I snapped these photos of a dancer at a Vegas club. She reminds me SO much of Bee, the heroine from Sinful Rewards. She has long brown hair, brown eyes, has a slender build. She’s also vertically challenged. (grins) She’s wearing super high-heeled boots and only takes up a fraction of the frame.

This Vegas dancer looks like Bee
It’s my turn to dance. I peek between the red velvet curtains, excitement shimmering over my bare arms and legs. The stage is quiet and dark, the spotlight focused on the all-male audience. Many of the men seated at the tables appear familiar. I’ve glimpsed their faces on the bus or city streets. My fingers tremble, entwining with the curtain’s fringe. Tonight, they’ll watch me, lust after me, but only one man will have me.
That man lounges in a chair positioned in front of the stage. The lights shine on Hawke’s short brown hair. Stubble covers his tanned cheeks. He’s dressed all in black, his leather jacket partially concealing his T-shirt-covered chest, his jeans the darkest dark. He’s big and fierce and I will make him mine.
I’ll dance for Hawke, showing him why he should desire me and no one else, why he should stay and never leave. He’ll no longer drift from town to town, from job to job, avoiding commitment. I’ll be good enough, sexy enough, worthy of his love, of his forever. He’ll care too much to ever abandon me.
A pulse of sound breaks the eerie silence, a low-drumming tempo echoing the pounding of my heart, the bass felt down to my toes. This club beat grows louder and louder, the rhythm fierce, tribal, sexy. Streams of blue light crisscross the stage, illuminating the audience. Men stamp their feet and pound the wooden tabletops with their fists, voicing their demands.
She's also vertically challenged!
They want me. Anticipation tightens my nipples, the taut flesh pressing against the white lace of my bra. They want me to dance for them, to strip off my clothes, to reveal every inch of my body.
Eager to give my audience what they clamor for, I push through the curtains and strut on stage, my head held high, one rhinestone-covered shoe placed in front of the other, my spindly heels ringing on the wood, the tempo matching the thumping bass of my music.
The audience goes wild, hooting and hollering. They like what they see. My sheer white babydoll billows behind me, my skimpy lace bra and G-string panties showing through the fabric. My hair, pulled into a high ponytail, bounces against my shoulders. My hips sway and my breasts jiggle.
Hawke leans forward, open admiration lighting his rugged face. As I pass his chair, I flick the hem of my babydoll, giving him a glimpse of my tight ass. He inhales sharply, the sound heard over the music. Men whistle their appreciation.
I stride to the edge of the stage, pivot, and retrace my steps. Hawke watches me, his gaze on my bare legs, his pale blue eyes shining. He knows I’m returning to him. He knows he’s the man I dance for.

Entry Level Jobs
Bee’s (from Sinful Rewards) first job after graduation is a temporary role in a charity. She addresses invitations and coordinates reminder notices for the high net worth donors. I held this role in a real charity years ago. High net worth donors contribute about 80% of the donations (the 80-20 rule) and they expect special attention.
This isn’t her dream job, very few of us luck into these roles right away, but it does appeal to her for a couple of different reasons. One of the reasons is that there is a possibility of landing a full time position. Bee wishes to belong, to have a permanent home and a permanent job. Securing the full time job will not only allow her to continuing helping her mom financially but it will also give her this emotional stability.
This role gives her an in with Chicago high society. The ball will be attended by the famous and the wealthy. As a permanent employee, she would work the event and meet some of these important people. She’d be known.
Employees at a charity are viewed very differently than employees at other companies. Many socialites and children of the wealthy volunteer with charities. The attendees don’t assume employees are working at the charity because they need the income. Employees are less likely to be viewed as less than, one of Bee’s fears.
The location appeals to Bee. Every morning, on the way to work, she strolls down the Magnificent Mile, Chicago’s fashion Mecca, surrounded by the styles and brands she loves.
Landing the full time job would also be the seal of approval, the proof of worth she yearns for. She wouldn’t be the unwanted child of the wild woman of Happydale, a woman no one wishes to befriend. She’d be the best (even though she only has one rival for the position).

Time For A Slow Burn
Sinful Rewards is a 12 novella serial, approximately 1,200 pages or three 400 page novels. When Avon Impulse approached me about this exciting novella per month idea, I was THRILLED. I could finally tell one of the huge stories I have rattling around my brain.
Of course, I wanted to write a love triangle. Love triangles require quite a few pages. If the heroine changes her mind from one man to the other and perhaps back again too quickly, she appears flaky, unable to maintain a lasting relationship.
But I also wanted to write the friendship to love emotional arc. Yes, Hawke falls in insta-lust, having the hots for Bee, our heroine, immediately. That’s exciting and sexy and happens quite often in both erotic romances and life.
Nicolas, our mysterious billionaire, however, has a more cautious personality. He doesn’t trust easily and he doesn’t move quickly. He takes years, sometimes decades, developing the tracts of land he buys. He’s as careful with romantic relationships. When he falls in love, it will be forever.
And the wonderful thing about having 1,200 pages is I can tell the story from Nicolas meeting Bee for the first time to becoming friends to perhaps becoming more. I have the space.
But does Nicolas have the time? That’s the biggest issue. Will Bee be waiting for him once he’s moved through the stages? Will she choose our cautious billionaire? Or will she choose Hawke, our tattooed former marine? Their relationship is as complex and exciting. Or is there a third possibility?

Should Heroes Use Endearments?
There was a discussion on a reader loop a couple of weeks ago about whether or not heroes should use endearments for their heroines. Some readers love this. Some readers don’t.
For me, this choice is as individual as the heroes I’m writing about. Nicolas, one of the heroes in Sinful Rewards, doesn’t use endearments, at least not quickly and not in public. He’s a private man. He doesn’t talk much. He’s aware that not everyone wishes him well. He wouldn’t expose his feelings and his heroine’s safety by using an endearment.
Hawke, on the other hand, calls Bee ‘love’ and ‘sweetheart’ during their very first conversation. He continues to sprinkle their subsequent discussions with these endearments, as illustrated in this snippet.
“Expect more offers. I can be a persistent pain in the ass, especially when it comes to pretty little women with long brown hair and big brown eyes.” One corner of Hawke’s lips lifts upward, giving me a glimpse of white teeth. “And love?”
“Yeah?” I pause, wondering why I’m answering to this endearment. I’m not anyone’s love—not his, not Nicolas’s—not yet.
Bee doesn’t find Hawke’s endearments…well…endearing. It drives her crazy that he treats the word ‘love’ so casually, that he’d call a stranger this. His pet names for her cause more conflict than affection. She feels that it’s almost as though he’s mocking her most cherished dream – to be someone’s love.
I personally love it when men, both in romance novels and in real life, use endearments for their loved ones. I get a thrill when my dear wonderful hubby is out with the guys, I phone him, and he calls me ‘love’ in front of his buddies. It not only is a declaration of his feelings but it also tells the world how confident he is. It is very much an alpha male move. My real life hero cares more about what his heroine thinks than what his buddies think.

Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Beneath the Pages?
Jennifer Kacey: The last line. “He growled in her ear as the guys moved toward her. “Good girl.” Just that handful of words says it all. His dominance, what she’s been aching to hear, what’s about to happen. It’s so delicious and wicked and I literally get goose bumps every time I read it. All the way up to the top of my head. I kid you not. And I have to read it out loud too. In a whisper. SO YUMMY!
Cynthia Sax: Does a character in Beneath the Pages have a secret?
Jennifer Kacey: YES!!! Radigan, my hero, he’s a Dom. As in a Dom with a capital HELLO SEXY MAN! But he’s also a famous actor. He can’t reveal who he really is underneath the glitz and stardom. But to Acacia, he can’t hold back. But who is she? None other than the heiress to a magazine where she makes a living convincing the rich and famous to reveal it all. Oy vay!
Cynthia Sax: Is Beneath the Pages a series and will you be writing more stories in this series?
Jennifer Kacey: Originally no. It was going to be stand-alone and that’s it, BUT from the people who read the ARC I’ve been…uhh…threatened with bodily harm if I don’t write a companion novella at the very least and pick it up EXACTLY where I left off Beneath the Pages.
Cynthia Sax: What do you love about writing contemporary romance?
Jennifer Kacey: I can make everything perfect. How people fight, what they say, things I WISH I’d said in a similar situation. OMG and that I write in people I’m not fond of and change the names of the guilty (cause you know they are) and have all sorts of dastardly things happen to them. Or I at least get to call them an asshole publicly even if no one knows about it but me. SO CATHARTIC!!!

Interview With Margaret L. Carter
I sat down (virtually) with Margaret L. Carter for a short interview. Margaret L. Carter’s latest release is Sealing the Dark Portal, an intriguing Paranormal Romance.
Cynthia Sax: What makes Cam so freakin’ sexy?
Margaret L. Carter: Cam is a cat shapeshifter. He has three forms: Human; a tawny, longhaired domestic cat; and a large feline the size and roughly the appearance of a mountain lion. To me, shapeshifters have a numinous allure, and there’s no animal more graceful and sensuous than a cat.
Cynthia Sax: Where did you get the idea for Sealing the Dark Portal?
Margaret L. Carter: The original spark came from the conclusion of Stephen King’s Dark Tower saga. Near the end of the final book (spoiler), a pair of lovers who’ve been through hellish ordeals together with the hero, Roland, find themselves together in New York. The man doesn’t remember his former life in Roland’s world, and it’s implied the woman will quickly forget, too. They will have a happy life together, free of the horrible memories of the past. Suppose, I wondered, something happened to disrupt that new life? So I created a heroine in that situation; the hero, however, has a complete memory of their past together in the world they came from. Of course, the trope of magically imposed false memories has been used by many fantasy authors, but it’s that scene from THE DARK TOWER that inspired me in this particular case. I gave the terrors that haunt my characters Lovecraftian elements because I’ve had a lifelong fondness for Lovecraft-style horror (although I don’t at all share his bleak philosophy of a mindless, uncaring universe).
Cynthia Sax: Does a character in Sealing the Dark Portal have a secret?
Margaret L. Carter: Definitely! The heroine, Rina, even has a secret from herself. She was sent from her home world to ours with her authentic memories wiped and overwritten by the constructed memory of living an ordinary life in Maryland. The hero, Cam, secretly watches over her from the shadows until he’s forced to reveal himself as her bodyguard and try to awaken her true self.
Cynthia Sax: What do you love about writing paranormal romance?
Margaret L. Carter: Although I started as an aspiring horror writer (at age 13), I soon realized that what really interested me was getting inside the mind of the “monster.” The first time I read DRACULA, I wondered how the Count felt about those events in which he was portrayed as the villain. (Fred Saberhagen answers that question in THE DRACULA TAPE, the story I always wanted to write.) One of my first attempts at fiction was a love story between a living man and a ghost. I wrote lots of vampire viewpoint fiction, with vampires as sympathetic characters. Relationships between the human and the nonhuman fascinated me. When paranormal romance became a recognized subgenre, I knew it was the niche I’d been waiting for.

Bee And Cyndi – A Heroine’s Best Friend
I judge people by the friends they have. I think we all do. When I discover that a new acquaintance is a friend of a friend, I’m predisposed to like her. We already have one thing in common – the same great taste in friends.
I judge characters by the friends they have also. If the heroine has no friends, I wonder why. What’s wrong with her? Does she have the skills to build a lasting romantic relationship? If the heroine has a nasty best friend, I wonder why she chooses this person to hang out with. Does she have terrible judgment? Does this terrible judgment extend to her choice of hero?
Bee’s best friend, Cyndi, isn’t perfect. She’s a slut and quite proud about this. She likes everyone, even the not-so-nice people (like Angel – eye roll). But she’s fun and generous and she doesn’t judge Bee.
Cyndi is wealthy and gives Bee some access to that world, a world she desperately wants to belong to. She can afford the fashions Bee loves and, in the past, she’d take Bee on shopping trips, consulting our insecure heroine before she made purchases.
Cyndi needs Bee in other ways. Her dad feels Bee is a good influence on her. Cyndi doesn’t like to sleep alone. When she’s not hooking up with her man of the moment, she sleeps in Bee’s bedroom.
Bee needs to be needed. She likes that Cyndi is messy because her cleaning skills are needed. Cyndi can’t cook, giving Bee another way to contribute to their household. Bee isn’t an equal but she’s not a pity figure either.
Their friendship seems to work for both of them. BUT and this is a big but, it hasn’t yet been tested. Bee worries that when times get tough, Cyndi will abandon her…as her friends have abandoned her in the past.

Cynthia Sax: What makes Travis and Dutch sexy?
Tina Donahue: All of the books in Brought to His Knees are about Alpha males brought down by love. Personally, I can’t think of anything more delicious than a commanding guy who meets his match in a woman he can’t live without.
In Make Me Surrender, Travis and Dutch aren’t looking for love or any kind of commitment. Sweet Mercy waltzes into their lives and they don’t know what hit them. It’s awesome.
Cynthia Sax: What is your favorite line from Make Me Surrender?
Tina Donahue: At the very beginning when Mercy says to Dutch and Travis, “I have a proposition.”

Tina Donahue: It just came to me like all my other stories. I can be grocery shopping, driving, having lunch with friends and suddenly I see scenes in my head and the characters interacting. Basically, I write down what I see and the story progresses from there.

Tina Donahue: The story begins with Travis and Dutch coming into Fast Fill, one of those gas/groceries stores everyone’s familiar with. Mercy works there. She knows there’s an opening in Travis’s saloon and considers it her best chance to work with and be near him and Dutch. Make Me Surrender gets right to the core of Mercy’s greatest desire. She wants these guys badly and is determined to make them notice her once and for all.
