Maybe one of the cyborg’s beloved offspring successfully ‘borrowed’ a ship and then lost control of it above our planet. They survived the crash because…well…they’re cyborgs and cyborgs are quite durable. Plus any ship a cyborg obtained would be modified to boost safety.

Muse Food – Toppled Trees
The Dear Wonderful Hubby and I were trekking along a path through the forest and we came across this toppled tree.
It was likely toppled during a wind storm.
OR maybe Mohini, the flying-impaired heroine of Grin And Bare Him, clipped it while she was flying her modified freighter over Earth.
OR maybe Balvan, the HUGE green gatekeeper hero of Dark Strength, leaned against it and accidentally flattened the tree.
There are a gazillion ways this tree could have fallen over.
What do you think downed it?

One Step Further
Science Fiction in novel form, movie form, TV form is often held up as predicting current events.
There’s a reason for that.
Many of us in the Science Fiction realm (and yes, Cyborg Romance, Alien Romance and other SciFi Romance is in that realm) take a current development and then ask ourselves, “What if we took this development one step further?”
That step could be in any direction.
Cyborgs, for example, already technically exist. Many of our wounded warriors have mechanical limbs or eyes or other body parts. There are devices that hook up to human brains today.
Cyborg Romance often takes that one step further. What if we produced cyborg beings? What if we then assigned them tasks we didn’t want to do (like fighting wars we didn’t want to die in)?
This COULD happen. We COULD take that additional step.
If that happens, humans years from now might believe today’s Cyborg Romances predicted the future (i.e. their present).

Muse Food – The Innocent-Looking Ones
Many writers, myself included, tend to describe dangerous characters as looking…well…dangerous. (grins) They’re big or muscular or heft around huge guns or sport scars.
It is much more interesting, I think, to have the danger come from a harmless-looking being.
Like this red-winged blackbird.
Look at how small, how fragile, how ‘safe’ this red-winged blackbird appears. What is this tiny creature going to do – beat us with feathers?
Yet there are signs plastered all around the site warning people about them.
This little bird will dive bomb much large humans and try to peck their brains out.
And isn’t that an interesting type of character?

Provoking Odium And Deep Re-Writes
On Sunday, I mentioned I had deep re-writes on Provoking Odium last week. Now that there is some emotional distance between me and the re-writes, I thought I’d talk about why these re-writes happened.
I made a wrong story decision.
I forced the characters to go down a path they wouldn’t ever venture along on their own.
I knew in my gut I was doing this. I even had the right decision in my head.
But stars, I was so in love, so insistent on this path. It would be fresh and exciting, I told myself.
It might have been all that but it was also wrong for the characters, wrong for the story. My Awesome Editor could see that. I was too enamored of my alternate path to realize this on my own.
It is a much better story after the revisions. The ending is true to Odium and Briella.
It is now THEIR story, not mine.

Seizing Power

Dune And Foreseeing the Future
Warning – This post will contain some spoilers for Dune. If you haven’t yet watched the 2021 movie, you might wish to skip this post.
In the 2021 version of Dune, based on the book by Frank Herbert, Paul, the hero, sees the future in his dreams. He dreams of beings he’ll meet and events that could happen.
That’s great skill for a character to have but it makes creating an interesting story much more challenging.
Because, if Paul can see the future, he should be able to avoid nastiness like loss and death. He has the ability to live until he dies of natural causes.
We, as readers and viewers, will know he’ll always safe in battle or other dangerous situations. There will be no fear of him dying and no suspense.
The solution to this is Paul dreams about events that COULD happen. If he changes his responses, he changes the outcomes. He changes the future. It shifts from being known to being unknown. And in that unknown future, he COULD die in battle.
Seeing the future gives Paul an advantage but it doesn’t make him invincible.

Planning Series As A Pantser
I’m a pantser. I write by the seat of my pants, not having a plot before I sit down at my keyboard. I normally know the first scene of a story and perhaps a bit about that first point of view character (the hero or the heroine) and that’s it.
Which makes planning a series challenging. (laughs)
In the case of Cyborg Unity, it was a little easier because we ‘meet’ Odium’s heroine in Seizing Power. She’s the freighter captain who calls for help.
I didn’t know anything else about her at the time. And I had no idea who the next four stories were about.
I needed titles and covers for these stories, however. My cover artist requires a long lead time. I like to list all the stories in a series in the description for that first story.
So I jotted down the names of the cyborgs who hadn’t yet found their matches. And I allowed my heart to decide.
Grin, Raw, Strive, Intrepid called to me. Those heroes felt…right. I didn’t know why at the time.
But as I think about story 2 – Grin And Bare Him – I realize I couldn’t have written anyone else’s stories.
That, my friends, is storytelling magic and I’m constantly in awe of it. The muse always knows.

NaNoWriMo And Winning
November is NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, a month during which writers challenge themselves to write 50,000 fresh words (approximately 200 words) on a novel.
Some writing buddies have already ‘won’ NaNoWriMo. Woot! I’m so happy for you!
Some writing buddies won’t ‘win’ NaNoWriMo but HAVE written fresh words this month. Woot! I’m happy for you also.
Some writing buddies have a 0 word count month but they are surviving November. Woot! I’m happy for you!
I NEVER win NaNoWriMo. It takes me about 2 months to craft a submission draft of my 56,000 word stories. That does include all 3 preliminary drafts, submitting the story at the end of the second month to my Awesome Editor. But those 2nd and 3rd draft take only about 2 weeks.
And you know what? That’s okay. That’s my process. It works for me. I’ve written hundreds of stories this way. Writing at this speed makes me happy.
Writing isn’t a race or a competition. If you find joy in it, you’ve already won.

B is the last remaining B Model cyborg. All of his brethren, the beings he trained with, fought with, cared deeply for, have perished.
Or so he believes.
When he intercepts a communication mentioning the existence of one of his kind, he has to investigate its source. The message could be a trap set by his enemies. He’ll take that risk if it secures him the companionship he requires to be fully functional.

When her mission goes zombie-like beings levels of wrong, she comes face-to-face with a living, breathing B Model. He has big hands, a primitive countenance, and stern hard lips crafted for kissing.
She doesn’t trust him. And she doesn’t have time to indulge her desires.
Their shared enemies are chasing them, would kill to get their precious specimens back. One minor mistake could reduce B and Quinn to a mere line in the databases of history.

Godzilla vs. Kong And Communicating Without Dialogue
Spoiler Alert: This post might contain spoilers around the 2021 movie Godzilla vs. Kong. If you haven’t yet watched this movie, you might wish to skip the post.
I LOVE Godzilla. I also love Kong. I was super stoked to finally watch this movie.
Godzilla vs. Kong has its issues. You might wish to suspend all logic and knowledge of basic science while watching this movie. I went into the viewing merely expecting a good time and some awesome monster fight scenes and I was happy.
Godzilla vs. Kong is also set in the MonsterVerse (the same series as Skull Island) and it is helpful (yet not essential) to have watched the previous movies. Many of the characters (including Kong and Godzilla, of course) return.
One of the things I REALLY love about this movie is how the two main stars – Godzilla and Kong – communicate without speaking. They don’t rely on dialogue to express their thoughts and feelings. Kong works a little harder to communicate with the humans but when the two monsters are together, their expressions and body language are sufficient.
There is a scene at the end of the movie where the two monsters are facing each other. We scan to Godzilla, then to Kong, and back again and we know exactly what they’re thinking from their eyes (and their brows) and their stances. They move from “I’m going to beat you into the pavement” (fists clenched, bodies rigid and tilted forward, brows lowered) to “Would that effort be worth it?” (leaning slightly backward, raised brows, released fingers) to “I can’t be bothered to fight you at this time” (slumped shoulders, relaxed stance, brows at normal placement).
It is a scene I’ll study, dissect and learn from. I’ll use that knowledge in my future stories to reinforce the dialogue or perhaps to replace it completely.

Baring Grudge
No one in the universe is more determined than a cyborg warrior tracking his female.

Before she departs, she’ll experience one toe-curling moment of hatred-edged passion with her handsome foe. She’ll show him how skilled with detonations she truly is. He will have his universe rocked.
Then she’ll disappear.

Splitting A Series
I receive questions from quite a few writing buddies and a handful of reading buddies around why I’ve split the cyborg world into subseries.
It wasn’t really a sell more books strategy.
Sure, when I split a series, there are more entry points for new-to-me readers and more permafree first in series opportunities (as well as BookBub possibilities).
But that is offset by some booksellers having systems that greatly favor long series. Apple, for example, sends new release information to anyone who has ever purchased a book in the same series. Every time I start a new series, I start at zero. That’s not very effective.
I split the series because that’s how I think as a writer.
I can’t hold 20 future stories in my brain. (grins) I can barely hold 1. And I find a super long series daunting. I like 5 core stories. That’s manageable. If I apply myself, I can write that in a year and a half or less.
I also split the series because that’s how I like to read.
I like the way Lisa Kleypas, for example, splits her huge historical world into 5 (on average) book series. I can read 5 books and have the satisfaction of reading an entire series. That’s extremely fulfilling.
Then I can wait for a bit to start the next series. Or I can skip a series if the premise for that overall series doesn’t appeal to me (that hasn’t happened yet with Lisa Kleypas’ historicals). Or I can (gasp) stop. Yes, there will be things I’ll never uncover but there should be a satisfying stopping point.
You, as a writer or a read, might have different preferences. And hey, that’s okay! Do whatever brings you joy. Happiness is precious. Protect it.
