Seizing Power – First Scene Of The First Chapter
The official countdown to the release day of Seizing Power, the fifth story in the Rebel Cyborgs series, has started! Woot!
While we wait for Seizing Power to release on February 22nd (2/22/22 – grins), I’ll be sharing the first chapter, starting today with the very first scene.

Chapter One
There was only one leader in a group.
Power was that being for every cyborg in existence.
He sat behind a horizontal support at the far end of the cyborg council chambers. His back faced the wall. Other members of the council were positioned to his left and to his right. Vector, the captain’s crew, and their females stood in front of him.
Ruling was a solitary role. It required emotional and physical distance from others—a separation from the beings who might influence him, who might sway him to make incorrect decisions, convince him to place their interests before the welfare of the larger group.
He had made that mistake. Once. He quashed a grimace.
The results of that choice had been catastrophic. It had killed every being he cared for, had nearly ended him, had endangered the entire cyborg Homeland.
Power would never make that same error again.
His stance came at a cost. He had no close friends. Not alive. Not any longer. His lips flattened. He hadn’t yet found his female, the one being genetically compatible with him, a much-wanted helpmate he could keep safely by his side, tell his secrets to, share his tasks with.
There was no one he completely trusted.
He was alone. That was a conscious choice, a sacrifice he had made for his kind.
At times, like now, when warriors questioned his authority, he wondered why he had fought for his current role.
“This matter has been discussed.” Power clipped off each word, not attempting to hide his irritation.
Vector had approached him first, privately.
Power had dismissed the issue, not viewing it as a threat.
“Our lifeform scans detected five thousand, one hundred and thirty-two beings on the surface of Mercury Minor.” The warship captain stubbornly relayed that information. Again. “There were four thousand and ninety-eight cyborgs, eight hundred and one humanoids, two hundred and thirty-three humans.”
“There should be only three beings on the surface of Mercury Minor—Ghost, his human female and their offspring.” Vengeance, the C Model representative on the cyborg council, frowned.
That lucky warrior had found his genetic match. Astrid Ragnhild, the Buoir Berserker, Vengeance’s Warrior Female, sat by her male’s side.
She rested her head on the C Model’s shoulder.
Power bit back his envy. That was what he wanted—that connection.
And he had tried to seize it. Desperate for companionship, he had sought to claim the human female for his own.
That pursuit had ended in embarrassment. He inwardly winced. But fortunately, it hadn’t impacted his role as leader.
He remained in charge.
“Ghost and his human female’s offspring should be a cyborg.” Medic Tifara, Death’s female, shared that projection under her breath. “He should be male. And he should be fully mature by now.” Her reasoning was logical. 100.0000 percent of the offspring of cyborgs had been cyborg and male. Cyborgs matured within a solar cycle. “Has he transmitted?” She looked up at her warrior.
“No transmissions have been received from the offspring.” Death kissed his human’s forehead.
“He must have the same challenges as his father has.” She nodded as though agreeing with her own statement.
It was a conclusion Power had also reached. Ghost was severely damaged, struggled to communicate with others. There was a 76.5892 percent probability the C Model’s offspring suffered from the same malfunction as his father.
“Multiple lifeform scans were run, utilizing multiple systems.” Vector braced his booted feet farther apart. The captain of the Reckless was determined to beat them over the head with unwanted information. “There was visual verification of structures.” Images flashed across the viewscreens hanging on the walls around them. “I am 97.2536 percent certain there are more than three beings on the surface of the planet.”
Power was 99.2659 percent certain there were more than three beings inhabiting Mercury Minor. He’d seen the images, the data. Cyborgs didn’t lie, and Vector had more honor than most beings he had encountered.
But the activities of five thousand, one hundred and thirty-two beings situated at the edge of cyborg-controlled space weren’t a priority for him. He was responsible for millions of cyborgs. Many of them orbited the Homeland in crowded battle stations. They impatiently awaited assignments, were at all times one wrong word away from killing each other.
He had more important problems to solve.

Thousands Of Friends
When I was a teenager, I would volunteer at long term care residences. For a few fortunate months, I was paired with an absolutely wonderful and hilariously witty older woman I grew to love dearly. She was blind, was slowly going deaf. My task was to read to her.
I asked her if she was scared. Once she lost her remaining hearing, she would be cut off communication-wise from almost everyone.
(She no longer had the hand coordination to read braille. And computers weren’t as advanced then as they are now.)
She would be alone.
She smiled at me. “Readers are never alone, my love. We have thousands of friends living up in here.” She tapped her forehead. “I’ll simply be spending more time with them. We’ll have grand adventures and good long chats.”
I have thought of her often during this pandemic. My corner of the universe is currently locked down again. We shouldn’t leave the house unless it is necessary. We’re separated from many loved ones.
But I have thousands of friends living in my brain, heroes and heroines from the thousands of novels I’ve read and written and will write in the future.
That’s a gift.

Cyborgs And Parents Who Never Age
My Awesome Mom is getting older. She gathers more laugh lines on her beautiful face every year. Her fastball is slowing down a bit. It is still faster than mine is. (grins) My Awesome Mom could have turned pro if the fates had been aligned. She’s a bada$$.
I would love for my Awesome Mom to remain young forever.
That isn’t possible…yet… for humans. It IS possible for cyborgs and for cyborgs’ genetic matches.
Eirene Ours’/Cadet’s parents, Ghost and Lethe, will never age. They will look the same, will likely have the same physical capabilities for their entire lifespans.
But they WILL change emotionally and mentally. Becoming parents has shifted Ghost and Lethe’s outlooks on the universe. Lethe, for example, is more cautious. She watches what she says (as her daughter repeated everything she uttered). She is truly a Mom.
I love seeing her evolution as a being.

The Release Date For Provoking Odium
I’ve received some questions about the release date for Provoking Odium, the first story in the next cyborg series. This cyborg romance is tentatively releasing in June, four months from the release date for Seizing Power. Buddies are wondering why this story will take so long to write and edit.
I’m hoping it WON’T take that long to write and edit. I hope we will hit the three month dates on each stage of writing/editing and can release it in May.
That could happen. Booksellers are quite happy to move release dates forward.
They do not like it AT ALL when we push release dates back. I decided to be cautious and give myself and my Awesome Editor an extra month…just in case.
Because the world is extremely unpredictable right now. We still have a pandemic happening. Climate change disasters seem to be on the upswing. There were the holidays to consider. We don’t know what we’ll be facing tomorrow.
For now, the release date for Provoking Odium will remain in June.
This story WILL be worth the wait. I DO know that. (grins)

Seizing Power And Eirene Ours’ Name
Eirene Ours aka Cadet, the heroine of Seizing Power, is the daughter of Ghost, a severely damaged C Model, and Lethe, his courageous human female.
Eirene Ours’ name is a nod to both of them.
Ours is one of the few words Ghost can say and it signals her relationship to them. She is theirs. Eirene Ours is also a genetic match for a cyborg warrior (Power) and would read as ‘Ours’ in Ghost’s processors.
Eirene was one of the Horae in Greek mythology. She was the personification of Peace, which is very fitting for a child of two warriors.
Lethe was a nod to the river of forgetfulness, one of the five rivers in the Greek Underworld. Everyone who drank from it forgot all their troubles and…well…everything else. So Eirene Ours’ name is connected to her mother’s name through Greek mythology.

Seizing Power And Size Differences
Eirene Ours aka Cadet, the heroine of Seizing Power (releasing in February), is a C Model cyborg female. Power, the hero, is a later E Model cyborg male.
Cyborgs, as they evolved, became smaller, similar to how computers have become smaller over the solar cycles. The first computers were huge. Today’s computers fit in our pockets and have much more processing power. Cyborg technology followed the same progression.
C Models are MUCH taller and broader than E Models.
Eirene Ours is taller than Power is.

Seizing Power And Female Cyborgs
Eirene Ours aka Cadet, the heroine of Seizing Power, is a female cyborg.
She isn’t the first female cyborg we’ve encountered. Female cyborgs were manufactured by the Humanoid Alliance’s failed breeding programs. Some of them survived that disaster, escaped their fabricators.
These female cyborgs are technically C Models like Eirene Ours is. But their body shape isn’t identical to hers. They were manufactured, designed in the images of what humans thought female cyborgs should look like.
Sky, the female cyborg we meet in Releasing Rage is described by Joan.

A female cyborg sauntered toward them, her barely there hips swaying. She was tall with high firm breasts and a waist Joan would kill for. Her skin was the lightest shade of gray, her hair long and black, her eyes brilliant blue.

Eirene Ours, in contrast, is the child of Ghost, a male C Model cyborg, and Lethe, a human female. Ghost’s genetics are dominant and that reflects in Eirene Ours’ appearance.
She is sturdy, large all over. Her shoulders are wide. Her hips are generous. Her waist is solid. She has the gray skin, black hair, brilliant blue eyes of her kind but her features are stronger than her manufactured counterparts are.
Eirene Ours is truly one of a kind.

Does Power Know He’s An Arrogant A$$?
A reading buddy asked me if Power, the leader of the Cyborg Council and the hero of Seizing Power (releasing in February), is aware how he’s perceived by his fellow cyborgs.
Does he know he’s an arrogant a$$?
Power is a highly intelligent warrior. He realizes other cyborgs don’t like him. He is fully aware they don’t perceive him as being their friend or even their ally.
So why doesn’t he change?
Because that perception works for him. He believes distance between himself and the other cyborgs is necessary to be a good leader. His past, he believes, has proven that to be true.

Seizing Power And Learning From Others
Eirene Ours/Cadet, the heroine from Seizing Power (releasing in February), is a leader.
She was fortunate to have her parents, Ghost and Lethe, as mentors. Ghost isn’t a savvy communicator (grins) but he knows battle strategy. Lethe had mentors skilled in leaders to guide her. (Her mentors included including Carys, the heroine from Hers To Command.)
Eirene Ours has also learned leadership, what to do and what not to do, from research and from watching the footage saved in the cyborgs’ shared databases. Some of that footage was of Power.
Yes. (grins) Eirene Ours learned leadership from her opponent. She has also studied his battle tactics.
Power is about to be surprised and I can’t wait for that to happen! He needs something or someone to shake him out of his smugness. I suspect Eirene Ours will be that being.
