Throwback Thursday – Choosing Chuckles
Choosing Chuckles in the first official story in the Cyborg Space Exploration series (I always believe Seeking Vector was the first unofficial story but it resides officially in the Cyborg Sizzle series). It features Chuckles, a grumpy and damaged cyborg warrior, and Bettina, aka Bait, a colorful human female who is seeking to trap him.
Choosing Chuckles resides in the grumpy one is secretly sweet for the sunshine one trope. Chuckles grumbles and snarls at everyone yet he stealthily takes care of the beings he loves. And he is super protective.
Bettina is a strong female who is tired of being strong all the time. She wants someone to take care of her, to pamper her and protect her. When she talks to Chuckles over the communication lines, she knows in her heart he’s that male.
Chuckles and Bettina are magical together. We explore an exciting new planet inhabited by highly intelligent monkey-like beings. There are some laughs and tears and heart-melting moments.

A Cynical Cyborg Meets A Bad, Bad Female.

Bettina, aka Bait, works with a team of females, snaring sexual predators in space, seizing their ships and transporting them to primitive planets. As soon as she speaks with Chuckles, she knows he’s not like the others. He has honor, is a being worthy of respect, of caring.

Keeping Skills Honed
I take, on average, one writing craft workshop a month.
This surprises some newer writers. I’ve been published for well over a decade, have been writing since I could hold a pencil, have hit the USA Today Bestseller List a few times.
Why would I continue to take craft courses?
I do this because skills can always be improved and I find it fun to add to the tools in my writer toolbox. I think readers deserve the best d@mn stories I can produce. Some stories can only be told using certain skills, skills I might not yet have.
And these courses are food for my muse. It excites me to hear how other writers tackles issues, how they think differently than I do. It draws me out of my own head, allows me to see problems from a different angle.
If the workshop host offers a critique (Angela Knight often does this with the workshops she gives), I always submit a sample of the story I’m currently working on. Getting a new perspective on it is often priceless. The feedback strengthens the entire story.
I whole-heartedly recommend writers continue to take workshops. Every writer is different. The workshops might not benefit you as they benefit me. But it is worth a try.

Exploring Outside The Cyborg Controlled Sector
In Cyborg Space Exploration, the crew of the Reckless (led by Vector) was charged with exploring the cyborg-controlled sector, the stretch of space that surrounds the Homeland and is under their protection. The cyborgs decide (mostly) who enters the sector.
In Rebel Cyborgs, we will, of course, visit Mercury Minor. This is the Rebel Cyborgs’ home base. The planet is located inside the cyborg-controlled sector.
But we will also explore planets outside the sector. Cadet’s primary mission is to retrieve cyborgs who weren’t able to escape the Humanoid Alliance (and others) on their own and transport them to the cyborg-controlled sector, where they will hopefully be safe (or safer).
I’m super excited about this! I LOVE exploring new planets.

Cynthia Sax Weekly Update – February 15th
Last week was super productive for me.
I completed the first round revisions for Under Strain, the second Rebel Cyborgs story (releasing in May). My Awesome Editor gave the story two thumbs up. There IS work still to do on it. There is always work to do. (grins) But we (my editor and I) will definitely hit that May deadline and I think you will really love this story.
I also finished the Griffin Shifter Short (er) Story for the Medieval Beast Shifters omnibus. This should release at the end of March under C.S. Sax, my quirky short story writing pen name.
I will be getting that collection together this week (sending it to the Dear Wonderful Hubby, my awesome volunteer formatter).
AND I will be starting on the third Rebel Cyborgs story, Baring Grudge. Grudge likes to blow up things so I suspect his story will be explosive. (grins) Yeah, that was a terrible pun, wasn’t it?

Writing Weekends
I receive quite a few awesome questions about my schedule. One of the major misconceptions is, as an established writer (i.e. a writer with numerous books released and years of publishing behind me), I must take weekends off.
(laughs until my stomach hurts)
That is a big nope.
My Dear Wonderful Hubby currently has a fairly traditional job schedule. When I first met him, he was working three jobs. Right now, he works one job Monday to Friday (the hours are long, however).
I’ve never not worked on the weekends. Reader promotional events (all virtual for me) often happen on Saturdays and Sundays. I love to attend these get-togethers, be part of the happy chaos in Romancelandia.
When I was a full-time business babe, in addition to being a writer, the weekend was also my primary time for fresh writing. Saturdays and Sundays would often be longer workdays than my weekdays.
Writing is a lot of fun, is one of the best jobs on the planet, but it still requires showing up, completing tasks, being semi-awake. (laughs)
Now that I write full-time, my weekends are a bit more relaxed. The marketing part stays the same, as does the business part, but I usually cut my writing/revising schedule in half. That gives me more awesome time for reading and goofing around with the Dear Wonderful Hubby.
This is the schedule I need now to do all the things I want to do. Other writers take weekends off writing/revising. Or they might work harder on weekends.
I don’t know many established writers, however, that don’t do anything writing/publishing related on the weekends. As I mentioned, that is often when reader events happen.
If you’re writing this weekend, know that you’re not alone.

I’ve received some awesome messages from reading buddies asking me when the rest of the Rebel Cyborgs series will be available for pre-order.
First, THANK YOU. The excitement you have for this series feeds my enthusiasm about it and that is such a blast for any writer. A pre-order is also an act of trust. You trust that I will give you a great story. And I would never knowingly betray that trust.
Which is why I don’t yet have the other stories available for pre-order.
Under Strain can be pre-ordered. I’ve completed the first (of three or more) rounds of revisions on this second story (releasing in May). My Awesome Editor is excited about this story, which gives me confidence you’ll enjoy it also.
I’m hopefully starting Baring Grudge next week (the first scene is in my head right now and it is AWESOME). It isn’t anywhere near the stage where I can say it is worthy of your pre-order. I suspect it will be a great story but I don’t like to list stories at booksellers until I have, at the very least, written the first draft. That should happen by the end of March.

Throwback Thursday – Dark Thoughts
Valentine’s Day is on Sunday. I don’t know why but, when buddies ask me which of my stories they should read on Valentine’s Day, I always mention Dark Thoughts first.
Yes, Kralj, the enemy-eating, all powerful, all knowing ruler, is top of mind for this love it or hate it celebration. (laughs) I think it is because I associate red with Valentine’s Day and there is a LOT of red in this story. Blood is spilled. Crimson sprays are everywhere.
Kralj’s relationship with Dita, his tiny yet fierce human assassin, is so very special. They have their own views of romance (it often involves ending lifespans) and they are magical as a couple.
Can love redeem a monster?
The Refuge is home to some of the most violent beings in the universe. Kralj, its leader, reigns over the remote outpost with terrifying ease, ruthlessly squashing any rumors of rebellion, killing anyone who breaks his rules. Primitive, deadly, powerful, he’s a monster, scarred both on his face and his soul. He has never met a being he couldn’t control.
Until he meets her.
Dita has one mission—to kill the three targets claiming sanctuary within the Refuge. Or so she claims. For the first time in his long lifespan, Kralj isn’t certain of another being’s intentions. Containing Malice And Conflict From Within
The primary conflict in the Rebel Cyborgs series is between the Rebel Cyborgs and the Cyborg Council or, more specifically, between Cadet and Power, two extremely strong-willed beings.
Cadet feels their top priority should be rescuing the cyborgs who were left behind during the mass rebellion. She has both public and private reasons for viewing this as their number one mission.
Power is dealing with an overly crowded Homeland and millions of bored warriors (which is NEVER a good situation – grins). He has other priorities. He also has private (heart-twisting) reasons for not wanting to send crews of freed warriors to rescue their still captured and controlled brethren.
Power, although the arrogant a$$ acts otherwise, isn’t a perfect being or a perfect leader. He SHOULD have some push back on his decisions. There SHOULD be some conflict between him and others. That’s good and healthy and needed.
It does create tension within the cyborg forces, however.
There are other sources of conflict. The Humanoid Alliance, although currently in shambles, is still out there. They remain a threat to the cyborgs and they are plotting not-so-good things, bringing warriors back from the dead and working on equally horrifying projects.
But, in the Rebel Cyborgs series, the big conflict is cyborg-centric.

This tormented cyborg craves vengeance…and her.

Malice, a C Model cyborg, has spent his long lifespan enslaved by the Humanoid Alliance. His cruel manufacturers have hurt him in all the ways a male could be hurt.
His enemy has now added a new weapon to their arsenal—a tiny human medic with soft hands and a delectable scent. She experiments on him multiple times a shift, delivering pain…and frustration.
He wants her. He also seeks retribution.
Once Malice frees himself, he plans to achieve both of his goals, taking Medic Illona captive and ending her research…permanently.
Illona is as much a prisoner as the cyborgs she experiments on. Since her arrival at the Human Alliance’s secret laboratory, she has carefully, stealthily, crafted a plot to free her test subjects. To conceal her covert activities, the medic has been forced to harm beings rather than heal them.
The being she has damaged the most is also the cyborg she fiercely desires— Malice, a huge, gray-skinned, blue-eyed C Model with massive hands and a voice deeper than space. He hates her, has good reason to do so, and, when he’s freed, there’s a high probability he’ll kill her.
Illona will take that risk to ensure he survives.

Containing Malice And Reader Feedback
I read all the messages I receive from reading buddies. Some writers have assistants. I don’t have one. I look at everything myself.
Unless the message is a death threat or something similar, I try to respond to every message.
If you don’t receive a message from me, it is likely because an email service, either mine or yours, in their great wisdom (<–extreme sarcasm), decided either to not deliver your original message to me or to not deliver my reply to you. (shakes head) That unfortunately happens…quite often, especially with Gmail.
I LOVE questions and other feedback about stories. If you have a question or concern, there is a good chance other reading buddies have the same question or concern. Sometimes I’ll answer that question or address that concern on this blog, in addition to responding to you directly. That sharing benefits everyone.
I also often tweak my writing a bit to decrease confusion in future stories.
In Containing Malice, for example, some reading buddies were unsettled that Illona didn’t have a conversation with Malice about her Humanoid Alliance-caused illness, about their experiments on her. They’re right. That communication should have happened. In the future, I’ll ensure couples (or more) have conversations about important things like that.
I want to give you the best story I possibly can. (big hugs) That’s super important to me. And your feedback allows me to do this.
