Mohini, the heroine of Grin And Bare Him, wears the poshaak, the flowing garments of her kind, the Praecipuans. Poshaaks consist of strips of special fabric, tied to the humanoids’ bodies. Some of the fabric is wrapped tightly around their chests and hips. The rest of it flows around their legs.
These garments are important to Praecipuans for several different reasons.
Poshaaks cover their bodies and keep them warm and dry. They also protect their skin from the sun.
The fabric is treated to protect Praecipuans from the Divining Branch. This First Gift is their most powerful weapon. It is also a valued resource.
And the strips of fabric are used in their mating rituals. Praecipuans bind their partners. The ritual kind of resembles Shibari, Japanese rope bondage, here on Earth.

Grin And Bare Him And The Importance Of Water
Mohini’s kind, in Grin And Bare Him, value water VERY highly. Their ancestors almost died from drought.
Buddies and I were chatting and we agree that water (some variation of it) is one of the few substances humans can’t live without.
We can manufacture synthetic foods. We can’t manufacture synthetic water.
We can make other beverages (like soft drinks and alcohol) but we need actual water at some point in the process (to grow the plants used for the beverage, etc.).
I suspect water will remain a valuable resource for humans in the future.

Muse Food – Birds And Beings In The Sky
One of the (many) things I’m very conscious of when I write stories set on alien planets is…
There would be activity in the sky also.
Look at the Earth. There is SO much livable sky above us. And birds and butterflies and other lifeforms take advantage of that space.
These birds were spotted off a beach in Florida, USA.
And here is one of their buddies. (grins)
The space above an alien planet would likely be utilized also. If the planet was rich in resources, the skies would likely be quite crowded with lifeforms.

Grin And Bare Him And The Divining Branch
In Grin And Bare Him, Mohini, the heroine, uses something she calls the divining branch. It resembles a three-pronged stick and it draws the moisture from everything around it.
This is a nod to a very real Earth practice called dowsing or divining. Three-pronged sticks or metal rods are held, one prong in each hand with the third prong facing outward. These divining rods vibrate in the direction of water, certain metals and other items.
People have been using divining rods since…well…before written history. It is an ancient practice. There is no scientific proof dowsing or divining works but there is much in this wonderful world we don’t truly understand.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord’s Return
One of the many things I love about Warlord’s Return is… it takes us full circle.
The first story in the series, Warlord Sky, begins with the Chamele warriors returning to their home planet after a visit to the Refuge.
This final story in the series begins with the Chamele warriors leaving their home planet for a visit to the Refuge.
This story also bridges series. The Refuge is the home of the heroes and heroines from the Refuge/Dark Thoughts series. The Chamele stories reside in the Chamele Barbarian Warlords series.
