This job and this man are mine.

I have to land the position Robert Reyes, the CFO of Powers Corporation, recently posted. My friend’s health depends on it. I’ve heard the rumors—that Rob will require… extra duties from this new hire.

He’s young, handsome, intelligent. Pleasing him won’t be a hardship. Not falling in love with him will be the big challenge. I’ve lusted after Rob for years, like him more than is prudent, dream of him every night. Touching his body, tasting the salt on his skin, will be both a self-inflicted torment and a fantasy come true.

I’ll be a convenience for my hunky executive. This is a job, not a romance. As long as both of us remember this, our relationship should work.

Medical Play And Defying Death

By Cynthia Sax on April 11, 2016

Tifara, the heroine of Defying Death, is a medic. That means there will, of course, be some sexy times in the examination room. This kink has a name—medical play. There are ranges of extreme with medical play, as there are with any kink. Death and Tifara play on the light side.

Here is a snippet from a scene

***

Tifara lay back, allowing Death to undress her. He drew her flight suit over her curves. His eyes darkened with passion.

“First, I have to examine my female.” Death grasped her ankles, encircling them easily with his big fingers, and he spread her legs wide, exposing her naked pussy, her empty entrance. “I must ensure she isn’t damaged.”

“You’re not a medic.” She reached her hands out to the side, this playful version of her normally grim as fuck cyborg enchanting her. “Are you qualified to examine me?”

“I’m a J model cyborg.” He lifted his head proudly. “And I’ve observed the best medic I’ve ever met for several planet rotations. I’m qualified.”

“Are you recording this?” That possibility tightened her nipples.

“Yes.” He nodded, the lights illuminating his dark hair. “We’ll study the footage later, look for abnormalities.”

They’d watch themselves fucking. Tifara’s pussy dripped.

“I’m visually scanning the patient.” Her cyborg perused her slowly, his all-seeing gaze pausing on her face, her breasts, her hips, her pink folds. “The patient’s nipples are taut.” His voice was robotic, lacking all emotion, and that excited her even more. “Her pussy is plumped with an increased flow of blood. The color has deepened. Her breathing has quickened and her body temperature, especially around her genitalia, has increased.”

He acted as though many medics were observing her, gazing upon her naked body. Tifara fought the urge to move, to wiggle her bare ass against the sleeping support.

“Checking breasts for fullness.” Death leaned over her and cupped her curves with his big hands, shaping, molding and massaging them.

She arched, pushing them into his palms, pleasure radiating from the contact. His eyes blazed with emotion. His face remained as serious and stoic as always.

“The patient’s breasts are heavy and full.” He pinched her nipples and pulled, elongating them, and she whimpered, the slight pain exciting her. “Her nipples have good color.”

He released them and she sighed, wanting more.

“Testing them for taste.” Her cyborg drew her right nipple into his hot, wet mouth and sucked, the pressure exquisite. He sucked and relented, sucked and relented, setting off a pulsing throughout her body. Her fingers curled, digging into the sleeping support. “The right nipple tastes fertile.”

He dragged his lips over her curves and applied his mouth to the left. She rocked into his mouth, unable to remain still.

“The left nipple tastes as fertile.” He straightened. “The patient is responsive to oral stimulation of her breasts.”

“Death—”

“Medic,” he corrected. “You will remain silent and still during your examination.” He surveyed the assortment of medical supplies she’d left on the nearby horizontal support. “Any movement could affect the results.”

He snapped a large pair of hand coverings over his fingers, the sound echoing in the small chamber. His eyes gleamed as he positioned himself between her spread legs.

Medical play doesn’t work for everyone but it certainly works for Death and Tifara. (grins)

Defying Death

He’ll risk it all for one moment of happiness.

Cyborgs don’t show emotion. Death learned that lesson early in his long lifespan. To survive, he hides his fierce passions behind a stoic wall. He calls no warrior friend. He never admits to caring for any being.

Even the human female he’s destined to love.

Tifara is Death’s obsession, his sole opportunity for happiness, to express the all-consuming passion burning brightly inside him. He’ll do anything to obtain the curvaceous medic: defy a direct order, abduct Tifara from her battle station, and wage war on his fellow cyborgs.

To earn her love, he’ll have to risk much, much more.

Defying Death And Obsessed Heroines

By Cynthia Sax on April 4, 2016

When I’m reading a great book, I’m lost to the world. I don’t eat. I don’t sleep. A freight train could run through the room and I wouldn’t notice it. My dear wonderful hubby takes one look at my face and knows there’s no sense talking to me. I won’t hear him. I’m happily lost in this other world, absorbed, obsessed.

THIS is how Tifara, the heroine of Defying Death is, except, instead of books, she’s obsessed with medical research, with stopping the next possible outbreak.

Here’s a snippet showing her obsession, seen from Death’s more logical eyes

***

“But is my lack of attraction to other cyborgs due to our unique genetic pairing?” She took a step blindly to the left.

Death cupped her head, holding her in place, stopping her pacing. This wasn’t the cave or their ship. The terrain around them held dangers and his little medic was cognizant of none of them. He had to keep her by his side.

“Or is my lack of attraction because I already host your nanocybotics?” Tifara didn’t appear to notice his hand on the top of her head. She was lost in science again. “Hmmm…”

Her erotic humming hardened his cock.

“What is your female talking about?” Menace looked at him.

Death said nothing. The warrior would learn soon enough that his female questioned anything and everything in the universe.

***

Death doesn’t truly know why Tifara is obsessed with medical research. He grows to accept it but he doesn’t understand her fascination with it.

My dear wonderful hubby is the same way. He isn’t a reader. He’s read three books in the twenty-three years I’ve known and loved him. But he’s grown to accept my obsession with reading. He sees how happy it makes me.

He’ll give me books for special occasions, listens as I describe each book in detail (he knows as much about romance novels as I do because I tell him EVERYTHING), can talk the talk when we spend time with other reading buddies but he doesn’t fully understand why I love reading romance novels.

All he knows is I love reading and it makes me happy and that’s enough for him.

What are you obsessed with?

First Excerpt From Defying Death

By Cynthia Sax on March 31, 2016

See other great SciFi romance posts here – http://sfrcontests.blogspot.ca/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html

I’ll be previewing the first chapter of Defying Death, starting on the 18th, but since the first chapter doesn’t contain Tifara, our heroine, I thought I’d supply a glimpse at chapter two today.

***

She leaned against the bloodstained wall. Why would he kill a being if that weren’t necessary? His thinking wasn’t rational.

Because he was ill, she realized. She must be ill also. That was the only explanation for her attraction to him. “You’re contagious. What are your symptoms?”

“My kind doesn’t become ill.”

Every species was susceptible to some sort of illness. “You know you’re ill. This is a medical bay. That’s why you’re here.”

“I’m here for you.” Light reflected off sharp metal blades.

He was here for her. She was a medic. That was the only expertise she had. He must desire treatment, though he clearly couldn’t grasp that.

“You’re irrational.” Tifara listed his symptoms. “Violent, highly contagious, yet you’re continuing to exude pheromones.” She pushed herself upward, standing. “Come here.” She beckoned toward the sleeping support. “I have to examine you.”

“You believe I’m violent, irrational and contagious and you wish to examine me?” Incredulity colored his voice. “Did you learn nothing from the Palavian?”

“I learned the virus you have makes you violent.” Tifara smiled reassuringly and patted the surface of the sleeping support. “Sit here.”

“I don’t have a virus.” The male stepped forward.

Her jaw dropped. She’d expected a feverish, wild-eyed, flush-skinned being suffering from welts and boils, visibly ill, on the precipice of dying.

This male was the image of a warrior in his prime, devastatingly handsome, overwhelmingly virile, and extremely grim.

He was taller than any human she’d ever met; broad-shouldered, slender-hipped, encased in black body armor. His hair was dark brown, his eyes an even darker shade, his skin golden, his lips firm and flat. There were numbers inked high on his right cheek—J052154.

She stared at him with awe. “You’re a cyborg.”

“I’m a cyborg.” He dipped his head, his expression deadly serious.

“I can’t believe it.” Tifara hurried toward him. “I’ve always wanted to examine one of your kind.” She tilted her head back to gaze up at him. “You look so human.”

He narrowed his eyes at her.

“You’re huge.” She placed her palm on his chest, wishing it were bare. He shuddered, his reaction captivating her. “Responsive.” She knocked on his body armor. There was no give in his physique. “Solid.”

“Lethal.” His tone was dry. “Cyborgs are manufactured to kill.”

“Yes. Yes.” Tifara waved her right hand. If he had planned to kill her, she’d already be dead.

Defying Death – Old Friends And New Allies

By Cynthia Sax on March 28, 2016

Some reading buddies have asked who will make an appearance in Defying Death. Death is, of course, the hero. Tifara, Safyre’s medic buddy, is the heroine. Also appearing are Crash, Safyre, Menace, Mayhem, Ace and Thrasher.

Defying Death can be read on its own. However, it will deal with what happened in Crash And Burn. I found this story really helped me sort through those emotions.

What occurred on Tau Ceti has also changed the cyborgs’ focus. Two compatible females (Joan and Mira) might be abnormalities but four shows them that they ALL might have females.

These lonely warriors could have females waiting for them, needing their protection, and this gives them a sense of urgency. They no longer wish merely to escape. They wish to safeguard their females.

As Death observes

“They weren’t concerned for themselves. Cyborgs were manufactured to fight and eventually to die in battle. They’d long resigned themselves to that fate.

But to leave their females unprotected was unthinkable.”

As we all know, NO ONE threatens a cyborg’s female and continues to breathe. (grins)

Angry super protective cyborgs aren’t the only threat to the Humanoid Alliance. Humans aren’t the sole beings in the universe. There are other species, some of them much more powerful. In the past, they’ve minded their own business, thinking the Humanoid Alliance’s actions to be none of their concerns.

The Humanoid Alliance has hidden most of their crimes but there’s no hiding what happened on Tau Ceti. The entire universe now knows what Humanoid Alliance is willing to do and many species won’t tolerate that type of threat to themselves or to others.

Yep, the Humanoid Alliance is in deep, deep shit.

One And Done – Contemporary Erotic Romance

This will be a longer story, over 300 pages long (depending on your eReader).

Here is the VERY rough blurb

Hit it and quit it—that’s Smoke Sheridan’s relationship philosophy. The tall, dark and dangerous club owner never spends more than one night with any woman. He seduces the broken hearted, leaving them with smiles on their faces and a sexual confidence other men can’t resist.

I need his services.

My boyfriend of four years dumped me because I’m a lousy lay. Smoke can help me win him back, teaching me how to make men writhe in ecstasy, bellow my name in the dark of the night, want me with an all consuming desire.

This sounds like a great plan. Except I see the loneliness in Smoke’s eyes, feel the wistfulness in his touch, experience the wanting in his embrace. The player isn’t as shallow as he appears.

And I’ve never been good at letting go.

One And Done contains inappropriate humor, very bad pickup lines, a BBW heroine who doesn’t know what she’s doing and a player who thinks he does.

August

Chasing Mayhem – Cyborg Erotic Romance

I’m writing this story right now. The hero is, of course, Mayhem, a J model cyborg we first met in Crash And Burn. He appears in Defying Death also. His heroine is Imee, a kick ass Retriever for the Humanoid Alliance. She’s the female Menace jokes about in Defying Death.

November

Commanding Her Cyborgs (rough title) – Cyborg Erotic Romance

Ace and Thrasher are the heroes in this story. We first met Ace and Thrasher in Breathing Vapor. They appear in Defying Death also. The heroine will be the Commander of the rebel battle station. She’s an older female (as the cyborgs don’t age, they find older females even more exotic) and has enough experience to keep these two males in line. (grins)

December

Jumping Barrel – Cyborg Erotic Romance Short Story

Barrel is the hero. We first met him in Releasing Rage. He also appears in Being Green. This short story will be given for free to newsletter subscribers.

These are all of the stories I know I’m releasing for certain in 2016.

I’ll keep you posted when I know more!

Crash And Burn – Fifth Excerpt

By Cynthia Sax on February 16, 2016

Crash And Burn, the third standalone cyborg story will be releasing next week (February 23rd). I’m sharing the first chapter over the next few weeks.

Read the first excerpt here: http://tasteofcyn.com/2016/01/19/crash-and-burn-first-excerpt/

***

If you fucked me, I’d be your first orange-haired female. She liked the thought of being his first…anything. He’d remember her.

I am breeding with you. Crash remained in their fantasy. You’re cradling my hips between your soft thighs.

And I’m gripping your shoulders as you hump me hard. She closed her eyes, envisioning a taut tanned ass pumping between her spread legs, muscles rippling over the male’s back. I’m a big female and you’re using me well, plunging in and out of me.

I’m bending my head and sucking on your pink nipples, making you cry out with bliss.

Fuck, yeah. She slid one of her hands along her rounded stomach, over her hairless mons and cupped her pussy. You’re working my titty as you ravish me. She stroked her folds. I’m so wet for you, Crash. I’m dripping.

You’re covering me with your scent, with your heat.

Are you stroking your large cock as you transmit to me? Was he as naked as she was?

I shouldn’t.

But you are. You can’t help yourself. Safyre smiled. You want me as I want you.

He’d be easy to manipulate. She’d spread her legs and he’d agree to everything she requested. That would ensure her safety. As long as he was sexually appeased, she wouldn’t have to worry about him turning on her.

Your voice strips my resolve. Skin slapped against skin.

I want to feel you inside me. She pushed her index finger into her entrance. How many fingers should I use? One? Two? She added another one. Three? This pulled her skin tight.

Four.

Oh fuck. She complied, wincing at the fullness. He’d reshape her body with his big cock. You’re too large.

You can accommodate me, female. His tone was stern.

Safyre forced herself to take all four of her fingers, knowing his cock would be even larger. He’d be the biggest she’d ever taken.

She wanted him, wanted that experience before she died.

All four fingers are inside me. She cringed at the need for approval in her tone.

Good female. He gave her what she needed. Pleasure yourself with those fingers and process images of me, of my cock in your pussy.

Your broad tip is sliding along my inner walls. Your base flattens my folds. She fucked herself, the sucking sound of skin in wetness echoing in the ship, softening the rattling sounds. Sweat is trickling between my breasts.

Making your pale skin sparkle. Crash’s voice deepened. Your breasts caress my chest.

My nipples rub against you. She ached for his touch. I wrap my legs around your waist, lifting into your thrusts. She plunged her fingers in and out of her pussy. You grunt, your cheek pressed against mine.

The grunts are due to pleasure. I’m a strong male and breeding with you requires no exertion.

He was an arrogant being. Safyre’s lips curled upward. My pussy constricts more and more around your shaft. As she was constricting around her fingers. She panted, hitching her hips upward, her juices running over her hand. I’m tight and hot and wet.

You’re all around me. He made a strangled noise. Soft. So fraggin’ soft.

You’re driving your hard cock deep inside me, smacking your balls against my skin. She was lost, teetering on the edge of the abyss, needing a shove to push her over. I dig my fingernails into your shoulders, holding on.

Marking me. His excitement fed hers. Claiming me as I’m claiming you. You’re my female. Mine.

Yours. And, in that moment, she belonged to him. They were two lonely beings connecting over a transmission line, sectors apart physically yet emotionally one. Crash. Crash.

Mine. Mine, he chanted.

Crash. She swept one of her thumbs over her clit, pleasure shot through her and she screamed, arching her back, coming hard.

He bellowed, almost deafening her. The bridge spun around her, lights blurring into a constant stream of illumination.

She pumped her hips, draining the last drop of ecstasy from her body and then collapsed, sagging against the chair. Crash, she murmured, lowering her feet.

My female. He sounded just as sexually sated.

A metallic taste filled her mouth. She rubbed a cleaning cloth under her nose. The fabric turned red. Her nose was bleeding again.

But it was worth it. She spread her arms and legs, her form limp and languid. She felt more relaxed than she had been in solar cycles.

The ship continued to spin around her.

Does your E model communications device allow you to see images? Safyre yawned. She wanted to know what he looked like.

Yes.

I wish I had that ability. She sighed. Though I suppose I’ll see your face soon.

It’s best that you don’t. This reckless plan of yours could end in your death.

It could end in my death but not yours? Was he planning to betray her?

I’m difficult to kill.

Her lips twitched, his conceit amusing her. I’m difficult to kill also and this mission is necessary. Another being’s welfare depends on our plan.

That being’s welfare is more important than your lifespan?

Yeah. Nymphia was pure and innocent and kind. Her friend was worth ten of her.

There was a long pause. A black funnel closed around Safyre’s vision, stifling her thoughts. She hovered on the edge of sleep.

My eyes frighten beings. Crash’s words were barely audible.

He wasn’t as confident as he acted. Safyre found that endearing also. Are you certain it’s your eyes that scare them? You’re a fierce warrior. She plumped his ego. Beings would have to be mentally deficient not to fear you.

Another female made a similar statement.

Safyre didn’t like that reply. He was her partner, even if she hadn’t met him. That other female won’t be joining us on the freighter.

No, she won’t. I would never put her in jeopardy. She’s too precious.

And she wasn’t precious? Safyre’s temper rose. This conversation is over. She covered her eyes with her arm, blocking out the light, his voice, the hurt.

Because she knew the answer to her unspoken question. She wasn’t essential to any being. It didn’t matter if she was injured, if she died. No being would miss her.

She shifted in her seat. Her chair fit her body perfectly, having been molded to her form over thousands of voyages. But this planet rotation, she couldn’t get comfortable.

It was many moments before Safyre fell asleep.

Crash And Burn

Crash was manufactured to be one of the best warriors in the universe. The cyborg has spent many human lifespans fighting the enemy. But, unlike his battle-loving brethren, he doesn’t enjoy killing. When he escapes the Humanoid Alliance, he vows to never end another life.

Then he meets Safyre, an infuriating human female, and he considers breaking his vow.

Safyre will do anything to save her friend, the being she loves like a sister. She’ll ravish a huge hunky cyborg, kiss his best friend, and invoke scorching hot desires the male never realized he could feel. Dark soulful eyes, a quick wit, and a tempestuous passion won’t divert her from her mission.

Love, and a planet-destroying weapon, however, might stop her permanently.

The ship shot into the blackness, open space in front of her, to her left and to her right. Takeoff and landing were the two most dangerous parts of any voyage. The majority of the trip was quite boring, requiring very little skill.

Her ship could handle the navigation. Safyre input their destination into the guidance system. Once upon a time, the guidance system supposedly had a voice. That had malfunctioned before she purchased the ship. But it did have an alarm. Red lights would flash and a siren would wail if the ship encountered anything unexpected.

As it settled into a constant velocity, the rattling decreased. It never completely went away. There were too many loosely fixed parts on board.

Safyre tapped a blinking light. It vanished. Her ship’s age and poor shape would be a benefit on this run. No one on the freighter would question her need for repairs.

That would be the official excuse she’d use to board. Captain Kray would assume she was contacting him for sex. Half a solar cycle ago, she’d given the randy freighter captain the best blow job he’d ever experienced. Being an arrogant male, he’d think she was back for seconds.

She’d suck off the entire ship if it meant she reached Nymphia. But she shouldn’t have to. The captain would want her to himself first. The K-19 in her pocket should ensure he kept his flight suit fastened.

The ship trekked through space. Safyre yawned. There were no signs of other vessels. She set the course and activated autopilot. It was time to relax and she knew the best way to do that.

Now that her headache was gone and her nosebleed had stopped, her horniness had returned. She kicked off her boots and unfastened her flight suit. A hot and heavy masturbation session would quiet her brain and allow her to sleep.

She wiggled out of her garment. A slash of red caught her gaze. She touched the scarf wrapped around her forearm. Nymphia had given it to her before going on her last run. The scarf would remain on her arm, to be removed only when she saw the girl again.

Safyre propped her heels on the console and spread her legs, opening herself fully to the universe. Seated nearly naked on the bridge of her ship, her audience was an expanse of blackness.

She rubbed her hands over her breasts, hips, thighs, deliberately avoiding her pussy. Heat flicked over her, the contact, even with her own fingers, exciting her.

Fuck. That was how lonely she was. She turned herself on.

There was no one else to complete that task. She plucked her nipples and squeezed her curves, teasing her body. Desire built and built and built.

But she needed more.

She ran her hands along her inner thighs, moving them closer to her center. Her pussy wet with anticipation. She drifted her fingers over her folds and moaned.

Do you require repairs, female?

Oh shit, Crash was listening to her. She hadn’t noticed that he’d opened the transmission line. That was a moan of pleasure, warrior. I’m not hurt.

You’re with a male? His tone sharpened.

Was he jealous? She touched herself. That was unlikely. He’d never met her, never seen her, trusted her even less than she trusted him. I’m alone.

You’re pleasuring yourself?

Yeah. She circled her entrance, grazing over her clit. If you want to talk about our plans, you should contact me at a later time. I’m a little busy at the moment.

Have the plans changed? Have you finally applied your processors and abandoned them?

Processors. Safyre’s lips twisted. I have a brain, not processors. You’ve been spending too much time with cyborgs. And nothing has changed. I’m not abandoning anything. Or anyone. She’d reach Nymphia’s side.

Then there’s no need to discuss the plans.

Would he close the transmission line now, leave her? She’d be alone again, always. Safyre skimmed her fingertips over her pussy, some of her joy dissipating.

Describe your actions.

She blinked once, twice, questioning her hearing. You want to know how I’m pleasuring myself? Why did that arouse her?

You lack the ability to transmit images.

He wanted to watch her masturbate. Safyre’s ass wiggled against the leather captain’s chair. What do you want to know? How dirty did he wish for her to be?

Are you touching your breasts?

She wasn’t but she would touch them for him. I’m squeezing them. She cupped them with both hands, the contact flowing down her spine, curling her toes. I can’t squeeze all of them at once. They’re too large.

He rumbled through the lines, the sound thrilling her. You’re soft.

Very soft. I’d surround you with curves.

You won’t surround me. I’m a very large male. His arrogance made her smile.

Are you large all over?

Yes.

Mmmm… She moaned, loving big males. Your huge cock would stretch my pussy. I’d fit you snugly, clinging to your shaft, as you thrust in and out of me. The image she crafted in her mind fueled her arousal. How would you take me? Face-to-face? From behind?

I’d breed with you face-to-face. You’ll know who is claiming you.

They’d breed, not fuck. His words were excitingly primitive. Your chest would rub against my breasts. Was his chest smooth or did he have a mat of rough hair? I’m pinching my nipples right now. She tweaked the taut tips, the tinge of pain drawing more wetness from her core.

What color are they?

My nipples are pink. My skin is white with freckles.

Freckles. He paused. Small patches of light brown pigment on your skin.

Had he looked up the word? Her lips twitched. My hair is short, spiked, and bright orange.

I’ve never seen a human female with orange hair.

He’d never seen a human female. Crash must mix with other species. I color it.

It was a warning to every being of who she was.

A couple of solar cycles ago, a male in a beverage station had insulted Nymphia, calling her a fat bovine. That had angered Safyre. No one hurt her friend. She had pushed Nymphia aside, rolled up her sleeves and beat the disrespect out of the male.

While he lay on the floor, holding his nuts, moaning, Tifara had mentioned that she should be forced to wear a sign, warning others of her temper.

Safyre had colored her hair bright orange the next planet rotation.

A prick on her arm diverted her attention. Tifara stood beside her with an injector gun.

“What did you do?” Safyre demanded.

“We’ve known each other almost all of our lifespans. I can tell when you’re hurting.” Tifara clucked her tongue. “That’s a pain suppressor for your headache. If it gets worse, we’ll have to remove the implant.”

It had already gotten a lot worse. “Fuck, Tifara.” Safyre pushed herself to her booted feet, feeling light-headed. “Crash is able to talk with me at any time. I need a functioning brain when I deal with him.”

She stumbled out of the chamber.

“You’re welcome.” The doors closed on Tifara’s cheery voice.

Another reason Safyre needed a functioning brain was because she was flying this planet rotation. She leaned against the wall for a moment, fighting the urge to vomit.

Beings passed her, gazing at her questioningly. None of them stopped because none of them truly cared.

About her. They had their causes, many of them seeking to rescue beings from the evil clutches of the Humanoid Alliance.

She’d rescued her fair share, flying into areas no pilot should ever fly into.

But Tau Ceti would be the worst she’d seen.

The planet was the site of a cyborg manufacturing facility. The Humanoid Alliance, concerned that the facility would fall into the wrong hands, was extending major resources to defend it. They’d locked down all of the Tau Cetian airspace, allowing only authorized ships to enter, destroying all others.

There was one docking facility still standing. They controlled that, too.

For now. The fighting was fierce, the battle having raged for over a solar cycle. Rumors said the rebels were winning, their forces helped by off-planet allies. Many of the locals had hid in tunnels during the initial purifying. They had warriors, weapons, missiles, and were downing a remarkable number of ships.

They could down the freighter. If she made it onto the planet, it would be a miracle. She was unlikely to make it off. Two beings leaving the planet’s surface was an impossibility.

She knew she was going to die during this mission. She’d accepted that.

Safyre glanced at the closed doors. She wouldn’t see her friend again, wouldn’t be patched up by her healing hands, view her smiling face, feel the warmth of her hugs, hear her bubbling laughter. Her heart ached. “Good-bye, Tifara.”

She swiped her dripping nose with the cleaning cloth and strode toward the docking bay, not looking behind her.

Her pack and the supplies had been loaded. She entered the space. Her ship was ready to go.

Some beings would debate that statement. The exterior was a patchwork of different-colored panels, all salvaged from wrecks. The interior wasn’t much better.

But it was hers. Safyre patted the side, savoring the smack of palm against unrelenting metal. She’d scrimped and saved credits to buy the vessel, taking the merc jobs no one else wanted, spending endless planet rotations in open space.

Unfortunately, Mesh, her ship, didn’t have clearance to land on Tau Ceti.

Three human males glanced in her direction. She knew them, had helped the largest male with a route issue. They didn’t approach her, didn’t ask her where she was going, what she was doing.

She told herself that was because information about many missions was restricted. The reality was…they didn’t care.

Safyre strode up the ramp, closing the doors behind her.

She breathed deeply and the weight bearing down on her shoulders lightened. This was her home, the only home that had ever truly belonged to her.

She drifted her fingers over the lopsided container Nymphia had made for her birthing day five solar cycles ago. Her gaze fell on the white scarf wrapped around a pillar. That had belonged to Tifara. It had been payment for medicine she’d sourced for one of her friend’s patients. That had been an adventure, one she barely survived.

Her ship was small but it was filled with memories.

It was also deathly silent.

Safyre was used to that. She’d spent much of her lifespan alone. The supply runs and the rescue missions she undertook for the Beings For Peace were risky. If she were caught, the Humanoid Alliance would interrogate, torture, and kill every being on board her ship. It was better she didn’t have a copilot.

Her lucrative private sector deliveries were even more dangerous. She was paid very well to fly into regions no sane pilot would. Flying solo meant no splitting of those credits and no guilt if she made a mistake.

Sex sessions with random males gave her a moment of comfort but left her feeling lonelier. She couldn’t talk to them, couldn’t tell them anything about who she was and what she did. They met as strangers and left as the same.

Safyre was tired, so fuckin’ tired of the isolation. A mission ending in certain death didn’t scare her. A future filled with meaningless encounters did.

She strapped herself into the captain’s seat and underwent the usual take-off verifications, deriving comfort from the routine.

“It’s you and me for one more run, Mesh.” She started the engines. The ship rumbled like a great discontented beast, unhappy to be awakened. “Come on, baby. You can do this.”

The engines leveled as though responding to her words. Safyre navigated the ship through the battle station’s docking bay.

“That’s it,” she continued to talk to her vessel, needing to hear the sound of some being’s voice, even if it were her own. “Once we clear the battle station, I’ll put you on autopilot and you can do your thing. You’ll like that.”

The pain suppressors had kicked in. Her headache was gone, her nosebleed had slowed to a trickle, and she felt drowsy, not having had a solid sleep since the implant was inserted.

Safyre accelerated. The force of the takeoff drove her back in her seat. She gritted her teeth and grinned, loving this part of the flight. There was no experience like being propelled into space.
