I sat down (virtually) with Ashley Ladd for a short interview. Today is the release day for Ashley Ladd’s Pretend Lover, a MF Paranormal Erotic.
Cynthia Sax: What makes Gage sexy?
Ashley Ladd: Gage is an ex-Army sergeant/now bartender and college student who is very well built and very tough on the outside but warm and friendly on the inside. He’s deeply in love with Rachel, but biding his time until she’s ready to let romance back into her life. Until that time, he’s willing to be her best friend and study partner.
Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Pretend Lover?
Ashley Ladd: My publisher Totally Bound put out a call for hotel stories for their new line. As I was brainstorming I saw a news story about a parent complaining about a furry convention that was staying in the same hotel as his daughter’s cheerleading convention. The parent thought it inappropriate that the hotel book the two conventions at the same time, exposing the children to the horrible furries. Although that isn’t the crux of the story it added an interesting dimension.
I also looked in on a couple hotel workers’ Facebook boards to get ideas of what happens in hotels.
Cynthia Sax: How does Pretend Lover start?
Ashley Ladd: A Baptist convention leader complains to Rachel about the lawless, unchristian furries running amok around the hotel ruining her convention. In the midst of this, Rachel’s ex-husband and his new wife (the woman who broke up Rachel’s marriage) show up for the furry convention on their honeymoon – and also because Rachel’s ex is a furry con artist and enthusiast. The new wife accuses Rachel that she’s unable to get a man of her own and warns her to stay away from her husband. To save her sanity and her reputation, Rachel asks her new best friend Gage to pretend to be her boyfriend/lover. Gage agrees, jumping at the chance to be close to Rachel as he wants to be her real boyfriend.
Cynthia Sax: Where is Pretend Lover set?
Ashley Ladd: Pretend Lover is set in San Francisco, California. I honeymooned in San Francisco and I think it’s just about the most romantic city on earth—second only to Saginaw Island, Michigan perhaps. It’s a gorgeous city with a lot of character and depth.

First Scene From Sinful Rewards 9

This is the first scene from Sinful Rewards 9 (releasing March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day). It sets the tone for this action-packed installment.
Dreams have always been my refuge from the judgmental world. They’re nightly pockets of happiness I anticipate during the day and cling to every morning.
Tonight is different. Nightmares chase me, my visions gruesome and dark, filled with explosions and flying shrapnel and images of Hawke in increasingly intense levels of pain.
I try to be a good soldier, putting pressure on his gushing wounds and sewing hunks of skin together, my hands shaking, my mouth dry. My efforts aren’t enough to save him. Hawke dies again and again, each loss tearing at my sanity.
After I fail to keep him alive for the fourth heartbreaking time, there’s a moment of sorrow-laden silence. I bow my head and grieve for him, for the future we’ll never have.
Another explosion rocks my imagined world. My eyes burn from the smoke and ash. I blink away my tears, dreading what I’ll see.
The cloud of concealing gray clears. Hawke writhes on the war-torched ground, his face twisted in agony, his body battered. He reaches bloody fingers out to me, a wordless request for my help.
My gaze drops. Oh, God. He has no legs, his blue jeans jaggedly torn, sprays of vivid crimson arcing from his severed limbs.
“Hold on, Hawke.” I rush to his side, broken glass crunching under my shoes. “I’ll save you.” I can do this. Francois, my French friend, shared how he saved his friend after one horrific battle. I unbuckle Hawke’s belt and slide the black leather from the loops on his jeans. “Shit.” There’s only one belt and he needs two tourniquets.
Hawke moans, the sound pulling at my heart. The puddle of blood encircling him grows larger, coating my ballerina flats.
My big man fights me as I attempt to encircle both of his thick thighs. “Stop moving,” I order. The leather slips once, twice, three times, before it finds purchase. I tighten the loop. This doesn’t stem the bleeding.
With every pulse, every spurt of lost blood, his efforts to escape me lessen. “Stay with me.” My voice cracks with emotion. Sweat drips down my spine, my shoulders aching. His heartbeat is loud, sound distorted in my dream, and the boom, boom, boom is slowing. “Don’t leave me.” My fear and panic builds. I have to save him and I don’t know how.
His heart stops, the stillness terrifying. “Hawke,” I scream, thumping on his T-shirt-covered chest with my dirty fists, trying to revive him. “Hawke.”
“I’m here.” Rough hands grip my shoulders, plucking me from my nightmare. “You’re safe, love.” I’m pressed against a wall of warm flesh. “I have you.” Hawke nuzzles his face in my hair, his breath wafting on my skin.

“You’ll be safe in the building,” he assures me, not realizing it’s his safety I’m concerned about.
“I know.” I link my fingers with his. His palms are huge, his tanned skin marked with silver scars and calluses. My hands are smaller, slender, pale, and soft. “I still want to look at the footage.” I walk with Hawke toward the door. He shortens his stride to match mine. “I realize I’m not part of your team, but I want to help you.” I need to do something to protect him or I’ll go insane.
“I’d appreciate that help.” Hawke gazes down at me. “Being part of my team implies you report to me, sweetheart.” His eyes glow with emotion. “You don’t.” He brushes a strand of hair behind my right ear, grazing my cheek with his rough fingertips, sending delicious tremors over me. “You’re my partner.”
Oh, God, he knows what I long to hear. “Come here, partner.” I grasp his shoulders, trying to lower his lips to a kissable level.
Hawke dips his head and captures my mouth. I part my lips, eager to taste him, touch him, and he slides his tongue along mine. I suck, pulling on the tip, taking him inside me. He groans and grips my hips, drawing my curves into his muscle, flattening my breasts against his chest.
When we kiss, caress, mesh together, the rest of the world disappears. I fit as I’ve never fit before, merging with him, belonging, perfect and right. Hawke’s stubble grazes my chin, heating me down to my damaged toe. His fingers span across my lower back, his hold on me protective and sure.

“I arrive at a fancy red carpet event in a long black limousine.” My eyelids lower slightly as I envision the event. “I’m wearing diamonds around my neck.” I skim my fingertips over my skin. “I sparkle.”

“It’s a designer purse, not a big bag.” I’ll have to sell that one-of-a-kind purse to pay the bills. My joy dims, reality intruding on my fantasy. “Everyone I know is attending this event,” I doggedly continue. “They’re dressed in their finest and no one has to work. There are no customers to serve. Everyone is happy. They’re not worried about money or the future or where they’ll sleep that night, and they welcome me. I’m one of them.”
