The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I passed this ‘waterfall’ in Japan.
As you likely noticed, the top of it is flat. The ‘rocks’ appear like they’ve been cut directly across.
Because they aren’t rocks.
This is a dam and it originally looked very much like a dam. The surface of it was smooth concrete and was colored a uniform, unnatural gray.
And it was VERY ugly. It didn’t blend into the wonderful greenery around it.
It looked like something the Humanoid Alliance would build.
The dam was recently resurfaced to resemble rock. It looks more natural and blends more into its surroundings. It is something Grin might design.

Muse Food – Fireworks
Watching fireworks always inspires me to write really intense, action-packed space battle scenes.
The sounds of the fireworks detonating, the explosions, the colors, the falling to the ground of the ‘debris’ – it is all awesome muse food.

Muse Food – Black Dragonflies And Expectations
When the Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking around Japan, we spotted quite a few predominantly black dragonflies and butterflies.
At first, we didn’t know what they were.
Because, here in North America, there aren’t many predominantly black dragonflies and butterflies. It isn’t a color we tend to associate with those lifeforms.
But in Japan, they’re common.
We have expectations about quite a few things. School buses are yellow, for example. Spring leaves are green, as another example.
One of the things that makes a place or a planet ‘alien’ is twisting those expectations. The trees on an alien planet might have purple leaves. Or the transport for the kiddies might be bright pink.
This is an easy way to tell readers, “Hey, this place is different!”

Muse Food – Peacocks And Who Does The Courting
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this magnificent peacock in a community in Florida, USA.
This is a peacock, a male. We didn’t take many photos of the peahens, the females, because they are much, MUCH plainer.
We can tell, at a glance, who does the courting in that species. The males put on a grand show. The females sit back and evaluate.
I think about that when I build alien worlds. Who does the courting? Who has to impress their potential mates? How does that change the dynamic or their appearance or their behavior?

The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this one flower growing in an otherwise empty plot.
I suspect the entire plot was sowed with seeds. But only one flower grew.
Why did this one flower survive? Was it luck? Was it the flower version of willpower? Was it genetics? Was it a combination of all of those factors?
When a character is a lone survivor, I wonder why they endured also. What made the difference between life and death for them?

I LOVE maps. They not only give us a great snapshot of the layout of an area but they also reflect what the mapmaker felt was important.
(The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I spotted this replica of an old map on the Norwegian Getaway.)
Military folks want maps that show key military sites. Mountain climbers want maps that show elevations. Folks who are concerned about fresh water supplies want maps that show lakes and rivers and other bodies of water.

Muse Food – Collections
I LOVE looking at other people’s collections. I find that super inspiring.
(This collection was displayed on the Norwegian Getaway.)
I like to hear what started them on collecting that particular thing. There’s usually a great character-telling story behind it. That story is unique to the person and it shows us what they value.
I also like to see the little differences in the items in the collection. That helps me remember to note the little details in objects appearing in my stories. Because those little details make them special. They make them worth ‘collecting.’

Muse Food – Footprints In The Sand
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were wandering along a beach in Florida when we spotted these footprints in the sand.
The person wasn’t nearby. We don’t know who left these indents on the beach. And I doubt they realized their footprints would last long enough for someone else to see them.
But we all leave tracks, don’t we? We change the world around us merely by existing.
This is true for our characters also.
When Grin, a K model cyborg, met Adam, an all-powerful immortal being, in Grin And Bare Him, he set the deity’s expectation of who and what cyborgs are.
When Strive first meets Adam in Strive For Forever (releasing in July), he has to deal with that expectation. Grin had inadvertently impacted his relationship with the being inhabiting his female’s form.
