59.23 million people died on this wonderful planet in 2020 ( https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/number-of-deaths-per-year ). This doesn’t come as much of a surprise to me as I tend to watch the news. The focus of the news is on deaths, usually unusual deaths. Loss seems to be everywhere, according to that programming.
139.88 million people were born on Earth, however ( https://knoema.com/atlas/topics/Demographics/Fertility/Number-of-births ). That’s well over TWICE the number of deaths. Babies are being born all around us. Yet I can’t recall the last time the news focused on the beginning of a human life.
I remember that when I question the worth of humanity. There is more land devoted to growing things than waging war. There are more people giving to others than taking from folks. There is more sharing of truths than telling of lies. There is more good than bad.
We should be aware of the bad in the world. If it is at all possible, we should try to make things better.
But we should also look for the good. It is everywhere.
