Promising Young Woman And The Right Ending For A Story
Spoiler Alert: This post will contain spoilers about Promising Young Woman. If you haven’t yet watched this wonderful yet so-NOT-a-romance-ending movie, consider skipping this post.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I watched Promising Young Woman and we both enjoyed it. It was clear why it had won an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The writing was tight and fresh and the heroine’s character arc was well-formed.
Promising Young Woman deals with rape. If you have any sort of triggers around that type of violence, avoid this movie.
Despite the dark topic and a strong social message, it contained humor and was extremely entertaining. I couldn’t stop watching it and I loved the ending, which is unusual for me because…
This movie does NOT have a Romance Novel ending.
At all.
Normally, I want happy endings in the books I read and the movies I watch. But with Promising Young Woman, a happy ending would have been a cheat. It wouldn’t have fit with the story and with the reality of any female-facing person watching the movie. We wouldn’t have believed it.
There IS justice, however. And that was extremely satisfying to see.
A high price was paid for that justice. That aligns with what female-facing people expect also. The heroine was fighting a society and systems that favor male-facing people. Heavily. We know, from the beginning, it will be a struggle for the lead character in Promising Young Woman to get any sort of closure.
It happens but with great sacrifice.
Was a happy ending possible for the heroine?
Of course, it was. She deserved happiness and love. Everyone deserves happiness and love. But she couldn’t have obtained that happy ending without giving up her main goal. And that would have destroyed the movie.
Not every heroic character is destined for a happy ever after.
Before writing a new story, I always ask myself, “Can this character achieve their primary goal AND also have a romantic happy ever after?”
Sometimes, I can’t figure out a way to accomplish this. If that is the situation, I park the story idea to the side and work on something else. I only write Romance and romantic happy ever afters or happy for nows are a must in this wonderful genre. I’ll return to the story when or if I can secure that ending.

Throwback Thursday – Warlord’s Bounty
Each of the three Warlord brothers ruling the Chamele sector has their own specialty. Khan, the hero of Warlord’s Bounty, is the warrior. He prefers to take action and he really enjoys killing. Any relationship he has will be extremely physical.
Which suits Zeta, his gerel, as she is also a take action type of being. She’s a bounty hunter determined to capture Khan. What she doesn’t realize is… he WANTS to be captured.
Warlord’s Bounty
Wanted: One Barbarian Warrior.
The bigger the bounty, the more dangerous the target.
Khan, a Chamele Warlord, has a huge bounty on his head. His enemy wants him captured and is offering any being in the universe an outrageous number of credits to accomplish that.
Khan wants to be captured, but only if the being apprehending him is a tiny, brown-eyed female with wickedly sharp daggers and an even sharper tongue. His passion for the feisty human can’t be inhibited by restraints. He’ll allow her to subdue him…in a variety of enticing ways.
When she finally collects her credits, he’ll collect his revenge, killing his enemy and claiming his little bounty hunter forever.
Zeta doesn’t do forever. After a lifespan of chasing dangerous beings across galaxies, apprehending and trading them for credits, she doesn’t get involved emotionally…with anyone.
Khan might be fierce and sexy and the most dominant male she has ever encountered, but the barbarian is also her target, and once she sates herself with his body, she’ll betray him.
That’s her job.

Baring Grudge And Quietly Doing Good
Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, has dedicated her lifespan to making the universe a better place.
A stranger wouldn’t know that when they first met her. She flings around f-bombs like they’re futuristic confetti. She growls and snaps at everyone. She keeps her charitable doings super quiet.

Baring Grudge And Learning To Fly
I’m a terrible driver. (I don’t pay attention to the road.) And I haven’t driven in decades but I do have my license. I did ‘unlock’ that achievement. (grins)
Because, here on Earth, learning to drive is often a teenage rite of passage. It is an event that signals increased independence. Once we can drive and we have access to a car, we can go almost anywhere.
In space, the equivalent is learning to fly a ship. In Baring Grudge, Taelyn, the heroine, teaches Jasny, her protégé. Taelyn believes she hasn’t many moments of living left and she wants the girl to both have that skill and associate learning that skill with her.
And for Jasny, the experience IS magical and it is transformative. We see her gaining confidence with every passing moment behind the controls. I love that!

Baring Grudge And Long-Distance Relationships
Grudge and Taelyn have a long-distance relationship for part of Baring Grudge. Grudge remains on the Humanoid Alliance space station. Taelyn returns to her adopted home planet.
They communicate constantly during this separation, learning a lot about each other, what they like, how they think. The distance forces them to put aside their all-consumingly hot physical attraction and focus on their intellectual attraction.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were long-distance early in our relationship. We were attending two different universities in two difference cities.
It was tough. I fully admit that. But we talked every day for hours and we uncovered so much about each other. That gave us a super solid base and when we finally were in the same city, we knew we could get through anything life threw at us.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – September 5th
I set Needing Valor, the December thank you short story, aside and spent the entire week with the Dear Wonderful Hubby. We didn’t do anything super exciting but we were together and that is always fun.
The Dear Wonderful Hubby makes me laugh and he seems to find me hilarious. (grins) He has a weakness for terrible jokes and I’m the master of those as you all know. Bad puns are my specialty.
This upcoming week, I’m returning to Needing Valor with fresh eyes. I expect it to be sent to my Awesome Editor by the 15th.

Welcome To September!
Woot! It is September.
September, for me, will always be tied to back to school (even though I haven’t attended a formal school for decades – grins). I LOVE shopping for new pens and notebooks and other ‘school’ supplies in September. I like to see what all the little kiddies are wearing or are excited about, hear their chatter as they trek to school. It fills me with joy.
September comes from the Latin word septem, which means seven. It was once the seventh month of the Roman calendar. It is now the ninth month but the name was never changed.

Taelyn, the heroine of Baring Grudge, is a warrior. She might not fight beings on a battlefield but she does blow up the enemies’ space stations.
Medic Neidan, her guardian, is a warrior. She heals beings, doesn’t kill them but she is still bravely fighting her own battles against an often cruel and hurtful universe.
You are a warrior also. Right now, you might be fighting to ensure you and your loved ones are safe from the pandemic. You might be battling to keep a roof over your head or to get through the day or to carve out a bit of happiness in a rather dark world.

Throwback Thursday – Seeking Vector
Vector, the Captain of the Reckless, and Kasia, his hacker female, will definitely make an appearance in Seizing Power, the fifth and final core story in the Rebel Cyborgs series (releasing in February).
There is tremendous tension between Vector and Power. That is illustrated in Seeking Vector, Vector and Kasia’s story. Vector has his own distinct view of honor. He also has secrets, secrets Kasia uncovers and keeps safe.

Vector, the C Model captain of the Freedom, is a cyborg many warriors wish to emulate. He fights fiercely, leads with honor, has earned the respect and loyalty of his crew. But no being, not even a cyborg, is perfect. Since arriving at the Homeland, Vector has been hiding a dark truth about his past. If his secret is exposed, he could lose everything – his position, his ship, and his life.
Kasia excels at uncovering secrets. Half a lifespan ago, her curiosity placed her on the Humanoid Alliance’s kill list. Now she has accessed information the cyborg council would prefer remain hidden. Their warriors are hunting her and won’t rest until she’s dead.
When Vector arrives on her battle station, all grim determination, gray skin, and bulging muscles, Kasia knows he has been sent to kill her. That doesn’t stop her from wanting the dominant cyborg. Godzilla vs. Kong And Communicating Without Dialogue
Spoiler Alert: This post might contain spoilers around the 2021 movie Godzilla vs. Kong. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip the post.
I LOVE Godzilla. I also love Kong. I was super stoked to finally watch this movie.
Godzilla vs. Kong has its issues. You might wish to suspend all logic and knowledge of basic science while watching this movie. I went into the viewing merely expecting a good time and some awesome monster fight scenes and I was happy.
Godzilla vs. Kong is also set in the MonsterVerse (the same series as Skull Island) and it is helpful (yet not essential) to have watched the previous movies. Many of the characters (including Kong and Godzilla, of course) return.
One of the things I REALLY love about this movie is how the two main stars – Godzilla and Kong – communicate without speaking. They don’t rely on dialogue to express their thoughts and feelings. Kong works a little harder to communicate with the humans but when the two monsters are together, their expressions and body language are sufficient.
There is a scene at the end of the movie where the two monsters are facing each other. We scan to Godzilla, then to Kong, and back again and we know exactly what they’re thinking from their eyes (and their brows) and their stances. They move from “I’m going to beat you into the pavement” (fists clenched, bodies rigid and tilted forward, brows lowered) to “Would that effort be worth it?” (leaning slightly backward, raised brows, released fingers) to “I can’t be bothered to fight you at this time” (slumped shoulders, relaxed stance, brows at normal placement).
It is a scene I’ll study, dissect and learn from. I’ll use that knowledge in my future stories to reinforce the dialogue or perhaps to replace it completely.

Baring Grudge

Before she departs, she’ll experience one toe-curling moment of hatred-edged passion with her handsome foe. She’ll show him how skilled with detonations she truly is. He will have his universe rocked.
Then she’ll disappear.
Her cyborg, however, has no intention of ever letting her go.
