Grin And Bare Him And Lore

By Cynthia Sax on November 16, 2022

In Grin And Bare Him, the next story in the Cyborg Unity series (releasing next week), Grin, Strive and Raw travel to Mercury Minor, the home planet of the Rebel Cyborgs.

Eirene Ours (Cadet) is the leader of the Rebel Cyborgs. She’s not on Mercury Minor, however, when the three cyborgs arrive. She’s off planet with Power.

Lore is the cyborg temporarily in the leadership role. He is coordinating Raw’s rendezvous with his not-yet-seen female.

One of the reasons Lore is trusted by Eirene Ours is… he doesn’t share information that isn’t essential. He has been part of her team during their secret missions. He is accustomed to not transmitting, to hiding their existence from the universe.

That means the three cyborgs don’t know really what to expect on Mercury Minor. (grins) ANYTHING could (and does) happen.

Grin And Bare Him – Fourth Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on November 14, 2022

Grin And Bare Him, the second story in the Cyborg Unity series, releases next week! Woot!

Today, I’m sharing the fourth and final scene from the very first chapter.

You can read the first scene here:

During the voyage to Mercury Minor, Grin and Strive helped Raw formulate a plan they projected would completely conquer his female emotionally.

They armed him with human-friendly compliments and courting strategies they had located in various databases. Strive crafted two additional decorative panels utilizing the same floral theme. Grin drafted the blueprints for a unique domicile suited for human females.

Their plan was perfect.

Except for one detail.

Raw hadn’t been given an opportunity to implement it.

They were six planet rotations and one shift away from the planet, and their friend’s genetic match hadn’t yet accepted any of his communications.

“She could be damaged.” The warrior expressed that fear. “That would explain why she’s offline.”

“Ask our contact on Mercury Minor if she’s fully functional.” Grin monitored the state of the test panels. All were intact.

“If I ask Lore that question, he’ll process I’m not communicating with my female.” Raw slowed the warship’s speed. “There’s an 85.2588 percent probability he’ll speak with the leadership team on Mercury Minor and with the cyborg council on the Homeland, and a 47.2365 percent probability they’ll then withdraw our authorization to land on the planet.” Landing privileges on the planet were severely rationed. “I’ll lose the opportunity to claim my female.”

“That projection is sound.” Strive surprised Grin by agreeing with their friend.

The two males had heatedly debated every decision they’d made during the voyage.

Grin suspected they enjoyed the arguments.

“And there’s no need to ask the question. Your female is fully functional. She also remains on Mercury Minor,” Strive told Raw. “Lore processes who you are traveling to meet. He would’ve contacted you if she was damaged or missing.”

“Lore would process the state of your female.” Grin nodded. “He—”

A light on the bridge’s console flashed.

“He’s contacting us now.” Raw opened communications. “This is Raw. We will arrive in six planet rotations and one shift.”

“That landing has been authorized.” Lore’s face appeared on the main viewscreen. “I’m sending you the coordinates.”

The location of the landing site appeared below his image.

“Warriors will greet you as you disembark from your vessel.” The cyborg’s words were clipped. “I’ll be amongst them. We’ll escort you to your female’s chamber.”

“My female won’t be waiting at the coordinates?” Raw lifted his eyebrows.

There was a telling pause.

Grin exchanged a glance with Strive.

That didn’t project good things.

“Your female won’t be waiting at the landing site,” Lore finally responded. “She’ll be occupying her chamber.”

No new information was relayed.

There was another stretch of silence.

Ask him why she won’t be greeting you upon our landing. Strive urged Raw through their shared transmission line.

I’m not jeopardizing the claiming of my female. Raw was being unusually cautious.

Grin agreed with the male’s stance. He projected Lore processed they wanted more intel and was deliberately withholding it.

“During your stay on Mercury Minor, you’ll be approached by one or more beings requesting transport off the planet.” Lore changed the subject. “Refuse those requests. And guard your ship.”

Grin frowned. “You’re not allowing beings to leave the planet?”

The male’s face hardened. “The being most aggressively seeking to leave Mercury Minor plans to travel to a Humanoid Alliance-controlled planet. She’s a fragile, fully organic humanoid, and there’s an 84.2563 percent probability she’ll be killed on her self-appointed mission. We prefer to safeguard her until she is claimed by her warrior. That warrior can then modify her processing.”

“That’s logical.” Grin had been thoroughly chastised.

“All our decisions are logical.” Lore’s tone was snippy. “We await your arrival.”

The male ended the communication.

“That unidentified warrior will have a challenging task once he meets his female.” Grin shook his head. “She sounds determined to end her lifespan.”

“I envy that warrior,” Strive shared softly.

“I envy him also.” Grin swallowed a sigh. He wouldn’t be the humanoid female’s male. She required a warrior, and he refused to hold that role. “I’ll take the first shift guarding the warship.”

He would utilize that time to examine the test panels.

“You can have the first shift and the second one also.” Raw increased the warship’s speed. “While you’re guarding the warship, I’ll meet with my female. We’ll talk. Finally. I’ll wield all the right words, sharing with her the statements the two of you have crafted for me. She’ll have no defenses against my advances. My female will agree to breed with me, and I’ll be the most fortunate warrior in the universe.”

He sounded as though he was trying to convince himself that progression of events would occur.

“I’ll be exploring the planet.” Strive stretched out his body armor-clad legs. “Warriors have been chattering about the wide-open spaces on Mercury Minor. There are trees higher than domiciles, and large fields of yellow grasses, and no beings within visual range.”

Grin had heard that chatter also. Mercury Minor was covered with restored soil. It was lush and fertile and had few inhabitants.

The Homeland, in contrast, was crowded with beings, both on the planet’s surface and in the ships orbiting high above it. There were no wide-open spaces, very little vegetation, and there were many, many structures.

Some of them had been designed by him.

He might find inspiration for more structure fabrications on Mercury Minor. Being in a different environment should encourage different ideas, and his surroundings would be quiet and peaceful. There would be plenty of space to test materials.

Grin’s lips curled upward.

His duration on the planet would be conducive to working.

Other cyborgs might not relish that prospect.

He embraced it with his entire being.

Grin And Bare Him – Third Scene Of The First Chapter

“There’s a 5.1236 percent probability Grin’s test will kill us all during the voyage.” Strive relayed that intel to Raw.

“There’s an 11.2589 percent probability my female will reject me.” Raw’s confident façade slipped for a heartbeat, revealing an uncertainty that unsettled Grin.

The male met the specs for their kind. That he doubted his worthiness doomed the rest of them.

“She’s your genetic match.” Grin reminded his friend. “And you’re a great warrior.”

“I am a great warrior.” The male squared his shoulders. “She might be busy with other tasks. That might be why she isn’t accepting my communications.”

That wasn’t a good sign for their relationship.

Grin exchanged another glance with Strive.

His friend inclined his head toward the beautiful panel he’d decorated.

Grin nodded, silently agreeing with that proposal.

“Give her this.” Strive handed the sheet of metal to Raw. “According to my research, many females like gifts, and they also like flowers. She’ll hang it in her private chambers and be reminded of you.”

Raw brought it close to his face and sniffed. “It smells like battle.” His lips curled upward. “I like it.”

“You like it because it smells like a gun?” Strive waved his hands at the panel. “Look at it. Note how realistic the flowers are, how the curve of the stems mirrors the curves of the blossom, the use of negative space and symmetry and—”

“It’s beautiful work.” Grin sought to repair the blow to his friend’s ego. “The design is one of the best you’ve ever fabricated. I’ve saved the image in my databases and will replicate it in a deserving domicile.”

“It is very…flowery.” Raw’s attempt to placate Strive was weak.

The male wasn’t appreciative of decoration. Very few cyborgs valued design outside of functionality.

“It is very flowery?” The artistic cyborg exhaled noisily. “My work is wasted on you.”

“Your work might not be wasted on my female.” Raw was oblivious to Strive’s emotional damage. The warrior smiled down at the panel. “It is pretty.”

“Pretty?” Strive appeared on the verge of shutting down.

“Find the calm,” Grin murmured.

The glance his friend threw him was the exact opposite of calm.

“We leave at sunrise.” Raw tucked the panel under his right arm. “The warship is situated on landing pad 25632 North. It’s being stocked with supplies and weapons.”

Grin couldn’t process why they needed additional guns. They weren’t at war with Mercury Minor, and they were traveling through cyborg-monitored space.

There were other preparations to be made.

“I’m attaching two panels fabricated from each test material to the exterior of the ship.” He had those sheets manufactured three planet rotations ago. “Their shielding will be in addition to the protection granted by the existing panels.” His gaze shifted to Strive. “That will decrease the probability of their failure killing us all to 0.1257 percent.”

His friend could be overly dramatic.

“The additional drag and weight will decrease our top speed.” The male could also be frustratingly logical. He was a cyborg, was one-half mechanical, one-half organic.

“We’ll utilize that time to formulate a plan to win over my female.” Raw didn’t appear concerned about the delay. “Bring materials. You might have to craft more pretty decorations for her.”

“My art isn’t pretty, you unappreciative bag of bolts.” Strive’s eyes blazed.

“You won’t need those additional decorations.” Grin was 99.5687 percent certain of that. “You operate within spec, my friend.” Unlike him. And unlike Strive. “Once she sees you, once she senses your nanocybotics, she’ll welcome your claim.”

“She’s heard my voice.” Raw didn’t share that confidence.

Cyborgs recognized their genetic matches by their voice and by their scent.

“She’s human.” That might be the explanation. Grin walked toward the structure where he’d stored the extra panels. “She might need more points of connection, but she will bond with you. You’re fully functional.”

“His art-evaluation systems aren’t fully functional,” Strive muttered.

The two males followed Grin.

“I am fully functional.” Raw ignored Strive’s comments. “And she will bond with me.” His tread lightened.

Grin was happy for his friend. Truly.

But he was also extremely envious.

Grin And Bare Him And Loving Beings With Faults

By Cynthia Sax on November 2, 2022

Grin, the cyborg hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing this month!), has two best buddies – Strive and Raw. Neither of these males are perfect. They both have faults.

Grin sees these faults. And they see his faults. The three cyborgs are so comfortable in their caring and their mutual respect they can tease each other about their foibles. (smiles)

And, that, I believe, signals the trust they have in each other. The Humanoid Alliance, their cruel manufacturers, would have decommissioned them, killed them for their faults. But the three males are so secure in their caring for each other they don’t try to hide their weaknesses when they are together.

I think that’s wonderful.

Grin And Bare Him – Second Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on October 31, 2022

I’m sharing scenes from the first chapter of Grin And Bare Him as we wait for its release on November 22nd.

You can read the first scene from the first chapter of Grin And Bare Him here:

http://tasteofcyn.com/?p=10131

This week I’m sharing the second scene of that first chapter.

***

“We’ll determine whose projectile placement is better while we test your panels.” Strive’s eyes glittered. “What are the parameters?”

“We’ll test three panels each.” Grin selected the most viable candidates. “Fifty projectiles in each sheet. Random formation. No repeats. From a distance of four strides away.”

“Even a human could hit a panel from four strides away.” His friend moved that distance from a panel. “Increase the difficulty level, cyborg. Delete that random formation spec and insert a—” He tilted his head. “—floral-formation requirement in its stead.”

“You’ll win that challenge.” Grin hadn’t Strive’s artistry with projectile placements. “But I’ll win also. The panels will be tested.”

“And they’ll be beautiful.” His friend’s head dipped. “Let’s do this.”

Grin searched his processors for an image of a flower that would fill the entire space and test every part of the panel. He then shot in rapid succession, outlining the petals, stem, and leaves.

The projectiles pierced the metal.

Fraggin’ hole. His lips flattened. That material wasn’t usable.

He moved to the next panel, utilized the same image. The projectiles pinged off the surface of the sheet.

That panel would progress to the second stage of testing.

The third sheet, decorated with the identical floral design, also passed the projectile test.

Strive continued to shoot.

Grin inspected the two panels remaining under consideration. The projectiles had dented one of them deeper than the other.

He waited for his friend to complete his testing.

And waited. And waited.

The shooting didn’t stop.

Grin walked to Strive’s side and looked at his target.

The K Model remained on the first panel.

Strive had utilized hundreds of projectiles. Each one had punctured the metal.

The material wasn’t usable, but the result was a work of art. The flowers, leaves, and stems swirled in an elaborate design.

“You won the challenge.” Grin’s design was crude in comparison.

“I discarded the parameters of the test.” Strive’s tone was edged with guilt.

“Maintaining the parameters of the test wouldn’t have changed its results.” Grin shrugged. “I won’t be utilizing that metal on the exterior of a structure.”

He moved to Strive’s second panel, unloaded fifty projectiles into it, shifted to the final panel, did the same.

One of the panels passed the durability test.

“Three materials have made it to the next round of evaluation.” Grin was satisfied with that number.

“Are we blowing the panels up now?” Strive tilted his head and gazed at his design for a heartbeat. He then pressed one of his triggers again.

“Testing them against space debris would be more effective.” Grin grasped one of the winning panels, held it upward, at eye level. “We could attach them to a ship, fly that vessel between the Homeland and one of the unoccupied planets in the sector, evaluate the panels’ conditions when we land.”

“And if they fail that test?” Strive lifted his panel also. Light shone through the puncture marks. “The ship would implode and everyone on board will die.”

“That’s unlikely to happen.” Grin frowned. “There’s a mere 5.1236 percent probability of catastrophic failure.”

“That’s not zero.” His friend’s eyes sparkled. “Only a reckless warrior would volunteer to pilot that ship.”

A being appeared on their internal monitoring systems.

They exchanged a humor-laden glance.

That reckless warrior had presented himself.

“I projected you’d be here.” Raw swaggered into view. “The cyborg council has granted the three of us authorization to trek to Mercury Minor.”

“You’re claiming your female.” Grin was happy for the male.

Raw was one of the thousands of cyborgs who’d been matched with beings rescued by the Rebel faction. Their friend had heard a female’s voice and had processed she was designed for him.

The K model was worthy of that honor. He was a skilled warrior and a good being.

“I’m claiming my female.” Raw’s chin lifted.

Grin swallowed his envy. “You’re a lucky bag of bolts, my friend.” He slapped the male’s right arm.

“You deserve happiness.” Strive punched Raw’s left shoulder. “Frag. We all do.”

His gaze met Grin’s.

They both processed they were unlikely to have genetic matches.

“There are different types of happiness.” Grin summoned a smile. “I’m happy to have an opportunity to further test the panels.”

Grin And Bare Him, The Humanoid Alliance And Rebuilding

By Cynthia Sax on October 26, 2022

I think it is important to talk about how the Humanoid Alliance forces, the big baddies in the cyborg world, haven’t been defeated. Not at all.

They lost the core portion of their forces when the cyborgs mass rebelled. They no longer had ‘machines’ (as they viewed cyborgs) to fight their wars, to expand their empire.

It would be like the US military temporarily running out of soldiers. The officers, the commanders would still remain but there wouldn’t be enough people to fight wars.

The Humanoid Alliance lost the wars they hadn’t yet won. If there were enough locals left to retake planets, those planets are being reclaimed by the original inhabitants.

But the Humanoid Alliance is holding the planets they have completely conquered. They have human forces (but not nearly enough of these ‘fragile’ beings for expansion). They’re building armies of the undead and armies of robots. And they are searching the universe for more ‘weapons.’

The Humanoid Alliance remains and they are a threat to the happiness of all cyborgs everywhere.

Grin And Bare Him – First Scene Of The First Chapter

By Cynthia Sax on October 24, 2022

I love it when I start posting excerpts. (grins) It means release day is fast approaching!

While we wait for the release of Grin And Bare Him, the second core story in the Cyborg Unity series, here is the first scene from the first chapter.

***

Chapter One

Cyborgs were designed for breeding and for war.

Grin could easily defeat a human in battle. He had the fighting skills to accomplish that feat. But he didn’t enjoy killing. It made him…grumpy.

As a result, he didn’t train sufficiently to master the ending of lifespans. He couldn’t vanquish his brethren in mock combat. Their abilities and their love for the skirmishes far surpassed his.

He was admittedly no warrior, and he had no desire to ever become one.

Breeding wasn’t an option for him either. He hadn’t yet met his genetic match, the one being in the universe he was destined to bond with.

That special individual might not exist. Not for him, a cyborg operating out of spec.

He might never enjoy that connection with another being.

Processing that possibility, he focused on a skill he excelled in – designing structures.

He absorbed knowledge from every database he could access; experimented with techniques, styles, and materials; was constantly looking for ways to improve the construction of buildings.

His expertise was greatly needed. The cyborgs had escaped the Humanoid Alliance, their cruel manufacturers, and had claimed several planets as their own.

Domiciles and other spaces had to be erected in vast quantities. And he preferred for those structures to last.

Cyborgs had unlimited natural lifespans. Their buildings should have the same longevities.

They should be fabricated from durable materials.

Grin studied the six panels set before him. The metals had been sourced from planets situated all over the universe.

He was alone in his contemplation but not physically solitary.

Strive, his friend and fellow K-model cyborg, stood beside him. The male stared down at the shadows cast across the floor tiles. “Focus on the shapes.” His voice was soft as he chattered to himself. “Find the calm.”

Around them, warriors perfected their battle skills. Mock gunfire echoed. Bodies thumped against walls. Cyborgs exchanged gibes.

“Find the calm.” His friend’s voice gained an increasingly hard edge. “Find the calm. Find… Fraggin’ hole. Would all of you be blasted quiet?” Strive yelled at their brethren. “Some of us are trying to fabricate art.”

Grin smothered his mirth. The K model was seeking to manage his overly active emotional system by expelling energy creatively.

“Relocate to a different chamber if you want quiet.” North, a visiting D Model, relayed that unwelcomed advice as he passed by them.

The training chamber was the ideal site for Grin to test materials. The space was designed for rough usage.

“Frag all the way off, D Model.” Strive cursed at him.

Truth, another visiting cyborg, laughed.

“Find the fraggin’ calm.” Strive returned to studying the shadows on the floor. “Find it.”

Grin shifted his full attention back to his tasks also. He crouched by one of the panels to examine it closer.

It appeared strong, but he’d seen the strongest of beings crumple under strain.

Moments passed.

“Frag finding calm.” Strive gave up on serenity. “It’s completely lost for me this planet rotation.” He looked at Grin. “Do you have something you want me to blow up? How about one of your panels?”

That was a fast and efficient way to test materials, and it would soothe his friend.

Grin glanced around them. The space remained crowded with warriors.

“If we set off an explosive now, the medic team would fry our processors.” He straightened. “The last time we did that, every cyborg in the chamber had to have their limbs reattached. The medics were fully occupied for three shifts.”

“I lost both of my arms and one of my legs in that detonation.” Strive’s good humor resurfaced. “That was fun.”

“It was…illuminating.” None of those panels had shielded warriors. The exterior of a structure should do that, should keep its inhabitants safe. He had discarded those materials. “We’ll utilize guns for this first test.”

Grin drew two weapons.

Strive did the same. “Can you hit the panel?” His friend lifted his eyebrows. “Its aim is suboptimal.” He mimicked the disapproving tones of their former Humanoid Alliance trainer.

“At least I aim at targets.” Grin returned the teasing. “You press your triggers before you process where the targets are.”

“Aiming is for offspring.” Strive rolled his eyes.

“Aiming is also for mature beings.” Grin laughed.

They were both battle-impaired.

If they hadn’t escaped their manufacturers during their training programs, they would’ve been decommissioned. They would’ve been killed in the most painful way possible, stripped for parts while still alive.

And they would never have reached the Homeland. They would never have processed freedom.

Grin braced his booted feet apart. He was never leaving the cyborg-controlled sector, would never risk that fate again.

There was no reason to do that. He had several human lifespans’ worth of structures to construct on the planets situated within that space.

Grin And Bare Him

This cyborg will be the warrior his female requires.

Cyborgs are designed to fight. That is their primary purpose and 98.2356 percent of the manufactured warriors enjoy battle. Tremendously.

Grin, a K model, is one of the rare exceptions. When he escaped his cruel creators, he set down his sword and allocated his processors to less violent pursuits. He projects he’s left his war-waging planet rotations behind him forever.

Then he meets his beautiful, beguiling female, the one being he’s destined to protect, to claim, to love for all eternity, and his plans for peace are completely decimated.

Mohini needs a ship.

She has a dangerous mission to complete and the first step in that assignment is arranging transport to an enemy-controlled planet. The vessel she has set her sights on is guarded by the sexiest cyborg she’s ever seen.

To gain access to his ship, Mohini is prepared to kiss, caress, seduce the muscular male. The mission is her focus. The pleasure she experiences will merely be a bonus.

A female has to do what a female has to do to save the universe.

Grin And Bare Him is a Cyborg SciFi Romance set in a dark, gritty, sometimes-violent universe.
It features a humanoid female undertaking a dangerous mission, a cyborg intent on keeping her alive, and an enemy with enough firepower to blow up an entire sector.

Grin And Bare Him And Never Seeing Active Battle

By Cynthia Sax on October 21, 2022

We first meet Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing in November) in Breathing Vapor, the second story in the cyborg world.

He escapes with Vapor and other cyborgs from their manufacturing facility. The Humanoid Alliance had not yet assigned them to active duty. They had never been placed on the battlefield.

These cyborgs were still forced to do and see horrific things. They killed beings in their training battles. They witnessed their brethren being decommissioned. They fought their way out of the manufacturing facility when they escaped from the Humanoid Alliance.

Grin and his brethren endured dark, harsh lifespans. I’m extremely happy they will finally experience love and joy.

Grin And Bare Him And When Minor Characters Aren’t So Minor

By Cynthia Sax on October 19, 2022

One of the many things I LOVE about being a gazillion stories into the cyborg world is…

Many of the minor characters, the beings who show up briefly in stories, are main characters (heroes/heroines) of previous stories. I know them. And even better, YOU know them.

In Grin And Bare Him, for example, Truth laughs as he walks by Grin and Strive. That’s the full extent of his interaction – a laugh.

A new-to-the-world reader might only know a random male finds the situation amusing.

YOU know who Truth is and why he finds the situation especially amusing. (He thrives on chaos. – grins)

I LOVE this.

Grin And Bare Him And Alpha Or Beta Heroes

By Cynthia Sax on October 14, 2022

I am super interested in hearing what you think of Grin, the hero of Grin And Bare Him (releasing in November).

I suspect some reading buddies will view him as a Beta Hero. Grin doesn’t view himself as a warrior. He is totally open to following his female’s orders. He processes situations from different perspectives before he reacts to them.

Some other reading buddies will view Grin as an Alpha Hero. He has to strength to do his own thing (designing structures for his kind) and he walks away from the role everyone expects him to hold (that of being a battle-loving warrior). He says ‘no’ quite often to situations that don’t appeal to him. When it comes to his female’s safety, he doesn’t relent.

Grin is a complex hero. (smiles) I love him to bits.
