fighting. All of them would die before allowing another being to harm their genetic matches (their females or males or others). And they will never have the ability to fabricate the truth.

Testing Truth

A fun-loving cyborg gets serious about love.

Truth lives each moment as though it were his last. The cyborg warrior rushes into danger, teases beings he shouldn’t provoke, accepts every call of adventure he encounters.

When a prissy little human princess floats into the Rebel structure Truth is occupying, seeking a mercenary to assist her and her unusual entourage, he volunteers to be her warrior. She claims their assignment is dangerous, warns him he might not survive the task.

That is exactly the type of fun he has been seeking.

Princess Nanette of the planet Royaume must rescue her estranged brother from an enemy prison ship. That is her duty, and she has been trained to always place the needs of her planet and her subjects before her own. Nancy doesn’t have the freedom to indulge her passions for a certain dark-haired, gray-skinned cyborg. Not permanently and not publicly.

But she is unable to resist the warrior. Truth, with his laughing eyes, smiling lips, and rough hands, tempts her as no one else ever has. He could be her one fleeting act of rebellion before she’s matched with the powerful ruler her planet requires.

If they survive their current mission.

Their love is doomed. Their lifespans are at risk. This cyborg and his princess will need the help of every ally they have if they wish to see another sunrise.

Cyborgs As Explorers

By Cynthia Sax on August 4, 2020

One of the (many) things I love about the Cyborg Space Exploration part of the larger Cyborg series is that it places the cyborgs in a very different role than they normally enjoy.

Cyborgs were manufactured by the Humanoid Alliance for one main reason—to fight battles. They were designed to kill other beings. That’s their primary skill and one of their great pleasures.

Ending a being’s lifespan doesn’t require communicating with that being or learning a being’s culture or respecting them. It might be emotionally easier if cyborgs didn’t do that. They had very little interaction with other species, other than figuring out how to defeat and kill them.

Exploring planets and collecting genetic information on the locals are very different tasks. It is a peaceful mission (it makes no sense to collect genetic information on beings they will kill). Communicating with other beings, learning their cultures, respecting them makes that mission easier to complete.

The cyborgs have made mistakes while undertaking this mission. That’s to be expected. It is a brand new role for them. But they have also learned and grown as beings. They aren’t the same warriors they were in Choosing Chuckles.

And because cyborgs share information, ALL of the cyborgs have changed. Each encounter has taught them something new.

I’m excited to see how the events in Testing Truth will change the warriors.

Teenage Cyborgs

By Cynthia Sax on July 22, 2020

Future, Vector and Kasia’s son, makes an appearance in Testing Truth. We find out more about this freeborn C Model and his challenges on board the Reckless, reporting to his extremely protective Dad.

Future is physically fully mature. Cyborgs reach that point within one solar cycle (one year). Emotionally…well…he’s a teenager. He might have a little more control over his moods WHEN he wants to have that control. His processors and other mechanics assist with that. But when he’s acting without restrictions, he’s similar to a human teenager.

Young cyborgs, under Humanoid Alliance control, didn’t have the luxury of acting like human teenagers. Their training was severe. If they expressed emotion, they were decommissioned. If they refused commands or talked back, they suffered the same fate.

So the freeborn cyborgs are the first generation to have that experience. It is almost…a privilege (though I suspect their parents don’t always view it as that). And it will make them very different from their parents.
