Many of us will be in lockdowns over the winter holidays. In my corner of the universe, we can’t meet with people from outside our households. We’re lucky to have two people in our household (the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I are the humans in our home). Some households have only one person in them.
One physical person.
Readers like you and I have hundreds, perhaps thousands of characters in our households. They formally sit on our shelves but they often also reside in our heads.
When I was younger, I would read to a wonderful woman in a long term care home. She had been blind for decades but was quickly losing her hearing.
I asked her if she was scared. She would be cut off from others, would be alone.
She smiled at me. “Readers are never alone, my love. We have thousands of friends living up in here.” She tapped her forehead. “I’ll simply be spending more time with them. We’ll have grand adventures and good long chats.”
I remember her words whenever I feel lonely. I’ll look over my bookshelf (virtual and physical) and I’ll choose a dear friend to spend time with. And I don’t feel alone anymore.
